                    Declan's POV.
The next week went by much like my second day of school. I hung out with the Cullens, Alice told me more about her and her power, and I went home. For being friends with a group of vampires, shit can get pretty boring. Well, not boring, just normal.
Edward came back yesterday, like Alice said he would. He came home and he even went to school, where he apparently talked to Bella. He kindly apologized and even made small talk with her.
For the past fifteen hours, Bella has asked me constantly about the Cullen kids. What they were like? Where Edward was? How we became friends? Tons of questions that I didn't know how to answer as well. Questions that weren't really questions more so like her pondering out loud to me.
Don't they seem a bit off to you?
They all look very alike for them all being adopted.
I feel like there's something more going on.
All of these things were topics I couldn't talk about. I didn't want to lie to Bella, especially if she's going to find out anyway, but I also cannot reveal my friends secret.
I still wonder what will be the reason Bella starts questioning whether or not the Cullens are human. Right now she just thinks they are odd and maybe a bit suspicious, but I doubt she thinks they are anything but human.
Not that they have given her any reasons to question them. They act human constantly, even I haven't seen them do anything that would blow their cover. So how will Bella realize that they are something else, how will she learn that there's more than just human?
The anxiety of being a new to Forks high school was lessened when I woke this morning. Less and less people have been staring and less and less people have been whispering and pointing at Bella and I. Which is a relief of course but now I fear that people will start spreading rumors or in general being less shy about their judgements.
I hear the whispers, the whispers about me and many about where I came from and my gender identity. Whispers about whether or not I've had "the surgery" and if I live with Charlie now because my parents kicked me out.
Lots of false suspicions but the ones that bother me the most usually involved the Cullens. People will say such rude and foul things about them, then they will turn around and compliment Alice's outfit and act like it never happened. I wonder what they would do if they knew that the Cullens hear every word said about them.
I watched the snow covered trees pass by as Bella drove us to school. I usually hated driving in the snow but, Bella is a great driver and Charlie put snow chains on her tires. Although, I still don't trust the other drivers on the black ice covered road.
We arrived in the school parking lot and Bella parked her truck and swiftly got out. I followed suit after taking a few deep breaths trying to shake the terrible feeling I have in my chest. It feels like someone has gripped my ribcage with their icy hands.
"I'm going to get to class," I said to Bella as I walked past her. "I need to hand in my essay."
"Go ahead. You don't want to be late." She smiled and waved me off and looked back to the snow chains on her tires.
I walked to the side walk and towards Jasper who was waiting outside the building for me. I looked to my left and saw Edward on the far corner of the lot and hoped he was still trying to be nice to Bella. I don't think I'd let him get away with making Bella cry again.
Suddenly I heard a terrible screeching noise, a familiar awful heart wrenching noise. A car sliding and a driving slamming on the brakes. I quickly turned and saw Tyler's van speeding in Bella's direction and her frozen in fear, her brown eyes wide.
"Bella!" I cried before I saw a blur of white force itself between Bella and the large van.
I heard a loud crashing noise and shouted in fear along with many other students. Another loud crash before it was over. Everyone began shouting and running over to the scene.
A handful of students were calling the police and many other were helping Tyler out of his crashed truck. I heard people yelling for Bella and I just stood frozen. I couldn't bring my shaking frame to move forward, I'm too afraid of what I might see if I go any closer.
The ambulance arrived within minutes and I watched silently as they brought over their stretchers. My feet are numb and I can't feel my fingers because of how tightly I'm clenching my fists. Where's Bella? Is she okay? Is she bleeding? Is this how she dies?
"Declan!" I heard a voice call. "Declan! Hey!" I turned to see Rosalie a few feet away from her car. "I'll drive you to the hospital."
I stared at her and debated between running over to the ambulance and demanding I ride with Bella or taking the ride.
She walked over to me and grabbed my fingers with her cold hand. "Come on, I'll get you there fast I promise. Edward is in the ambulance with her, there's not enough room for you."
She pulled me over to the passenger side door and pulled it open. I climbed into her fancy car and tried to keep my snowy boots from making a mess of the nice interior.
"Wait!" I said as she got into the drivers seat. "Edwards with her! Hell! Why the fuck is he with her?! If anyone deserves to ride with her it's me!" I snarled as Rosalie pulled the car around to follow the ambulance.
