Fiona
Pulling myself together was hard but I did after many minutes of awkward silence and I faced Mia Lu confidently.
I choked on my words as I questioned, “W-why? Why did you choose to lie to me?”
To get rid of the anger knitted in my heart, I needed to know.
If that was tears in Mia Lu’s eyes, I couldn’t be sure because her natural eyes had been glinting and captivating ever since she opened them, just like how her skin was glowing and her hair, flawless. I could tell she was fully recharged even though she hadn’t slept for months as we all expected.
However, I was able to confirm that she was truly crying when she started sniffing as she responded, “Because I didn’t want you to feel responsible for all these people. You almost died, Fiona. Imagine what happened to me when I saw your unmoving body… Imagine how hard it was to not lose control of my emotions and tell you the truth the second you regained consciousness. I wanted a better life for you-”
“But you shouldn’t have lied to me. Did you imagine how painful it was for me to come to terms with the fact that I would never find my parents even though I found my pack? Do you know how much I longed to belong to a family? A biological family?” I countered with points of my own even though I completely understood Mia Lu.
She was protecting me… the same way I would have protected Katie and Kyle.
She was wrong but at the same time, she was right.
“I’ve realized my mistakes and I’m sorry, Fiona. Please forgive me.” Mia Lu sobbed, breaking down, which was unusual for a woman who had led the hidden pack for decades.
I had never seen her cry.
This was a first.
And my heart went out to her.
I could finally understand why she chose to lie to me because I understood that making that decision even though I was within arm’s length must have been difficult. I was like a long lost child she couldn’t hold affectionately….
That was sad-
“Please forgive me-”
I cut in softly, “I have forgiven you even before you asked, Mia Lu. Keeping me in the dark was wrong but your intention was right. You are family and-”
“I had to watch your mother die because she felt responsible for the pack, Fiona. Responsibility led to the death of many during the war and I knew Elora would have found me if she wanted you to grow up with the white wolves but she chose to come here and have you before an ordinary healer, risking her life. I simply assumed she didn’t want you to sacrifice your life like she had to do. I also didn’t want to watch you face death- I didn’t want to lose another family member.”
Mia Lu cut in and fully expressed herself, tears trickling down her face.
My heart clenched hard and my feet grew a mind of their own as I began walking to Mia Lu’s bed. I pulled her into my arms, her body shaking as she wept. She didn’t block her thoughts at that moment and I heard every one of them.
The sad thoughts about losing her sister, Elena, my grandmother.
Having to see her parents die.
Having to leave my mom behind because of her responsibility to the survivors and as a spiritual guardian.
I heard everything and before I could block her thoughts from flooding my mind, I started crying as well.
“I wanted to be honest but I was scared.” Mia Lu cried out as we held each other.
If I thought I was close to her before, I was wrong.
We had ever been close until this very moment because I got to know her… even her ordinary side that no one gets to see these days. No one had seen her like this since the war. I could just tell.
“It’s okay to be scared but you’ve to promise that this will never happen again. You will be honest with me henceforth, Mia Lu.” I muttered into her neck.
She retorted, “Only if you promise me that you wouldn’t try to fight alone just to save us. Promise me that you won’t die.”
“I promise,” I answered because I wouldn’t allow myself to die and leave my kids in this world without their mother. Then Mia Lu vowed, “I promise to be honest with you, my darling.”
And yes, we spent hours communicating with our thoughts and before we had to face the rest of the pack, Mia Lu taught me how to guard my thoughts from her. A skill she would regret teaching me in the near future.
