“I can’t do that.” I blurted before I could think about what effect my words would have on everyone in the room.
And by everyone, I mean, Susanna, Seth, Andrew, Otis, and Benji who were officially announced as the Alpha of Moon Stone Pack yesterday evening after the funeral his people had in honor of their dead, Jeremy, Tamia, Lori, and, of course, Lucas -a man I have been aching to have within me for the past two days and nights.
“Why not?” Jeremy asked me with respect but a hint of mockery.
As an elder, he has been careful around me ever since Tamia made me the leader of the white wolves, a position with authority that I don’t get to use often because I was still training to become a better leader.
Perhaps I should rewind a little.
Earlier this morning, Lucas came to the apartment to pick me up for an impromptu meeting he scheduled with the white wolves. Lucas has been sleeping in his office for the past two nights because he and I could be in the same room and keep our hands off each other.
We were hungry for each other’s touch… For each other’s marks and the pill Phoebe gave me have heightened my desire, messing with my hormones. So Lucas had to stay away even though I still hadn’t told him the real reason I didn’t want to get pregnant.
As soon as we arrived in the White Wolves’ apartment, Lucas called on Jeremy and the others just as Otis came in with Benji and Susanna with Andrew.
Susanna joked when she saw Otis, “If it isn’t the Luna of Moon Stone Pack.”
That earned her a scowl from Ofis even though we could all see the huge mate mark on his neck. He was officially Benji’s mate … all within a week. Even Susanna has moved into Andrew’s home permanently and they are making remarkable progress as a couple…
Unlike Lucas and I.
“Good morning, Alpha Lucas.” Seth greeted audibly when he entered the living room where we had all gathered and laughed at Otis’s reaction to Susanna’s teasing. Seth took it one step further when he greeted everyone individually and said when he shook Otis’s hand, “It’s good to see you left the nest, Luna Otis. Marriage looks good on you-”
“Can y’all leave my man alone?” Benji cautioned with a smirk and we all laughed again… everyone but tight-ass Jeremy, of
course.
Who knew that the light atmosphere would turn thick as soon as we started discussing serious pack business which was solely about Jeremy using his ability to usher Crescent warriors into war?
It all started when Jeremy etched, “But I can’t do that, Alpha Lucas.”
I raised my brows, “Why not?”
“Because I can’t empower all the warriors. If I’m to do this alone, your warriors will die, Alpha Lucas.” Jeremy answered, facing Lucas.
“Is there something we can do? We have to cover all warriors till Tamia can reverse Lorraine’s spell.” Lucas muttered, hoping for a way out even though we all knew that Lorraine’s tactics could change because words had spread out that we had opened the pack to survivors or refugees- more of them arrived in the pack yesterday and we sensed more coming our way.
She would be stupid not to change her tactics.
At the same time, we would be stupid not to prepare for whatever she might throw at us.
“If there’s someone else with your ability in your pack,” Lucas suggested and all eyes turned to me.
Susanna then voiced, “Jeremy is the last Beta and the only person who can master his ability is Fiona.”
“She can start learning now and together, I believe we would be able to hold the front line long enough for Mia Lu to do her thing.” Jeremy agreed with Susanna.
And while everyone thought it was a good idea, a million thoughts raced through my mind. I was barely surviving because becoming a member was hard and I haven’t even been able to bring anything back to life… I needed to be dedicated to saving Lucas.
There was no way I would be able to handle training for both abilities at the same time.
This brings us back to the beginning, “I can’t do that…”
Trust Jeremy to pay me back with the same coin I tossed his way when he said those exact words, “Why not?”
I explained my dilemma to them, leaving out the part where Lucas’s survival depended on it. I concluded with, “I haven’t completed training with Lori.”
“I don’t see why you need to become a mender anytime soon, Fiona. Many lives depend on you mastering my ability…” Jeremy said and I knew he was right.
However, they didn’t know that Lucas’s life was also at risk….
“You can learn that later-“Tamia started saying.
“No, this is important to me and I need to see it through.” I retorted, stubbornly. “I would rather learn both skills together than pause=”
“That would be way too much on you, Fiona.” Tamia disagreed.
“My mind is made up, Tamia,” I said firmly and added before she could argue. “You said I have the right to make the final decision and for this case, this is my final decision.”
I rose to my feet, facing Jeremy, “Let me know the training schedule when you figure it out. I believe I’m late for my morning training.”
After one look at Lori, I left for the living room, heading for the purifying hut to train. I thought Lori would follow me but instead, Lucas stormed after me.
Goddess knew I wasn’t in the mood to fight him as I was barely holding back tears of frustration but Lucas didn’t notice… Not before he hissed at me, “Are you planning to end your life!”
His words broke something in me even though I knew he was just as scared as I was about what my decision would cost us… For him, it was me…
But for me, it was him and everything my life has become since we found out the truth and decided to choose each other over the hurt from the past.
“I’m planning to prolong my life–“I started saying but Lucas was still unhappy.
And he didn’t fail to lash out at me.