"I agree, Edward has made a mistake and has risked our lives." Her jaw was so tight I'm supposed her teeth didn't shatter.
My breathing became short and fast and I felt my eyes fill with hot tears. What's going to happen now, Bella could be bleeding out as I sit in this fancy car.
"Declan? You're having a panic attack and you need to take deep breaths." I heard Rosalie's bell-like voice call out to me.
"I can't feel my hands." I sobbed as those hot tears fell down my cheeks.
My palms are tingling and so is my face. I can feel my heart pounding just as hard as my head. My eyes burned and large tears continuously flowed from them. I brought my knees up to my chest and pressed my fists to my eyes.
I squeezed my eyes shut and did my usual breathing exercises when I felt Rosalie turn the car and park it.
"Do you have pills or something I should give you?" She asked gently.
I nodded and reached for my backpack, pulling an orange pill bottle out of my front pocket. I took out two of my pills and took the water Rosalie had for some fucking reason.
I quickly swallowed my pills and went back to doing my breathing exercises. I took in my surroundings the I recognized the hospital from that one night I stalked Edward. I could even recognize the tree I hid in while listening to the two men's conversation.
"I feel better now." I told Rosalie, "I'm sorry for being such a mess."
"Don't apologize." She scolded. "You did what anyone would have if they saw what you just witnessed."
"Thanks for the ride, but I think I should head inside now." I explained, while opening my door and grabbing my bag.
She cut the engine and followed me into the hospital. I told her I needed a minute and to go where she needed to go, I said I'd catch up to her.
I found the closest bathroom and stood outside the doors. Men's or woman's. Get beat up or get yelled at. I felt the hot tears again and decided I didn't need to wash my face. I'd rather just be all gross from crying then make the choice between the men's room and woman's room.
I wondered down a wide hallway, looking for the emergency ward. Instead I found the doctors lounge thingy. Fuck it. I need to wash my face and I fucking want coffee.
I pushed the door opened and walked straight to the small kitchenette, I wet my face with some cold water and dried it with a paper towel. My skin will pay for this later. I made myself a semi hot cup of coffee with some cream and decided it be best for me to leave before anyone came to kick me out.
The man at the front desk could tell me where Bella is I bet. I walked past the two nurses in line for whatever and asked the other nurse where Isabella Swan is.
The emergency ward, like I thought, but I got directions at least. I swiftly walked through the few hallways until I saw the door leading to where she is. I stopped and placed my back to the wall, taking a few more deep breaths and a few more sips of my coffee. What I really need is a cigarette.
Taking one final long inhale, I pushed off the wall and walked through the door labeled in. I saw Charlie immediately, he was in is uniform and stood out quite well. Then I saw Bella's back, well I saw a woman's with long brown hair and assumed it was Bella.
Walking as causally as I could manage I made it to Charles side just as Bella asked "have you heard from Declan?"
"I'm right here." I said while taking another sip of my coffee. It's pretty bad coffee I'm not gonna lie. You'd think doctors would deserve better.
Bella's head snapped to me, making me wince at the sharp movement. I guess her neck is okay.
"You stopped for coffee?" She hissed.
I chose not to answer that, and Charlie save me by nudging my shoulder.
"Uh Declan, this is Dr. Cullen." His gruff voice said from my side.
I turned to find yet another absolutely stunning vampire. A tall blond in a coat as white as he is. His eyes the same gold but his seem brighter somehow.
"It's a pleasure to meet you" he said in a familiar voice. Where have I heard that voice before? "My children have told me much about you."
I shook his extended hand and wasn't surprised to find it cool and hard, much like the other Cullen's skin feels.
I stood staring blankly at his gorgeous yet tired face, "Bella's okay, right?" I said the first thing that came to mind.
"Yes." Dr. Cullen turned back to Bella. "Your X-rays look good and your eyesight seems to be fine."
That's the fucking voice that Edward was talking too that one night! It's the same smooth and oddly accented voice with the old vibes.
"Holy shit." I mumbled, making all three of them look at me. I just looked down at my coffee disposable coffee cup and traced the edge.
I wasn't expecting that old sounding voice to come from such a young looking man. Dr. Cullen is definitely not as old as he says he is and definitely not old enough to have teenage children. Really, how can anyone believe this doctor is older than twenty five?
