She was being released today and Mary had been rushing around all morning.
"Stop" I told her, stopping her on her way through the hall with a large basket or flowers "I'll tell Maisie and Bishop you're overdoing it" I warned her and she huffed at me.
"Put those in the hallway by the door" she instructed me, following me to make sure I did it right. Pluto was curled up in a chair by the door, the sun falling on him and I knew too was waiting to welcome the mistress of the house home.
We had been rotating being with her and Hector was there now and would bring her home, where I had no doubt Mary would look after her, as would we.
Over the last couple of days we had shared with her snippets about our families, jobs, lives and she had told us about hers. She had been most embarrassed when we had both started reading her books... and not the child friendly Pluto ones. No, our darling girl wrote very raunchy romance books.
The sound of the car on the drive had us both rushing for the front door but it was only Bishop.
"Hey Mary, Hector, she not back yet?" he questioned and I shook my head, looking past him as finally Hector's car appears.
Work had sent Jamison and the rest of the team back to London with him so it was just the two of us here. I moved forward, shoving a laughing Bishop aside to get to her door, opening it and holding out my hand to help her out.
"Welcome home baby" I leant down and kissed her gently before stepping back and letting Bishop and Mary at her. Mary fussing around her as she took her inside.
I joined Hector "How did it go?" I ask and he grins.
"I think the staff were ready to see her go, she was getting a little stir crazy in there" he told us and Bishop laughed, "Yep, she hates being cooped up"
Mary fussed around Maisie the rest of the afternoon and we could all see that whilst Maisie didn't want any fuss and was raring to get back on her feet, she loved Mary enough to allow her this time. I think it had brought home to both of them their fragility.
Hector and I took over the study and checked in with home and work, giving her time to get used to us in her home and that set the precedent for the following days.
We would get up and breakfast together, take a walk in the grounds, one or other of us holding her hand, stealing the more than occasional kiss, then she would rest, which usually meant her bickering with Mary about taking things easy, we would use that time to check in with the office, as whilst Dad had given us time off, there were projects we were overseeing and invested in and we wanted to show we could work remotely, this would help lengthen our time with her now.
We would all come together for lunch, sometimes Bishop would join us and then Maisie would disappear into her library to write. She had been both excited and embarrassed when we found the books she had written, and not the Pluto ones! It had given us another insight into her and what an imagination, we hoped we lived up to her book expectations of men.
Mary had taken us aside after one lunch where the flirting had made Maisie rush off blushing back to her sanctuary and had given us a warning to tread with care that whilst she wrote torrid scenes in her books, she was innocent...
We were taking it slowly but we knew she was it for us and every now and then we saw the matching heat and want in her eyes and knew it wouldn't be long before we claimed her fully.
Bishop had put us in touch with another landowners two loch's away that was looking to sell some land and had guided us to a number of local businesses and contacts. This gave us afternoons of travelling around while she worked and redesigning the resort idea. Smaller and more focused on sustainability with more input from the communities around it.
Maisie had beamed when we had told her our new ideas and her side comment about it would be good to have something that would keep us in the area longer, made us think about the next steps.
We wanted her by our side, but how would that work?
Ten days after she returned home we headed over to talk to Bishop about the future, he knew Maisie better than anyone else, we needed his views...
"Do you think it's too soon?" I ask Bishop nervously, we both know his opinion is important to Maisie, as was Marys and she had already made it very clear we had her blessing.
"Do you love her?" Bishop asked us and we both nodded.
"She was something we were not expecting and definitely not looking for, but now we've found her, we can see how grey and bland our lives were, she brings us life and joy and... shut me up now, I sound like a damn greetings card" I gripe at them as they smirk at me.
"You have my blessing, I know you have Mary's, so when are you going to ask her?"
"Tonight" I reply as my phone rings and I see Jamison's name flashing across the screen.
"Hey" I greet him.
"You with Maisie" he ask quickly and I feel a flash of fear, putting him on speaker.
"No, we are at the base with Bishop" I reply.
"Your parents are visit you today, Rupert just told me, I thought you better be aware"
"Hell, where are they, can you track them?" Hector asks and I hear him chuckle.
"Hang on... They are just approaching the house now!"
"Shit!" I jump up "Thanks Jay" I ring off and see Hector is already calling Maisie.
"Baby I am so sorry, I didn't know they were coming, we are on our way back to you. I promise we will be there soon. Bishop held us up... Please don't hate us" he's rushed out, blaming Bishop who snorts with laughter at our panic.
"Hector... who?" I hear her ask.
"My parents... baby, we really didn't know they were coming, stay in the library if you want, they can wait till we get there" he rushes out as we wave Bishop goodbye and head for our car, frustrated at having to drive slowly on base.
"Are they horrible?" she questions carefully.
"No, but they are a bit much and have no filter. I know they will love you, just like we love you" he tells her and I feel my heart lift as he says the words we keep avoiding for risk of scaring her off.
"Drive safely, please no rushing or speeding, these roads can be treacherous, I'm sure it will all be okay" she tells him, then pause before adding "I love you too, both of you"
"Baby!" we both exclaim but she has already hung up. I'm going to tan her hide for that after I kiss her silly, the first time she tells us she loves us should not be over the damn phone.
"Drive faster" Hector growls, glaring down at the phone in his hand as I navigate the twisty highland roads, not relaxing until we are racing up the drive and rushing into the house.
"Maisie!" Hector shouts.
We can hear laughter and head towards the sound.
"Maisie!" I shout this time, and hear her call out "In the sun room"
