ALPHA RAIDEN
Constantly, she willingly put her own life at risk. For goodness sake, she was a wolf not a cat with nine fucking lives.
“Do I ever get a say in these crazy decisions that you make? You throw yourself under the bus, drain yourself and barely take care of yourself. What’s wrong with you, Fiona?”
Was I angry? Hell yes!
But was I more terrified than angry? Hell yes!
The thought of her burning out like Tamia had warned her repeatedly scared me. The thought of losing her made my heart ache and she didn’t seem to care about her life.
“The twins need you. I need you. The pack needs you. Heck, the entire realm needs you to stay strong and alive.”
Fiona stood still, close to the but where she had been training tirelessly. She didn’t react to my outburst. It was unlike her not to have a comeback especially when I doubted her decisions. She always had something to say.
Until now.
My will to make her hear me out this time faded when she saw her face… her eyes were shining but not in a good way. It was in a way that told me she was fighting back tears.
“I’m tired, Lucas. I want to rest too.” She whimpered. She choked on her unshed tears, “But I can rest. This is important to me. To us all.”
“Just make me understand at least. I need to know why so I can-”
“I can’t tell you the reason, Lucas. I’m sorry but I can’t. I hope you can trust me because whatever I do, it’s for you, the twins, and the realm. If I want to be selfish, I will say I’m doing it for me more than anyone else.”
She cried out, sniffing back tears.
“Don’t push, just trust me.” She pleaded and although it was hard, I nodded.
“I won’t push but promise me that you will be home by 9 pm every day. You will eat and sleep soundly. You will—”
“I’ll do all that as long as I have you there with me.” Fiona cut in with a sad smile.
For a moment, I wondered if this had anything to do with my foreseen death.
“I’ll be there with you,” I promised her before kissing her deeply.
Fiona kisses me back with the same hunger that has driven me out of our apartment. I broke the kiss and let out, “Relax. Four more days and we can set loose the hunger, let it consume us.”
“Too long,” Fiona complained. “Why don’t we do it tonight? The marks-”
“Four more days, Relia.” I stopped her before she could complete her statement.
Thankfully, Lori walked up to the horrifying but, calling Fiona to begin training for the day. “We don’t have all day, remember?”
I was opportune to see determination flash in Fiona’s orbs before she went into the hut. I also trained for hours that day before going home to cook dinner for Fiona.
That was the least I could do for her.
I didn’t bother to send the kids to my mom’s place because I wanted to spend time with them as well.
“Do you think I’ll have white hair like you someday, Mom?” Katie asked during dinner, telling us how much she loved the color of Fiona’s hair.
I had never thought about what kind of wolves my kids would be until now and it was exciting to know that they had many possibilities. They could be mixed breed like my mom or full-blood like Fiona and I.
“You can have any color you want, my darling.” Fiona gave Katie a short and more acceptable answer
I lost my appetite as I thought, “I won’t get to be there during their first shifts on their sixteenth birthday.” My world shifted at that moment.
Yet, I maintained a straight face, laughed all through diner time, and played games with my kids before they fell asleep. With a heavy heart, I held Fiona that night. But I woke up feeling lighter because having her in my arms was medicine.
I woke up to Seth’s voice in my head as he said to me, “We found another batch of refugees overnight, Alpha, and one of them has been asking to see the Luna.”
I frowned, and my senses came to life, “Who is that?”
“She refuses to mention her pack or her name but she won’t stop asking to see the Luna,” Seth answered my question. “Her scent is masked as well, which makes her suspicious.”
“Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her into the pack.” I ordered Seth. “Fiona and I will be there soon.”
A huge part of me wanted to check the person’s identity before informing Fiona about the situation but woke her up and told her everything Seth told me.
“Who could it be?” Fiona asked, confused as I was.
“Let’s go find out.” I urged her.
We both left our apartment, leaving the sleeping twins in Maya’s care and racing to the border where Fiona lost control over her emotion upon seeing who asked for her.
“This has to be a joke…” Fiona growled, dashing towards the familiar woman, rage rolling off her in an uncontrollable amount.