Eventually the doctor left with a quick, "nice to meet you" to me and then he was gone. Charlie followed only seconds after to sign some papers for Bella.
I helped Bella off of the hospital bed and slowly walked out of the doors with her on my left. I lead her way through the hallways when she stopped.
"Declan?" She asked. "Did you see what happened."
"No." I answered before I even questioned what she meant.
Did I see the crash? Yes. Did I see Edward? Yes. I didn't know which she was asking, so I lied.
"I swear I saw Edward stop the car. With his hand, just his hand." She explained.
"Listen Bella." I got closer to her and whispered. "You don't know these people. You don't know what they're capable of. They might not be safe and you need to remember that."
"Okay. Declan, I get it. You don't have to be so intense." She chuckled.
I rolled my eyes and turned to continue walking down the hallway. Why can't she realize I'm not kidding around. I'm being as genuine as I can possibly be without giving away too much.
She started walking again, "I can't believe you stopped for coffee."
"If it makes you feel any better," I sad as we turned a corner, "I had a breakdown in the car. Eek!" I squeaked as Bella pulled me back behind a wall.
She shushed me and peaked around the corner, I moved closer and peaked with her. She's looking at the Cullens? Is she trying to hear them?
"We should talk in my office." Dr. Cullen said putting a hand on a shoulder of a very angry Rosalie.
Edward and Rosalie turned to Bella and I with matching frustrated faces. I stepped out from behind the corner, and put my hands into my pockets.
Bella bit her lip, "can I talk to you alone for a second." She said to Edward.
He sighed heavily and walked down the hall to us. She's not going to talk to him about him moving a car right? She knows that's not safe doesn't she?
I stood at Bella's side when Edward stood in front of her, I looked between the two of them as the both stared at me. "Oh! Yeah I'm just- I'll just go this way then."
I walked down the hallway in the direction of Dr. Cullen and Rosalie. The pair were walking away from me but I needed, for some fucking reason, to follow and talk to them.
Wait! I know what I need!
"Dr. Cullen? Doctor-"
"Yes, Declan?" He stopped quickly and turned to me.
I looked between him and Rosalie, "Dr-"
"Carlisle." He interrupted. "You can call me Carlisle, if you'd like."
Wait? Carlisle? Like the Carlisle Alice said would love me? This is him? What do we have to do with each other? Are we going to be friends?
"Okay. Carlisle, I need your help." I explained.
"You do?" He questioned, glancing at Rosalie.
"I'm nearly out of my prescriptions and my new doctor won't fill them until our first appointment, which is in two months." I stared at his stripped tie. "I was thinking maybe since we're friends and all," I gestured between the two of us. "Maybe you could help me out?."
"Well, you two are friends." Rosalie said in a teasing voice looking at Carlisle.
He glanced at her quickly, "follow me to my office." He put his hand on Rosalie's shoulder again. "Rose, you should go home for the day."
She nodded stiffly, her eyes once again fiery with rage. "We will all be waiting." She said with malice in her usually kind voice.
Carlisle led me down two hallways to his office asking the usual questions like how I'm liking Forks so far and such. Honestly, I expected a more interesting conversation coming from a vampire doctor.
Maybe he is nervous, I mean he and his family don't know who I am or what I am. There's a greater chance that he just doesn't want to say any suspicious in the middle of a hospital. Especially not after what Edward just did I'm sure.
He pulled open his office door and let me inside, him following in behind me. The space was much what you would expect an office in a hospital to be. A large desk with multiple neat stacks of papers, a coat rack with a black coat and a few scarfs hanging on it, and a large window that over looks the trees outside.
"Now, I can't prescribe you the pills but I can get you in with a doctor in Port Angles within a week or two. Who were you seeing?" He questioned from behind his desk.
I told him my new psychiatrist name who is a local that Charlie knows, Carlisle shook his head at the name. "I'll give Charlie a call and let him know I booked you an appointment with Dr. Dalton."
I watched as he looked through a stack of business cards, "well thanks, I just really needed to see someone sooner. Y'know for meds and stuff."
Why am I so nervous around this guy? Sure he's gorgeous, but they all are gorgeous. I haven't met him and now I'm alone in his office with him, talking about my need for a psychiatrist.
"Here's her card, and mine if you have anything else you need me for." I took the cards from his pale fingers and my mind wandered.
