I was killing myself, he said…
Well, yes. I needed to kill myself to save him. I was fighting for our future but he was standing in my way.
Goddess knew I was angry.
Or cranky because I was exhausted and having Raidem yelling at me wasn’t helping me. I just needed to get to the purifying lake and tap energy from the water.
“Have you seen yourself lately? You are tired-”
“Yes, I’m tired but this has to be done. You said you would support me, Lucas. This isn’t support. You are draining me by yelling ”
Lucas snapped, “I’m not yelling. I’m simply telling you to take a break from training. You need to rest.”
No.
What I needed was a way to become a Mender.
Despite training hard for over five days, I still haven’t been able to close a single wound. Lori has been allowing me to try healing the warriors after their morning training but I have failed to heal them. I didn’t know why it was so hard but I knew I needed to train more.
I have to pass the stage of being a Healer before I could become a Mender.
“Please, Relia.” Lucas’s voice softened as he begged me.
“I can’t take a break, Lucas. Just let me go-”
He lost his cool once again, “I won’t let you go, Fiona. You are resting today and that’s final.”
Rage boiled within me and I hissed, “You won’t tell me what to do,”
“When was the last time you spent time with Kyle and Katie?” Lucas blurted, pointing towards the bedroom where I assumed the kids were… probably still asleep.
I felt guilty about that.
But I never told myself that sacrificing the present was worth securing the future.
“They sleep late because they waited for you and by the time they wake up in the morning, you are gone. They can’t even see you in the white wolves’ apartment because you don’t want to be disturbed when you are training. How fair is this to them… to us as a family.”
Lucas chimed.
If only he knew.
If only he knew how much my body wanted to rest but my soul couldn’t. If only he knew that I was constantly battling with myself. If only he knew that I found out he was destined to die in the war…
Perhaps he would be more understanding and know that I was hurting badly.
Another reason why I have been avoiding Lucas was because of the chemistry growing rapidly between us. I have had to fight the desire to rip his clothes off and go down on him.
I also had to ask Lori why I was overly aroused these days and she told me that every new Memder or Mender in training always feels horny until we can control the energy.
“He is right though.” Inara sided with Lucas. I was about to snarl at her when I heard her say, “But we are also right.”
“Seeing you like this makes me feel like a pathetic man who can’t protect you,” Lucas muttered defeatedly and I finally saw where he was coming from.
Who would protect him if he was busy protecting everyone else?
I have to step up-
However, before I could voice my argument and stand my ground, Andrew burst into the apartment with Susanna hit on his heels. They were both panting and horror was boldly written on their faces.
“Alpha…” Andrew called out of breath.
“Is there a problem?” Lucas asked and my chest tightened when I saw the look on both Andrew’s and Susanna’s faces. “We got a message from the borders,” Susanna answered with a deep frown.
And at the mention of the borders, my soul sank.
C-could it be the war? A-already?
Goddess, no…
“Some wolves are approaching our packa and from what Seth told me, they could be from-” Andrew began.
But I completed with fear, “Black Fur Pack. They are here.”
I felt life draining out of me.
My legs began to shake as fear seized me up in a way I had never experienced.
I wasn’t ready.
This can’t be happening already.
All of a sudden, my eyes shifted to Lucas and I pleaded with every bone in my body, “Please you can’t go to war. Give me some time. I need time to-”
“Breathe, Fiona.” Susanna’s voice resonated just as Lucas’s hand wrapped around my waist, steadying me. “It’s not a war.” “How can you be sure?” I asked breathlessly.
Andrew answered, “The number of people approaching for one, and secondly, Seth mentioned that he didn’t sense Black Fur warriors, instead, he sensed Alpha Clinton’s people.”
“Moon Stone Pack?” I asked before Lucas could say a word.
“Yes, they are in distress and I came here to notify the Alpha,” Andrew answered.
I snapped, “You could have done that without scaring me, for goddess’s sake!”
Lucas patted my back as he said, “We still have to be worried, Fiona. For all we know, Tristan could have taken over Alpha Clinton’s pack and could be leading a few warriors over to distract us.”
“So we are at war?” I looked at Lucas anxiously, forgetting every reason to argue with him.
“We could be but you have nothing to worry about. We are ready for this war.” Lucas said calmly.
But hell was he wrong.
