“I introduce to you, the new Gamma of the Crescent Pack,” Lucas’s voice caused the earth to vibrate as he announced to the warriors on the training field, “Gamma Seth.”
Lucas raised the hand of the warrior who had just defeated many opponents to become the gamma of the pack. Seth has been involved in many duels for the past week and he won the title fair and square.
The Warriors cheered, applauding their new Gamma and instantly, training began properly for that day. I chose a random warrior to train with, ignoring all the familiar faces like I have been doing since I woke up, and realized that not only have I been living in darkness, but I have also changed physically.
The physical changes like the color and length of my hair, I loved, but my so-called new family, I didn’t love so much at the
moment.
“You can’t keep avoiding them, Relia. We’ve to face this truth.” Inara said to me as I dodged my training partner’s punch, delivering mine to her ribs.
I snorted, “Watch me do just that, Ina.”
Face the truth? The same one they hid from me?
Fuck that!
My wolf didn’t try to push any further which was because she was also hurt. As soon as the training ended, I walked up to Pheobe who had been training with her group of new warriors. While I have been avoiding everyone else, including Lucas, Pheobe and I have become closer.
We’ve spent time together these past few days and I have given her Dakota’s journal because she needed them more. “Hey,” I said to Pheobe.
She beamed at me, “Hey, badass Luna-”
“Not you too. Just call me Fiona, please.” I countered.
Phoebe laughed as she hugged me despite our sweaty and dirty bodies. I walked her back to her place before returning to the apartment where I found Katie, Kyle, and Maya who had graciously become the twins’ nanny.
“Welcome home, Luna.” Maya greeted me with a smile.
“It’s good to see you, Maya. Thank you for watching the kids.” I said to her while I tried to avoid hugging my kids as I was still dirty from training.
“It’s a pleasure, Luna.” Maya smiled again before disappearing into the kitchen.
Immediately, Katie started laying out her complaints, “Why won’t you let me train, Mom? I don’t want a babysitter, not when others train. I want to join you on the field. Can you get rid of the sitter-”
“But I like Maya.” Kyle countered as they followed me to the bedroom. “She lets me read in peace and makes cookies for me.”
“Well, I don’t like reading or eating cookies!” Katie yelled at her brother and I heard Kyle sucked in a breath out of shock or maybe fear.
I turned to my raging daughter, “Enough of that, Katie Anne! You’ll not yell at your brother or anyone at that. Use your inside voice.”
If she has one, god!
“I didn’t mean to yell. I just want to train, Mom.” Katie muttered, her lips quivering as soon as she realized her mistake.
Sighing as we entered the room, I said to Katie who stood before me while her brother jumped on the bed, “I know, baby, and I want that for you too but the pack doesn’t have warriors your age and you can’t train with adults. You are just six.”
Before Katie could say another word, Lucas stepped into the room and said, “What if Daddy makes it happen?” Katie’s attention shifted immediately, “Daddy!” She exclaimed and ran into Lucas’s arms.
“My darling girl.” Lucas cooed sweetly into Katie’s hair before saying, “Your sword is almost ready and I have a personal trainer for you. Other kids aren’t exactly interested in training now but when they see you, they will want to have fun like you.” Saying Katie was happy would be an understatement.
She squealed and thanked Lucas a million times before she left the room, dragging Kyle along even though he didn’t want to leave.
I rolled my eyes as Lucas muttered, “So we are back to the game?”
“What game?” I questioned, standing in the middle of the room.
Lucas stepped closer to me but I took two steps backward. He etched, “The one where you avoid me when something is wrong. The one where you detach and act like nothing is wrong.”
“I’m not playing games. Nothing is wrong and I’m not avoiding you.” I answered, grabbing my towel so I could escape him by entering the bathroom.
Lucas uttered, “I can follow you in there, Fiona.”
“No, you won’t,” I argued, taking another step toward the bathroom.
“Yes, I will if you keep avoiding me. You’ve to speak to me or them at some point.” Lucas breathed softly, hot on my heels.
“I don’t want to. I just want to bathe.” I snapped.
But I suddenly felt bad.
Lucas didn’t do anything wrong.
In fact, he stayed by my side while I was unconscious and sad. He kept the kids away so I could have the time to myself and during that time, I somehow decided to lock everything away and pretend like nothing happened.
But something did happen.
I found my parents.
I knew who I was for the first time in my life.
Yet all my brain could do was react in a way that made me look stupid now that I was thinking about it.
“You are not stupid, Relia. You’re taking time to process and that’s okay. I just hope you will open the journal soon. We need to know more. We don’t have time to waste.” Inara said to me, consoling me from within.
She was referring to the journal we found in the white shade box…. The journal I had shoved right back into the box because I had realized that knowing the truth had done nothing but hurt me.
I was tired of hurting.
“Not knowing the truth will hurt you more,” Inara stated while Lucas and I locked our gaze.
I sighed, “I’m sorry for acting like a kid.”
Lucas shook his head, “You mean, you’re sorry for acting like Katie?” He chuckled as my eyes widened, realizing he was pulling my legs. “I knew you needed time to think but I was tired of waiting, Fiona. I want to walk down this newly discovered path with you.”
“I want that too,” I whispered, letting myself vulnerable again for the first time since I found out I was White Wolf Royalty. Lucas’s belief was obvious as he closed the distance between us, trapping me between his body and the bathroom door. He drooped his face over mine but before our lips could collide, my hand found the knob to the bathroom door and I opened it.
“Sorry, I still need to freshen up.”
Lucas pouted, “I need to do that too. Do you mind if I join you?”
“Huh,” I voiced, pretending to think but I blurted, “Yes, I mind. Go freshen up somewhere else.”
I shut the door in his face yet his laughter sent shivers down my body and as I washed myself, I kinda regret not letting him join me in the shower. The thought of him washing my body helped me think less about the reality I’d step into as soon as I left the shower.
“Trust me, you have everything you need to navigate this new life,” Inara said in my head.
“I hope so, Ina,” I mumbled in response, trying my best to keep my anxiety level at its lowest and that helped me to pick up the journal after my bath…
And I found out it belonged to my late mother… right after I opened the dark hardcover.
