Fiona
I would have argued confidently if anyone had told me I would be relieved to step into Crescent Pack after I vouch never to return and this is not just because the pack is better.
It’s the atmosphere… it’s so much better and something about the change made me feel at ease.
We have been here for two days and the white wolves are settling into their apartment building. For some of the younger ones who were born and raised in the hidden pack, having to live in a proper building with proper toilets and other necessary amenities seemed surreal but they have been adapting.
The twins and I have spent most of our time in the white wolves building, helping them settle. Iris was also devoted to that mission and a few of the members of Crescent Pack have visited the building to welcome the white wolves to their pack.
“It’s been going well if you ask me.” Inara chimed into my head as I listened to Mia Lu and Lori talk about how they needed to turn the nearest lake into the new purifying lake.
I agreed with my wolf just as Otis muttered, “We’ll need to build a shelter around the lake.”
“That’s easy. I can ask Lucas to provide some building materials-“I started saying.
However, Jeremy cut in, “We don’t need to ask him, Fiona. We can build a shelter by ourselves.”
I rolled my eyes but didn’t comment on how Jeremy has been difficult these past two days. He has been headstrong and annoying even to the other elders but no one tried to reprimand him.
“Let’s get it done before I have to sleep. The lake is important to our livelihood.” Mia Lu said to Jeremy who nodded and walked away, leaving the rest of us in the general living room in the building.
Iris who has also been sitting with us announced with a wide smile, “Alpha Lucas and I were discussing this morning and he agreed that we need to welcome you all to the pack formerly. Nothing grand but a small dinner party. It will help the white wolves mix with members of the pack and create a relationship before we start training properly.”
My heart tightened as those words rolled off Iris’s tongue.
The party was a good idea but the fact that I had nothing to do with that was why I felt uneasy. Ever since we arrived, Iris and Lucas have been making decisions concerning the relationship of the two kinds of wolves within the pack and the elders of the white wolves have been making decisions about the welfare of the white wolves.
I had nothing to do but offer help here and there.
Even Lucas hasn’t been around much.
Although I saw him leaving his mansion this morning from the window of my room in the apartment behind his mansion where the kids and I have moved into. Susanna and Otis planned to move in with us but they still had to remain with the white wolves for obvious reasons.
I know it’s just been two days but I was beginning to feel useless and alone again.
“You are overthinking this and overreacting, Relia. You know these people love you and Lucas has been away but I know he will come to you soon.” Inara assured me.
I took the thought off my mind just as Iris informed everyone that the dinner party would be happening tomorrow evening. Mia Lu told Iris that the white wolves would be there before she retired to her room, still very tired from the journey.
I and the twins ate dinner with the white wolves before we walked back to our apartment which was on the other side of the pack.
“Can’t we move into one of the empty rooms in the white wolves’ house, Mama? It’s so much fun there, unlike our apartment where we have to be alone.” Kyle complained on our way home and Katie quickly agreed with him.
“It’s no fun there, especially without Auntie Jessica and Hazel. I miss them.” My daughter murmured, her words stabbing me in my heart.
Jessica. I quickly sent a prayer to the goddess to guide her soul in the afterlife and of course, I cursed the day I decided to be friends with Hazel but the kids didn’t have to know that.
“I’ll think about that, darlings,” I said to my kids as we walked past Lucas’s Mansion.
It doesn’t look like anyone was home, not even Iris. I yawned and looked forward to hitting the bed and cuddling with my babies.
However when I opened the entrance door, we found Lucas sitting in the living room, and when he saw us, a big smile stretched his face.
“Hey…” He exclaimed happily as the kids ran into his open arms.
I stayed back and just stared at them as my heart leaped for joy.
Lucas looked at me, uttering, “You don’t want to join us? Do I smell or do you no longer like group hugs?”
“Come on, mom.” Katie waved me over one of her hands around Lucas’s neck while the other stretched to pull me into the hug. I joined them, feeling contented.
After a few minutes of small talk, the kids left Lucas and me in the living room so they could get ready for bed. Riaden’s facial expression immediately switched from playful to serious. Or was I reading him wrongly-
“I thought you would move into the mansion, Fiona. You are all alone here and I want-” Lucas began.
“With the way you have been unreachable since we arrived, I’d have been alone in your home too, Lucas.” I stopped him before he could complete his statement. I didn’t want to fight with him but I couldn’t help but be mad at him as I added, “I also don’t want to move into your mansion.”
I thought he would ask me why but instead, Lucas held my hand, moving closer to me and he said, “Then I’ll move into this apartment.”
