The person on the bed groggily looked to him, "Bao... Bao?"
His voice was raspy and very quiet. He weakly coughed making his whole body trembled. He was like a frail leaf that would get blown away by the lightest wind. Bao Bao darted over to him and pulled him into his arms as he wailed.
[Wuuu. Host, Bao Bao missed you so much! *sob* Bao Bao thought that host wouldn't wake up, anymore. Bao Bao was so lonely!
Host.. Bao Bao is sorry. *sob* Bao Bao is sorry. Bao Bao is so sorry.... *sob* Why didn't you tell me anything, host? Bao Bao was so worried when you came back, you soul was barely stable. If... If Bao Bao had been one second later, *sob* your soul would've scattered! *sob*]
Ains leaned on Bao Bao's shoulder and closed his eyes, "It's... okay."
After a long time, he finally whispered, "I'm... back..."
This only made Bao Bao tighten his hold on Ains and cried harder.
[Welcome *sob* back, host.]
The two of them stayed together like that until Ains' breathing evened out and he fell asleep once again. Bao Bao wiped his runny nose and tears and gently laid Ains back on the bed. He had never seen his host so weak before, it made Bao Bao only become more resolute in becoming a better system for his host. He laid down right besides him and cuddled with Ains. Bao Bao won't disappoint you next time, host. Bao Bao will protect you next time... Bao Bao won't let you get hurt anymore.
The next time Ains opened his eyes, Bao Bao was sitting right besides him with some sort of material in his hands. He felt extremely exhausted and wanted to close his eyes and continue sleeping, but he stopped himself. Ains slightly opened his eyes and looked at Bao Bao. Before he didn't pay attention to how Bao Bao had looked like. Now he could observe Bao Bao and Ains could see that Bao Bao had matured.
He didn't know how long it's been since he came back. Ains, "How... long?"
Bao Bao wryly smiled.
[About a thousand years, host...]
Ains, "..."
He was too tired to respond, but he wasn't entirely shocked by what Bao Bao told him. This was a better outcome than what he had expected to happen. He had prepared himself to die once he was sent back, but little did he think that Bao Bao would save him just at the last second.
[Do you... want to hear the results, host?]
Ains murmured very lightly. It like the sound of a pin dropping onto the floor in the gymnasium, "...Mmn."
Bao Bao looked at his host who looked as if he was sleeping and hesitantly opened his mouth.
[Because host agreed to a difficulty increase, the world's difficulty was raised from 'B' to 'S'. You were able to complete both the main tasks and the side missions, and have been awarded with 175,000 points for the main tasks and 160,000 points for the side missions.
Host was able to complete six hidden missions and have been allotted with 765,000 points. Unfortunately, host did not complete all the hidden mission and cannot receive the option to choose two skills.
Host's total points goes up to 1.1 million points.
...Would host like to learn a skill?]
Ains, "..."
[Host?]
Ains, "..."
There was no reply. Bao Bao tilted his head and observed Ains and found out that the lad had fallen asleep. He looked worriedly at Ains and turned back. Bao Bao opened the system store. He scrolled through the numerous items that were available. Since his host had fallen asleep, there had been some newly added items in the shop. Bao Bao knew what the kind of item he was looking for and quickly sought out so see there was going to be anything like it in newly added items. He could almost recite everything inside as he had looked inside of it almost every day.
Bao Bao closed the store in bitter disappointment. Although he already knew that there was nothing available in the shop to restore one's soul, it didn't hurt to look or hope for a small possibility that there might be something in there.
There is only a couple of ways that a host can use to restore their broken or damaged soul. The first is to send them back to their own world to recuperate and the second is through time as they complete worlds. They were an outside existence that has been temporarily brought to it this space, and could only remain here through the contract made. Their body could not absorb the abundant energy here because their bodies could not process it.
Bao Bao rubbed his left thumb and stared off into space.
---
The third time Ains had awoken, it had been a couple of days already but he still didn't feel any different. Bao Bao helped Ains sit up and lean against the wall as he sat.
[Host... Would you like to learn a skill?]
Ains shook his head to regain some clarity, "...What is available?"
He wanted to hear his options before he decided whether or not he should proceed to learn a new skill or not. Bao Bao looked at his host for a second, worried that he might actually pick a skill that was difficult to learn and overexert himself.
[Here are the available skills, host. Would you like for Bao Bao to read it to you?]
Ains lightly noded, "En."
Bao Bao smiled. He was glad that Ains was relying on him and not trying to do everything himself.
[The available skills are: Acting, Singing, Swordsmanship, Musician (String, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion, Keyboards, and Harp), and....]
Black lines appeared on his face. Σ(・口・''') NANIIII?! Why is this here? Why is there such a skill? WHO PUT IT HERE??!!
LET THIS GRANDPA HERE CHOKE YOU! Bao Bao promises that it won't hurt one little bit. ┻━┻ ︵ヽ('Д')ノ︵ ┻━┻
Ains didn't hear the last skill and furrowed his brows, "Bao Bao?"
Bao Bao snapped up looking at his host. Ains had called his name. He had always wondered why his host had refused to call his name. Bao Bao had initially thought that Ains hated him and therefore refused to acknowledge his name, but as he spent time with Ains, he found out that that wasn't the reason.
Bao Bao's curiosity was killing him why he had called him by his name.
[Host... Why didn't you want to call Bao Bao's name before?]
Ains' lips pressed into a thin line. The room fell into silence as Bao Bao continued to look at Ains. After a few minutes passed, Bao Bao sighed. Maybe his host wasn't ready to share with him yet. He smiled sadly.
[It's okay, host. You don't have to speak if you don't want to. Bao Bao will wait until you're ready to talk to Bao Bao.]
Ains finally opened his mouth at Bao Bao's response, "It's not that. Do you know what kind of world my original world is?"
Bao Bao shook his head.
[Host, Bao Bao doesn't know.]
Ains, "It's a world that is ruled by Gods and Goddesses."
Bao Bao scratched his head.
[Like the one before?]
Ains, "Yes and no. In my world there are no angels or demons, everything hangs in the balance of the Gods and Goddesses. However they feel like, that will determine how things will be. Whether the sun will be scorching hot or the waves will cause floods to happen, everything is in their hands; even our puny lives are at their mercy."
"In my world, everyone is born with a true name. It is very different from a regular name that has bestowed by the parents, as a true name holds powers. Just knowing someone's 'true name' is the same as having control over them. Once the name has been uttered, it will bind the person to the speaker. Though it only the Gods, Goddesses, priest, and prophets are able to control humans by knowing their true name, you can't trust anyone with it."
"That's why I never called you by your name. Though in your world a true name means nothing there and you can say it with no consequences, it holds a big significance to mine. I am not from this world or yours... Bao Bao, the rules of my world are very different from yours."
"That is also why I have yet to tell anyone my true name. Not even to you."
Bao Bao was listening attentively and was shocked to hear that he had never known about such a strange world before.
[But host, didn't you say that only Gods, Goddesses, priest, and prophets can control someone through their true name?]
Ains smiled self deprecatingly, "I am a hanyou¹."
