Fiona
Phoebe just happened to be the healer I found in Hazel’s cell.
“I’m sorry you got dragged into her mess.” I apologized to Phoebe who still knelt beside Hazel, her hand over her chest. Rather than wave me off as I expected, Phobe exclaimed, “Thank Goddess you are here. I need your help.”
The urgency in Phoebe’s voice had me rushing into Hazel’s cell and kneeling beside her. “What do you need?” I asked Phoebe.
“She stabbed herself in the chest with her cutlery. She punctured her lungs and I have been trying to keep blood out of it but I also need to fix her lungs which I can’t do here. We need to get her to the hospital.” Phoebe announced professionally.
“Does that mean she needs surgery?” I asked, understanding the concept.
“Yes,” Phoebe answered. “I can’t do that here and not alone.”
“What do you need me to do?” I asked Phoebe, avoiding Hazel’s gaze even though they were fixed on me.
Phoebe looked away from me as she said, “You can’t help. We need a car to transport her to the hospital before his lung collapses.”
“I’ll get one.” Lucas voiced from behind us before hurrying out of the cell.
Hazel tried to speak despite her condition, “A-au… re-lia.”
“Keep your energy, Hazel. I need you to stop trying to speak.” Phoebe cautioned Hazel, focused on keeping the bleeding minimal
However, Hazel tried again, reaching for my hand, “I’m s-so-”
“Shut the fuck up, Hazel.” I snapped at her. “If you did this just to gain attention then you are the stupidest betrayer I have ever come across.”
“I j-jus needed to see you and tell you that I’m sorry…” Hazel heaved, tears rolling down her cheeks. “I shouldn’t have spied on you and I have many excuses but none is valid.”
“Then shut the fuck up.” I snapped again, my eyes scanning her body.
But she didn’t. She continued speaking, “A-alpha Tristan has been de-de-throned. B-beta Louis is the new A-alpha but th- the Luna is the one with au-authority.”
“That’s old news. We know that already so keep your mouth shut. Dammit!” I yelled at Hazel, fighting my emotions as sweet beautiful memories of our time together flashed through my mind.
That couldn’t have been fake, right?
At least not all.
There must have been a few times when she was a true friend, right?
“Do y-you kn-know that he is still alive? Alpha Tristan is alive and I was sent by a group of elders to Alpha Lucas even though I strongly believed that you were still alive… t-they d-didn’t believe me but told me to tell Alpha Lucas that the people of Black Fur don’t want war…”
“You’ve got to be kidding me.” I hissed at Hazel, wanting her to hold on to her energy instead of talking.
I saw the war happen so this must be a trick.
“Will she be tricking us in this state? She’s dying, Fiona.” Inara said to me.
But I countered, “She isn’t dying. Phoebe would have said something if-”
My words died in my throat when I looked at Phoebe at that moment and saw the look of defeat in her eyes. I was about to shake my head but Hazel began to speak again, “The people need saving from the witch our Alpha stupidly empowered. Although the witch has her own followers in the pack, p-pe-people that are still he-hell bent on getting revenge out of ignorance, Black Fur members need help.”
Hazel struggled but she still managed to say, “That’s the Elders message but I also want to apologize gain. I’m sorry and thankful because I got to see you again. It’s a pity I wouldn’t be seeing K-Katie and K-kyle-”
“Where is the damn car?” I found myself crying.
Phoebe muttered just as Hazel began to cough out blood, “She won’t make it, Fiona. I’m sorry.”
“No. No.” I shook my head. “She has to make it. I haven’t forgiven her yet. She has to pay for stabbing me in the back.”
While I said all this, Hazel coughed uncontrollably and I saw Phoebe taking her hands off Hazel’s chest, giving up on healing
her.
“You can’t give up,” I yelled at both Hazel and Phoebe.
I had lost more than enough people in this lifetime.
As much as I hated Hazel, I didn’t want her dead. I didn’t-
“You are the one who shouldn’t give up. I know you have been training to be a Mender. You can Mend her lungs while I keep the blood out. You can make her brown new before her soul leaves her body.” Phoebe encouraged me.
But I couldn’t.
I was tired.
I was shaking.
“I’ll be here to help in any way I can,” Phoebe said just as Hazel stopped coughing, her heartbeat slowing down.
“We should get Lori. Lori can save her-”
“But Lori won’t get here in time to save her. Her soul would be gone before Lori arrives but you are here, Fiona. You can do this.” Phoebe blurted those motivating words.
I fought to be in control of my emotions because that was the first thing to do as a Mender. I also set all my worries aside, freeing my mind as I connected with my spiritual energy since I wasn’t close to the purifying Lake.
I draw strength from within me, pushing past my Healer self and digging deeper to reach the Mender I was born with as my father’s daughter.
“Yes, Fiona. You can do it.” Phoebe assured me.
But after a few minutes of being stuck in my own mind, I knew I couldn’t do it and Phoebe could tell too.
JHazel’s body went limp underneath my hand and I felt chills running down my spine as her soul left her body.
Hazel died.
I couldn’t save her.
And no, she wasn’t the first person I brought back to life… that’s if I would bring anyone back to life.
“Fiona-” Phoebe called for me, trying to hold my hand as I shakingly rose to my feet.
I stuttered, “No. Please.”
I didn’t want to be consoled.
How could I fail?
And what are the odds that I wouldn’t fail if Lucas was the one lying on that floor instead of Hazel?
