Fiona
“Argh….”
I screamed in agony, holding my head in my two hands as it felt like it would be splitting into four unequal and messy parts any minute from now. I felt like pins have been poking my brain for hours. Nonstop.
Tears rolled down my cheeks as I gritted my teeth.
I tried to fight back but I was useless against the force that was poking my head, dissecting my memories, and using the pain I felt in the past to break me in the presence.
“You son of a bitch.” I cried again and again.
But all I got was a dark chuckle, “Daughter of a bitch would have been more accurate but I don’t mind having some balls so I can fuck your mind-”
“Shut up, Susanna!” I yelled, crying out loud as pain shook my body.
But again, Susanna laughed, enjoying every bit of my agony.
After the proposal that Lucas and I agreed to keep between ourselves for the time being, Susanna made me pay for breaking her on the training ground. She broke my mind repeatedly and even though we have been training together for the past two days, I haven’t been able to touch her painful memories.
It was as if she had never been sad in her entire life.
We were close to the purifying hut there was nothing purifying about what Susanna was doing to me.
“I have gotten the basis, Suzy. I know how to tap into your memory yet I can’t cause you pain like you do to me. What am I doing wrong?” I stated after Susanna released me from the pain she was feeding my soul.
“Nothing,” Susanna answered with a shrug. “I’m just a stronger memory reader.”
“But I’m a stronger white wolf.” I cried in frustration.
“Stronger but rusty as fuck.” Susanna laughed at me.
“I hate you,” I whispered.
“You wish.” Susanna laughed again. “Can we take a break from training? I want to talk about boys.”
I scoffed, “You mean men?”
“No. I mean boys. Andrew might be a man to you but he is a boy to me. You should see how cheesy he can be.” Susanna muttered.
I smiled because only I knew how cheesy Lucas could be. It felt good to have someone chessy in my life.
“What’s the latest about your boy?” I asked Susanna as we both sat by a tree.
“I decided to move in with Andrew,” Susanna announced cheerfully.
“That’s fantastic.” I gasped.
“Yes, it is. I’m ready to move forward with him. We plan to get married after the war if we all survive it.” Susanna said confidently. “So what’s new about you and your man? We still haven’t talked about the mysterious date.”
I giggled with Susanna but decided to give her something unlike the past hundred times she had asked me, “We plan to get married and mate after the war. If we all survive it.”
Susanna screamed loud enough to make my ears bleed. “He proposed?”
“Keep it down will you?” I tried to shush her but there was no stopping her.
“How did you keep that from me? For two days? I was in your head for goddess’s sake.” Susanna exclaimed.
“You were too focused on making me feel pain and pain is in my past,” I muttered in response.
“Who says you can turn a happy memory into a sad one?” Susanna chimed unknowingly and I smiled evilly.
She just gave me an idea on how to get back at her but she didn’t seem to notice as she uttered, “We’ll all survive the war. Everyone wants to protect Lucas and change his destiny. We are here for you.”
That was reassuring and I almost got emotional but I held on to the desire to make Susanna beg me. I uttered, “Let’s go back to training.”
“Someone is addicted to having me in their head.” Susanna boasted.
I let her believe she was about to break me again and dropped any form of shield to my mind so she could have free access which would make her believe that she didn’t need to guard her memories.
We interlocked our fingers and stared deeply into each other’s gaze, drawing energy from the purifying lake. I quickly found my way into Susanna’s memory and rushed to pick a memory not far from her presence.
I picked the day, Andrew tried to reject her.
In reality, Susanna stopped him by kissing him but to cause her pain, I manipulated that memory with every bit of energy flowing through my veins.
I took Andrew out of that memory after I made him reject Susanna. I also took Otis out as he stormed after Andrew, saying he couldn’t be with Susanna as he didn’t want to hurt Andrew. I wasn’t sure I was doing it right until Susanna began to groan.
“Fuck, I shot myself in the leg.” She gritted, trying to hide the pain in her voice. “You’re a bad friend. How will you feel if I take Lucas out despite knowing how much he means to you?”
At that moment, I slipped as I became emotional, recalling that Lucas could die soon… Susanna didn’t hesitate to seize the moment and use that thought against me in ways that made me want to kill her with one swift punch.
But Susanna wasn’t the enemy.
“You’re evil,” I uttered, my heart aching.
Susanna released my hand, breaking the connection. I opened my eyes and although I saw tears on her cheeks, I also saw pride in her eyes.
“You did great, Fiona,” Susanna muttered to me, pulling me into her arms. “I’m a proud teacher and I believe you just graduated from my school.”
“Thank you, Susanna,” I said, truly grateful for her help but I wouldn’t be her friend If I didn’t rub it in. “If only you can learn combat as fast as I learned reading and manipulating memories.”
Susanna pulled away from me and whacked my shoulder as she said, “Ouch…”
“Don’t feel sad-”
Susanna cut me off, “Or you are not a good teacher. At least not as good as I am.”
“Ouch…” That was me.
We both had a good laugh before we walked side by side to the apartment. We split after we entered our home and when I was finally alone, Inara said to me, “If you can manipulate memories, you should be able to manipulate the future.”
That made so much sense and gave me hope as I sat by the bed and pulled out my mother’s journal, hoping to finish reading it before dinner which I did but at the back of the journal was a small brown envelope with a writer’s letter that shook the foundation of everything I thought I knew about her from reading her journal.
Because it was addressed to me and written by my late mother.
