Fiona
When I woke up a few hours later, a part of me felt at peace but a bigger part of me beat me for falling asleep right after I picked up the mysterious journal I found within the white shade’s box.
I found myself in bed with Lucas who was fast asleep until I tried to slip out of his hold.
His hoarse voice resonated through the room as his hand tightened over my stomach, pinning me to the bed, “It’s still a few hours before morning, Fiona.”
“I need to open the journal. I didn’t do that before I dozed off.” I whispered to Lucas, believing that was enough reason for him to let me go.
However, Lucas chimed, “That can wait till morning. What you need is sleep.”
“Lucas-”
“I know you wouldn’t have fallen asleep if you weren’t scared of what you would find in the book. You fell asleep. Use the opportunity to recharge before going back to the past.” Lucas said to me, snuggling against me.
No doubt, I was scared and Lucas was right. I fell asleep while worrying about the story the journal carries. However, I needed to read that book. I shouldn’t be scared to find answers. After all, it’s all I have sought all my life.
Despite having those thoughts, I let Lucas talk me back to sleep. He said reading the journal might change the course of my life and resting now might help me manage the shock better.
So I rested.
At least until my kids jumped into bed hours later, the twins woke us up and during that moment, I didn’t think about the boxes. I felt content with just being in bed with my family.
Our precious moment ended when Kyle was playfully thrown off the bed by Lucas for the hundredth time but this time, he didn’t jump back into the bed. Instead, my son froze as something on the floor caught his attention.
Kyle muttered, “Hey, mama. It’s you and the strange man again.” I was confused until he bent down and picked up the familiar photograph from the floor. “He kinda looks like you but you are also in the picture_”
“What do you mean by again, baby?” I asked my son, leaving the comfort of the need to join him by the side of the bed.
Could he have seen the picture somewhere before now?
That’s impossible… but knowing Kyle, it could be possible.
“I once saw a picture of the both of you, Mama,” Kyle announced with conviction.
And when it comes to my son’s memory, I know it’s reliable.
With that in mind, I shared Kyle’s conviction and asked with a shaky voice, “Wh-where? Where did yo-you see the photograph?”
Kyle held my gaze, clearly wondering why I was questioning him with mixed feelings but he answered regardless, “I saw a bigger one when I was studying in the hut library.”
“The white wolves’ library?” I stuttered but Kyle nodded confidently.
I looked at Lucas and he instantly knew what I was thinking.
The scribe knew who my parents were. The elders could know. Everyone could have known but no one told me. Why?
“Do you remember how they all looked at you during our first few days of consciousness in the pack?” Inara raised a question and deep down within me, I knew I had been played.
Played by the people I called family…
As if Lucas could read my mind, he etched, “Let’s not assume, Fiona. We should visit the white wolves and ask questions.”
Despite the words he said to me, I knew he could tell as well. He could tell that once again I had been betrayed, and deceived by my loved ones.
But why would they lie to me after accepting me into their pack?
“That’s a question we should ask them,” Inara said to me.
I quickly picked a decent shorts and jacket from the wardrobe and j walked into the bathroom to change as more questions flooded my mind.
“Who brought you home?” I asked the twins, hoping Susanna was back in the apartment so I could ask her first.
I thought she was my friend.
Katie answered, “We came alone, Mom.”
My eyes shifted to Katie and I frowned but before I could say a word about how it wasn’t safe for them to walk around alone, I thought I heard Katie say, “Please don’t get mad,” but her lips remained sealed.
My frown tightened while I wondered how I could hear my daughter even though we had never spoken through the mind link. Katie and Kyle were officially initiated and welcomed into Black Fur when they were born so they shared a bond with the pack.
Until Lucas welcomes them and revokes Black Fur’s claim, they won’t be able to bond properly with his pack or use the pack’s mind link-
“I’m not mad, baby. Just worried.” I stopped myself before I could get lost in my thoughts and responded to what could have been a fluke.
Fluke or not Katie was relieved and we all left the apartment, walking to the white wolves’ apartment.
Upon our arrival, we found the white wolves having a meeting which I didn’t know about even though j was one of them. I was livid. I was angry because they always left me out.
I didn’t hesitate to lash out, “Having a secret meeting to ensure you don’t get exposed?”
All eyes turned to me while I seethed, “Liars!”
Susanna stepped forward. She was confused but wise enough to be cautious as she asked, “Fiona? What’s going on?”
“What’s going on is I just realized that I can’t trust anyone, not even the so-called pure wolves!” K seethed again and before anyone could act like they had never lied in their life, I brought out the piece of evidence and revealed it to them, saying, “You know who they are don’t you?”
I steamed with anger, waiting impatiently for the first person who would come up with another lie.
