Aside from the feeling of embarrassment, I felt alive. I felt pure joy despite the odds against us. I knew what the future held but I wasn’t ready to accept what Mia Lu called fate.
Lucas will live.
I don’t know how but I’ll make sure my kids keep waking us up with kisses for many years to come. Katie was glowing and Kyle seemed to be less responsible which meant he was enjoying himself too.
“About time,” Iris snickered when she saw Lucas and I approaching with the kids.
I could pass for a very red tomato at this point. I was certain everyone in the pack already knew that Lucas and I spent the night together in the same hut and on the same bed. The elders might understand the need for the sudden change but Iris was just having fun.
To be honest, I never want her to know about my vision.
I’ll save Lucas.
“We’ll save him,” Inara confirmed, believing in us even though we were both clueless.
“It’s good to have you both join us.” Mia Lu began. The adults in the pack were all sitting on the field while the Elders sat in front. “We have all come together to decide the future of the pack.”
Jeremy took over, “The pack members have been briefed and we are just here to vote publicly.”
“Let’s get to that without wasting time,” Otis added.
Ross chimed, “Show of hands if you are against moving to Alpha Lucas’s pack for the protection of our lives.”
I expected that the trauma of the past might force some people to be against moving especially to a pack that isn’t white shade but what I didn’t expect was not seeing a single hand up.
Unbelievable.
No one was against moving to Lucas’s pack?
Not even Jeremy.
Susanna got over the shock faster than the rest of us and she called out, “Show of hands if you are in support of moving to Crescent Pack so we can have a safe place to stay before Mia Lu’s spiritual sleep.”
Everybody raised one of their hands in response to Susanna. Even the kids raised their hands. They were all excited to move but the adults understood that moving would be risky and a lot could go wrong.
“It’s decided then. Let’s start packing our valuables.” Mia Lu nodded acknowledging the result of the public vote.
“We should be able to leave this location by the end of the week. Make sure you leave nothing behind.” Otis announced and he instructed the white wolves, telling them that they couldn’t leave any traces behind.
Lori explained better when she said, “We have to remain hidden from the world even though people of Crescent Pack will know of our existence. To the rest of the realm, we don’t exist. Do you understand?”
The white wolves responded, full of life, and after a few minutes of more talking by the elders, everyone returned to their hut and they began to pack immediately.
I looked at Lucas and mumbled, “Are you ready to take responsibility for all these people?”
“Yes, as long as you are by my side,” Lucas answered confidently.
“I’ll be by your side,” I assured him.
He smiled, “Great. Andrew has uprooted the bad weeds in the pack so the white wolves would be safe. I know they are family to you and my mom and that makes them my family.”
Susanna interrupted that moment with Lucas when she stood beside me and uttered, “The men need your help, Alpha Lucas.”
Lucas left but before he did, he kissed me chastely on the cheek, making me flush before Susanna who started mocking me the second Lucas was out of earshot, “Looks like someone is determined to get a bit of that delicious man.”
Oh, was she wrong.
I planned to get all of Lucas.
The chit-chat with Susanna would have ended when I pulled her legs about the secret relationship she was having with Otis. I called it a secret because she hadn’t told me about it but it didn’t end.
In fact, Susanna ruined the moment when she said, “Enjoy the time you have left and make sure you have no regret-”
I frowned as my heart clenched and I countered, “There would be no regret because I’ll save him, Suzy.”
“But there’s nothing you can do to change fate. I thought you understood that from last night’s-”
I countered again, “Watch me change this fate, Suzy.”
“Even if you succeed, you could die instead, Fiona. Is that what you want? For goddess’s sake, you both could die if you are hell-bent on defying fate. What will happen to the kids-”
I snapped at this point, “Can you please give me a break? No one is dying and that’s final.
Susanna was dumbfounded as I walked away from her, unable to keep my emotions from surfacing. I returned to my hut, had a good cry, and had enough time to think about the ways I could stop Lucas’s death.
After hours of failing to come up with a spiritual solution, I settled for the logical one- Keep Lucas away from the war where he would die or better still, stop the war from happening.
