I didn’t expect Fiona to be this scared.
Since our argument, I perceived that she knew something but wasn’t telling me because that was the only explanation for her reaction and stubbornness.
I took another look at Fiona’s face before shifting my gaze to Susanna who was also looking at Fiona.
I voiced, “Please stay here with her and the kids while Andrew and I go to the borders.”
But as soon as I mentioned the borders, Fiona stiffened in my arms and interjected sharply, “You can’t go anywhere, Lucas. I’ll go with Andrew. You should stay with the kids.”
Seriously?
I wanted to snap but the way she was looking at me calmed me instantly. She was looking at me with fear buried in her eyes and my heart clenched.
“You have nothing to worry about. I’ll be back soon and please stay at home for the day, Fiona. I’m begging you.” I uttered, holding her gaze as I put space between our bodies despite Fiona’s struggle.
She opposed, “How about I stay at home but with you and the kids while we wait for more information? That’s a better idea…” I almost didn’t recognize her as she spoke nervously. She was a wreck at the moment and I didn’t even know when I agreed to stay back even though I should be with my men at the borders and figure things out.
“Perhaps she’s right. It could be the war and we both know what happens-” Lex started saying to me but I quickly blocked him out before his words could affect the tight control I was trying to have over my emotions.
Andrew etched, “Stay here too. I’ll check the situation and return with news.”
He said go, Susanna who shook her head, “We can all wait here or I will go with you if you really need to be there.”
Andrew looked at me and I quickly said to him through the mindlink, “Let’s wait to hear from Seth. I can order the men from here and I won’t want you to run towards danger whilst I’m here.”
“I don’t mind going, Alpha.” Andrew tried to argue but when he looked at Susanna who was ready to go with him, he sighed, ” But we should wait for Seth.”
The four of us sat in the living room in silence and even though Fiona and I had been arguing before their arrival, she leaned into me on the couch, like she was scared I would change my mind.
How I wished she would relax and let me take care of her. Yes, I had once failed her and stomped on her trust but I still hoped that she would trust me again.
Right there on the couch, I opened my mind to Seth and questioned, “Why did I get the news from Andrew and not directly from you?”
My Gamma apologized and informed me, “I couldn’t reach you through the mind link and I left the cellphone you gave me at home. Your mind seemed to be inaccessible so I asked Beta Andrew to deliver the message.”
I didn’t recall blocking people out but I hummed in response and asked Seth for an update. He answered swiftly, “I sent some trackers out and they found out we have about forty people approaching the pack. They carry Black Fur’s stench but they are from Moon Stone. I’ll tell you more when I know more, Alpha. Please trust me.”
Since Jake, I found it hard to trust my men like they deserved but I was working on it.
“I trust you, Seth,” I answered.
Seth’s happiness flowed through our connection just as Katie and Kyle walked into the living room with swollen faces. Their faces lit up when they saw Fiona.
“Mama,” Kyle exclaimed with wide eyes as he rushed over to Fiona. “I missed you.”
“Where have you been? I looked everywhere for you yesterday, Mom.” Katie frowned but still walked into Fiona’s open arms.
“Mom is sorry, babies. I didn’t mean to make you worry.” Fiona apologized genuinely to my surprise. I could tell from her shaky voice that she missed the kids despite her strong stance against staying at home.
Katie and Kyle climbed Fiona’s body and she effortlessly held them both with just her back pressing into my side. I looked at them, terrified of what this peace would become if it was time for war.
Thankfully, that thought died in my mind when Seth’s voice bounced off the walls of my mind as he announced, “It’s Alpha Clinton, Alpha Faiden. He is coming into our Pack with his family and a few members of his pack.”
“Did he tell you why? He didn’t contact me before coming and that’s unlike him.” I said to Seth.
Seth replied, “He doesn’t look good, Alpha. It’s better if you see them yourself.”
What could have happened?
Did Black Fur attack Moon Stone too?
Fuck! Alpha Clinton asked for my help once but I have been too busy…. I forgot about him.
I announced to the adult in the room, “Seems like we have guests. Alpha Clinton is coming into the pack with his family.” Realization drew in Andrew first as his lips parted. We both knew what had happened but I didn’t want to worry Fiona any further. So I muttered, “We need to receive them and prepare a place for them-”
“Why did they come without telling you?” Fiona asked, her interest spiking.
“I don’t know but I’ll find out soon,” I answered her and rose to my feet, intending to leave the apartment.
“Can I come with you?” My steps halted as Fiona’s words echoed.
How do I say no to her when she is staring at me like that?
“The kids-”
“They can come too?” Fiona blurted.
She wasn’t being herself at the moment yet I agree and we all left the apartment, the twins still in their pajamas.
Thankfully, we didn’t have to go far. As soon as we stepped out, two cars stopped in front of the apartment and Seth alighted from the front of one of the cars, opening the back door for Alpha Clinton who was guided out of his car by a young man who I assumed was his son.
A few other people alighted as well before Seth returned to the borders with the cars so he could transport our remaining August visitors.
“What happened to you, Clinton?” I tried after taking in the state of all ten people that stood before me from Moon Stone Pack.
“Black Fur happened to me in a way I couldn’t defeat.” The older Alpha answered before he collapsed right before me and into his son’s arms.
