Fiona
It just happened.
Saying those words to Lucas just happened.
Blame it on the chemicals zapping through my brain after I was officially accepted into the pack of white wolves as their leader. Blame it on anything but me.
“Shut up, you horny she-wolf.” Inara let out a wolfy giggle, mocking me as I thought about what happened yesterday.
“That statement of yours describes you and you alone, Ina,” I said to my wolf but before we could continue bantering, Mia Lu cleared her throat, asking for my full attention.
“Am I boring you with the history of our people? Knowing the history will help you connect better to your root-” Mia Lu started explaining.
I quickly corrected her assumption, “Not at all, Tamia.” She had asked me to stop calling her Mia Lu just like everyone else and I knew I loved the sound of her full name anyway. “Although I have read most of the history in my mom’s journal, I find it interesting.”
“The same journal you have refused to show me? Elora was my goddaughter in case you have forgotten.” Tamia chimed with a smile.
We have been in the new purifying lake all alone for over an hour and she has been telling me about the basis but my mind has been wandering off to the date with Lucas. I was more confident yesterday but at the moment, I was anxious.
“She is my mother though.” I retorted with silliness and Tamia laughed, her face bright as the day.
She was a beautiful woman. For someone who was my grandmother’s twin, she looked nothing like her age. Tamia muttered, “You know I can help you know, see, and feel Elora and Elena if you want. Even Alpha Kennedy.” “You can?” I asked, fully interested in what Tamia had to say.
“Yes, Fiona. I knew them. You can read my memories and feel them like yours. That will help-”
“Just like Susanna?” I breathed.
“Yes, just like Susanna,” Tamia answered and on cue, Susanna entered the hut that had been constructed around the lake.
The white wolves chose to have a hut instead of the concrete building that Alpha Lucas offered yesterday because the hut would make them feel at home.
Tamia etched, “While I will be training you to be a spiritual guardian, Susanna will teach you how to be a memory reader, and Lori, how to be a mender. We will all take turns in calling out your buried abilities as a Seer King.”
“You are at my mercy, trainee,” Susanna stated happily, reminding me of how I grilled her on the training field this morning. “Let’s see if you can beat me on the memory field.”
“Don’t get too excited, Susanna,” Tamia said to Susanna. “Training or not, do not disrespect the last King.”
“But Mia Lu!” Susanna gasped, faking hurt.
I laughed hard with Tamia and rubbed it in Susanna’s face before we all left the hut. Susanna was to start training me tomorrow and she had just three days to teach me all I needed to know as a memory reader.
“Do you think I can tap into that ability in just three days?” I asked Susanna as we both walked towards our apartment after leaving Tamia in the white wolves’ pack house.
Susanna threw her hand over my shoulder, “I know you can. Of course, you won’t be as perfect as I am, you will be able to read, lead into memory, and also use one’s memory against them.”
“You are that confident in my ability,” I asked.
“No, my darling. I’m confident in my ability as a teacher.” Susanna answered with a smug.
I smacked her lower back while she laughed at me. However, the laughter didn’t last as long as I expected. Susanna faced me as she uttered, “He asked me to move in with him… to marry him if I am to use the same words he used.”
“Andrew asked you to marry him?” I gasped excitedly.
Of course, destined mates are expected to get married but I was still stunned.
“Keep it down,” Susanna warned me.
With a frown, I asked, “You don’t seem excited.”
“I want to be, Fiona. I’m just not comfortable with marrying him when there’s a war looming. Seems like bad luck.” Susanna replied.
“Have you explained that to Andrew?” I asked her.
“I might have frozen on the spot and given him the impression that I’m still not over Otis,” Susanna mumbled with a sigh. “Try to communicate with him, Suzy. Andrew is very understanding.” I encouraged her just as we reached the front door of our home.
Susanna nodded and turned the doorknob, holding it for me. I stepped into the living room before I thought about how quiet the place was and I saw Lucas before I realized why.
“Hey…” He muttered to me.
Susanna closed the door behind me and left after she said, “I delivered her as you requested. I need to go find my mate.” “You hired her to bring me home?” I asked Lucas, grinning.
“More like order,” Lucas answered proudly.
I snickered, “How many people did you order around to plan the date?”
“A few and two of them are waiting upstairs to get you ready for our first date, Fiona Seer King,” Lucas answered, winking at me like he was one young playboy who I had tamed.
Once married but never dated.
Dating now but a war was hanging over our heads.
Regardless of that thought, I didn’t let my smile falter as I took Lucas’s hand while he led me to the bedroom where I found Kyle and Katie with bowls of rose petals in their hands.
“Welcome to your special bath, Mama.” Kyle let out as soon as he saw me.
Katie dipped her hand in the bowl and sprinkled some petals as she sealed, “Let’s get the date started!”
My eyes brimmed with tears and my cheeks were beginning to hurt from how much I was smiling. I walked on a trail of roses to the bathroom where I found a full bathtub ready to take my body. As I settled into the warm bath, I couldn’t stop myself from thinking about what the rest of the day held…
After all, the date hasn’t started. Yet.
