Rapid loud knocking woke me the next morning and I growled as my dream Maisie vanished back into my dreams. It had better be important. I grabbed a robe and stalked to the door yanking it open mid knock.
"Jamison, what the hell!" I grumble, till I see the look on his face, his gaze had initially looked past me before worry had taken over.
"Get dressed, Lady Greystone is missing" he barks, moving back along the corridor where I can see his team waiting, I spot Angus approaching, his gaze looking at me, I can see the fear he is trying to hide as he drags a top on.
I rush to dress, grabbing my phone to check if I have any messages but there's nothing. Within minutes I am at Angus side with Jamison leading us downstairs to a waiting car.
There are cars everywhere as well as an ambulance when we reach the house. Commander Fraser is talking to a uniformed Police officer so we head for him, Jamison had been unable to tell me anything more than that it was looking likely that Maisie had been taken from the house last night after we had dropped her off. The Commander had called him to see if she had come back with us, he had hoped she was with us, but...
"What happened, Who's hurt? Where is she?" Angus rushes out as we reach him.
The officer gives us a look before looking back at the Commander. "Lachlan, this is Angus and Hector Breitmeyer, they had dinner with Maisie last night before dropping her home, you can tell them everything you would me" he introduces us as Jamison joins us "Him as well" he adds and the officer nods.
We pause as a stretcher is brought out and my heart catches, feeling both relief and guilt as we see Mary carried out, a bandage around her head but complaining loudly that she needed to stay put.
The Commander sighed and moved to meet them, all of us trailing him "Mary, you have to get checked out, as soon as that happens you can come back, but you know Maisie would never forgive me if you didn't go, Neave is going to make sure as soon as you have the all clear she will let me know and I will bring you back, and I promise" he takes a deep breath "I promise I will bring her home safe and well... I promise" she squeezes his hand before letting him go, tears falling as she waves at the ambulance crew to move on.
"What happened, What do we know?" Jamison asked as the ambulance finally moves off.
"Mary heard you come back last night, as she was coming through the house, she was struck on the head, she wasn't able to warn you or Maisie, Neave found her unconscious this morning when she arrive for work. Neave called an ambulance and the police. She called for Maisie but got no response, this woke Mary who insisted she go and look for her" he runs his hands through his hair in frustration, "She found her bag on the hall floor and blood on a piece of wood, she called me, as she was checking the upper floors, her father is a policeman so she knew not to touch anything, She went back to Mary to wait for everyone to get here and stop Mary from moving too much"
"Who?" I bite out.
"We don't know for sure" Lachlan starts to say but we all realise who it could be.
"Duncan?" I ask shakily, was this our fault for taking all the money?
"He has the most motive and knows the house" The Commander replied.
"Commander, tell me we will find her... and him"
"We will" he answers and I can see the determination in his eyes.
"What can we do to help?"
"I have men looking as well as a team from the estate checking every building, what we need is to draw him out, what do you have on him?"
"Commander, We have the woman, Strait, she is the one who committed the fraud with him, we also have all the money, both legitimate and the £2 million from the land that wasn't theirs" Jamison tells him.
"Call me Bishop. Now, Where is this woman?" he replies.
"Back in London and secure" Jamison tells us all. I was surprised I hadn't been aware he had brought her back already.
"Can you get her up here and find out what she has said to him already, does he know the money is gone?"
"Bishop, I can't be hearing this, I know you think its Stewart but until I have proof I have to check out all avenues, So I am going to leave you to co-ordinate whatever you need to do here and I will go and take Mary's statement at the hospital and start the a missing persons report. Let me know once you find out anything we can use to catch him" Lachlan tells Bishop before moving away.
"Is that all he will do!" Angus growled, his gaze narrowed on the officer.
"His hands are tied, if we catch him, Lachlan needs to be able to make a trial stand up in court, he knows I won't care about cutting corners to save Maisie, he's doing the right thing and covering what he can whilst we look for her and him."
"I get it but I don't like it" Angus grumbles.
"Should have tagged her as soon as we saw her" I mutter out and Bishop pauses, looking at me.
"What did you say?"
"She's ours, I should have tagged her so she could never disappear" I repeat looking him in the eye, not taking back what I said.
"That's it!" he looked excited "Can you remember if she was wearing her watch to dinner last night?"
I looked at Angus but he shook his head, "I don't know, I cannot remember" I told him, following him as he lead us inside, winding through the house till we entered a library. He headed for a desk and started clicking away at the computer, before swearing at it.
"Damn thing is too old to run the programme, we need to get to the base" he muttered, before racing off out of the house, Angus and I hot on his heels, getting into the back of his car, Jamison rushing after us in his.
"You have her tracked?" I ask him hopefully.
"Her watch has a chip in it, I can track that with the right computer" he replies.
"Does she know?"
"I don't think so, she's not really technically minded, as long as it tells the time she happy"
"Would Duncan know?"
"I doubt it, it looks just like a normal gold watch"
We slow down to go through the checkpoint and Bishop lets them know to let Jamison in before we are speeding through the base towards his office.
We can only watch in silence as Bishop accesses the programme and it starts searching.
