“But there has to be something I can do to save him.” I cried to everyone in Mia Lu’s hut.
It’s been a few minutes since I found out that Lucas knew he was going to die and I have been quiet until now. I whispered, facepalming, “I can’t let him die.”
Otis who had just been listening since I entered the hall said to me, “Just like Lori said, we all have limits. As an elemental white white, I can manipulate nature but I can’t manipulate what isn’t there. If there is no sea, I can’t use water. If I’m in a desert, I can’t use trees.”
“As a memory reader, I have my limits too. If I go too far, I’ll get lost in a person’s mind and my soul would never be found.” Susanna added,
Within a minute, Lori chirped in, “Menders have limits as you know. We get tired after taking a person’s pain or wound and most importantly, once the soul leaves the body, we can’t return it. We can’t bring back the dead because that would mean giving our soul to the person. After all, we mend by giving a part of us out and the goddess rewards us by renewing us every day.”
“You know I will fall asleep soon. That’s a limit to my power as a spiritual guardian.” Mia Lu also added.
They were all trying to educate me and as much as I appreciated that, it wasn’t what I needed. I needed help not words of discouragement.
Ross, the youngest of the Elders shrugged, “I’m still young but I know that trackers have limits too-”
“I don’t need this lecture. I need your help because I sure as hell won’t stand still while the father of my kids dies in my hands.” I cut Ross off. “It’d kill me to see him die, Mia Lu. You’ve to help me. I’m begging you.”
I pleaded despite the odds.
However, Mia Lu replied, “We wish we could help your family, Fiona but never has it been recorded that anyone changed the future not even our Alpha bloodline. We either accept our limits or die trying to push our luck.”
Otis muttered, “We’re so sorry, Fiona. Alpha Lucas has become one of us and this is painful for us all.”
Like they were in sync, Lori picked it up from where Otis’s dropped it, “Of course, it would be more painful for you as you are his mate-”
“Ex-mate.” I corrected her statement out of habit.
But Lori smiled as she continued, “Do you know what happened when you broke the bond through rejection?”
What does that have to do with anything? I asked myself.
Lori answered my internal question, “The bond does break, into pieces and what happens to those pieces?” She looked at me, pausing for a bit, “The pieces live on within you and your partner.
“Which is why you both will remain connected until you mate with someone else or get marked by another person.” Mia Lu concluded, making me realize that they were telling me about the situation Lucas and I didn’t know.
“Does that mean we are still connected and his d-de-death will hurt even more than I was expecting?” I asked, closing my eyes because I already knew the answer to my question.
“I’m so sorry about this, Fiona,” Susanna said to me as I broke into fresh tears.
This was harsh.
What would happen to Katie when this vision becomes a reality?
Or Kyle when he learns that the dad he just started loving is no more?
What would happen to the version of me that would fall in love with him soon?
“I’ll return to my room. Sorry for barging in-” I sniffled.
But Susanna interrupted, “Let me see you to your door.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Yes, but I want to.” Susanna insisted.
I said goodnight to the Elders and followed Susanna out of the hut.
“I should have told you but I couldn’t. Please don’t be mad-”
Exhaling, I murmured, “It’s okay. I can’t be mad at you. Just promise me you won’t tell him that I know about the future.” “You don’t want him to know?” Susanna asked, her confusion clear in her eyes.
“I don’t want him to spend the rest of his life trying to assure me that he would be fine. I don’t want him to worry about me. We both need peace.” I said to Susanna, fighting back tears.
How could I be powerful but still completely useless?
What’s the point of all these spiritual powers if I couldn’t save anyone?
Susanna’s voice distracted me when she agreed with me, “Yes, you both need peace. I will inform the Elders about your wishes. I just hope you and Lucas will be able to enjoy the time you have left instead of fighting and being at each other’s throats.”
“I hope so too,” I said to Susanna just as we arrived in front of my hut. “Thank you for coming with me.”
Susanna hugged me, assuring me that all would be fine before she walked back to Mia Lu’s hut. I sighed, entering my hut to use the rest of the night to think about how Lucas could be saved. I thought being alone would help me figure that out despite the Elders’ warnings about pushing one’s luck.
However, my desire to be alone flew out the hut’s window when I returned to my room and found Lucas there, pacing and worried sick about me.
“Thank goddess. I thought I had to come looking for you.” He blurted as soon as he saw me.
With disbelief, I etched, “You are still here?”
Lucas sighed, “Do you want me to leave? I was waiting for you to return so I can confirm that you are fine before I go to bed
”
“Don’t go, Lucas,” I muttered and watched as the knitted lines on his forehead loosened. “I want you to stay with me.” Lucas froze for a minute before he asked, raising his voice as he threw his hands around, “What’s going on with you, Fiona? One minute, you want a kiss then you started crying and you ran off without telling me anything yet you are asking me to stay after you made it look like-”
I closed the distance between us with four long strides and did the same with the distance between our lips.