He doesn't want to ask me about the whole not human thing? Is he just being nice?
I swallowed and thought about the time I spent in the trees outside this building. Does he know? If he did would he tell anyone?
"I came here one night, I heard you and Edward talking." I admitted, his kind golden eyes making me feel guilty.
He smiled, lips pulling back to reveal perfect teeth. "I know."
My eyebrows furrowed and my lips pursed. He knows? No. If anyone knew I'm sure I wouldn't been confronted by now. Did he know while I was in the trees listening to every word the two men said? Or was it the harsh landing on the roof?
"Wh-. How?" I stuttered.
His smiled widened with a soft laugh. "A women was telling a nurse about a thing she saw jumping from the roof. She was not entirely specific but I checked up there anyway. Your scent is the same as the scent on the roof."
Dammit I forgot about the lady who saw me. Did she tell them about the wings?
"Well fuck, I didn't think about scents." I silently scolded myself for swearing.
"That's a mistake you'll never make again." Carlisle laughed, his hand came up to cover his mouth.
I scoffed and smiled, crossing my arms over my chest. "Cmon, you could at least give me some credit for finding what I was looking for."
He nodded, his golden eyes all happy which made my stomach flutter. I did that, I made him happy. "What were you looking for?"
"Edward." I stated. "He made Bella upset so I was gonna beat him up. I remembered his car and wondered around until I found it."
Blond eyebrows rose in surprise. "You found him without a scent? That is impressive I must say."
I grimaced at thee thought of scenting Edward, "gross I'd never scent Edward, and not all of us can get a good smell from someone across the room. I just wanted to find him so I did. It's that simple."
"You found a him with the power of will, I can respect that." He nodded and looked me up and down.
It this what Alice meant when she said he'd love me? He seems pretty happy, does he think I'm funny? Maybe even cute? I'll have to ask her next time I see her, what does she know about this whole thing. I can understand her keeping my own future from me, she wouldn't want to ruin any surprises.
Suddenly, I remembered Charlie and Bella were also here. Shit. They're probably waiting for me, or looking for me.
"I'm sorry but I need to leave." I apologized. "Charlie and Bella are probably looking for me."
"Oh!" Carlisle's surprised face is cute. "Yes, I'll call Charlie in a few hours, regarding your new appointment."
"Thank you, for helping me." I awkwardly looked at the door.
Carlisle walked around his desk and extended his hand. "It's what friends are for."
I smiled and shook his cool hand for the second time, he reached for the door and held it open for me. "It was a pleasure meeting you, Declan. I hope to see you again soon, hopefully not at the hospital again."
"I agree. I'm sure Alice will drag me to her house soon enough." I walked out the door and looked behind me, "see you later, Dr. Cullen."
He waved and disappeared back into his office , I turned back forward with a heavy sigh. What happened in there, I've never had that type of connection with a stranger before. Never had that "where have you been all my life" feeling that everyone talks about. Until now of course.
I found Bella and Charlie in the hospital waiting room talking to the students that came to make sure Bella was okay. I walked up to Charlie and grabbed his arm, asking if we could please go home.
After that he gathered Bella and I and lead us to his police cruiser. I let Bella have the front seat and I sat quietly in the back as Bella talked to Renee on the phone. I could hear Renee on the line sounding very hysterical and I silently thanked whoever was listening for making sure Bella was okay so I didn't need to call Renee myself.
Once we got home I walked with Bella upstairs and then went to my own room for a much needed nap. I locked my little attic door and pulled off my shirt and binder. I let my wings out instantly and climbed under my covers.
I rubbed my wings against my bedsheets and wonder what the Cullen's think I am. Do they know yet? They haven't had much of a chance to talk to me about it yet, I wouldn't be surprised if they figured it out. Clearly they are all very smart.
Rolling onto my stomach and stretching my wings out I relaxed into my mattress with a sigh. I don't have it in me to care about that right now. If they know and they were bothered, Carlisle wouldn't have been so kind. Why bother being nice to someone you were planning on killing?
With a yawn I kicked off my boots and pulled my blankets over me. I'm sure I'll worry about it later, I don't need to think about being murdered right now. All I should be thinking about is sleep.
At the thought I felt myself slowly drift off into a vast world of nothingness. Peace and quiet.
