I grip the pen tight and grit my teeth as the pain ripples across my stomach, taking a breath I take a quick glance at the clock, ten minutes since the last pain, was it real contractions or just Braxton hicks like last week.
I sighed and carried on, my new series had won lots of fans and I had consented to a rare book signing, Mary was here with me and I had no doubt Jamison was around somewhere. He was usually on duty if I had an event and the twins couldn't be with me. Just an hour more to go of the allotted time and then I could be back home with my feet up.
I wave the next person forward, getting their name and smiling as they tell me how much they like the books, pausing again as the ripple of pain returns.
"Time to go" Mary says appearing at my side, her hand raised as she calls the staff over "I'm afraid we will need to cut this short, please take details and we will send out bookplates to those still waiting" she orders.
"But..." I start and she cuts me off with a glare as Jamison joins her.
"Get her to the car and call the boys, she's in labour" Mary tells him.
"What!" I almost laugh at the look of panic on Jamison's face. "How, Why, They are going to kill me" he rushes out and I can help but laugh and groan as another contraction hits.
"Men!" Mary growls, her arm coming around me as she leads me towards the door, Jamison rushing past us to open doors and wave the waiting driver forward, his phone already to his ear as he calls my twins.
"Yes, Yes, Now!" he barks before hanging up, directing the driver to take us to the hospital.
Mary and I exchange a look and smile "Don't forget to call Bishop" she reminds him and he pulls his phone back out of his pocket groaning but letting him know.
The drive to the hospital is a short one as we are already in town as I step out of the car, I double over as another contraction hits and I feel a gush... "My waters broke" I gasp out, realising there is no going back, my babies were coming. The worry is lost in the rush of booking in details and answering questions. Mary steadfast at my side but I wanted my men.
"They're all on their way, i'm going to go and wait by the check in to guide them the right way" Jamison called from the doorway, still looking a little panicked which made me smile. He was usually so unflappable, unless it involved Emily and then it was a completely different story.
"Thank you Jamison" Mary tells him with a grin before he disappears and its just the two of us.
Now I was in a bed, having been checked over by the midwife, a foetal monitor attached and now we were waiting, my thoughts were running wild, would I be a good mother?...
"Stop worrying, you will be a great mum" Mary said taking my hand and sitting on the edge of the bed. How did she know what I was thinking.
She laughed "I don't need to be psychic to know what your worries are, I remember your mother having you, she thought the same thing, as I am sure every mother does" she pats my hand. "You have two men who love you, backed with a family network that will do everything to support you too and not to mention Bishop. In fact you better lock the children away, I swear that man is broody, maybe this will make him find a nice girl and settle down"
"Bishop settle down!" I laugh, groaning as another contraction hits "Hah, that I would like to see"
"Stranger things have happened" she chuckles back looking at me.
A commotion in the hall way made us look at each other and smile "I bet one of them faints" she whispered.
"I bet they both end up shouting" I whisper back just before the door opens and Hector and Angus rush in, I can hear chatter in the hallway behind them, what...
"Our parents came too and I think the rest are on their way!" Angus tells me with a wry smile
"And Bishop is 10 minutes away" Hector adds, leaning in to kiss me "He says you are not to push until he gets here"
I laugh again, groaning as again it coincides with a contraction "There coming more frequently" Mary announces "I will get the nurse and then wait with your parents"
The twins sit each side of the bed, one hand lightly on my stomach and the other holding mine "How are you doing baby?" Angus asks softly now its just us.
"I'm scared and excited, are we ready for this?" I tell them.
"Me too, and yes, we are going to be awesome parents, especially you my love" Hector reassures me and I feel tears welling up, damn pregnancy emotions, I cry at the drop of a hat.
"We will have Lexie and Per to call on if we are not sure but Hectors right, we will rock this" Angus agrees as the door opens and the doctor and midwife come in.
"Mrs Breitmeyer, let's check how you're doing" she greets me and a gasp as another contraction hits.
"You declined pain meds?" she questioned and I nod unable to get the words out, this contraction feeling much harder and trying to stop the feeling I needed to push.
"You are fully dilated, are you feeling the need to push?" she asked.
"Yes, but Bishop said wait for him, he wants..." I gasp again
"Unless he's here in the next few minutes" she warns moving back but I shake my head
"Bishop said wait" I said stubbornly.
"Baby, Bishop would understand" Angus soothes but I shake my head, I need Bishop here, he is my rock.
Hector pulls out his phone and moves to the window "Where are you?" he barks. "She's holding on for you!" "Hurry"
"He's parking the car, he's coming" Hector tells me, taking my hand again and I can feel his nerves.
The doctor and the midwife bustle around, checking the monitor and putting everything in place...
The next contraction has me screaming and panting, my men, holding my hands and praising me, even though they both look green.
I scream again at the next one and Angus shouts at the doctor to give me something, I can hear him arguing but it was my choice not to have pain relief, I wanted to feel...
The following contraction has me squeezing there hand tight as my whole body feels the pain, Hector joins in with Angus shouting at the doctor and I huff out a smile, she had warned me to expect this when we had had our last consultation and we were discussing the birth.
The next contraction hits as Bishop comes through the door, along with another nurse, it must sound like chaos, I know it did in my head, but he was here.
We had discussed in length who I wanted here for this, the fathers were a given but I wanted Bishop, I wasn't even sure why, maybe it was because Bishop was the hero, he saved the day, he fixed things and with him there nothing could go wrong.
"Ready to push" the doctor smiled at me and I nodded, Bishop coming up by my head, his hand brushing back the damp hair on my forehead.
"You've got this Mai" he whispers and as the next contraction hits I push, hearing the instructions from the doctor, whispered through my panting breaths, I can hear my men, I can hear Bishop, I can hear everything... and then a tiny wail.
"Shit!" I hear Bishop shout as he moves quickly, catching Hector as he falls, easing him into a chair and patting him "Come on man, wake up" I hear but I am focussed on the doctor between my legs, lifting the wriggling baby up to lay on my chest, Angus's tears joining mine.
"Congratulations you have a boy" the doctors says, "Breath, rest for a second, your body will get ready to do the rest"
"Baby he's beautiful" Angus praises, his finger gently stoking across our child. The midwife to the side ready to clean him up.
"Daddy, do you want to cut the cord?" she asks him and he nods, following her instructions as I feel my inside churning again.
The midwife lifts him away "Im just going to check him over, and then he'll be right back in your arms" she reassures us.
A lighter contraction ripples through me and I groan again, as Hector comes to.
"I fainted" he sounds mortified as Bishop and Angus laugh at him.
"You have a son" Bishop tells him as his eyes search the room, locking on the baby being cleaned and checked over.
"Aggghh" I cry as another contraction comes Hector rising to hold my hand again.
"Push when you are ready Mrs Breitmeyer" the doctor instructs, back in position.
"Push" she instructs as the next contraction hits...
Another thin wail fills the air and Hectors grip tightens as his eyes watch our second baby enter the world. "Baby" he whispers in awe and I gasp a laugh, but I know what he means.
"Its a boy, congratulations" the doctor announces laying the baby again on my chest. my hands automatically coming up to support him.
"Daddy, would you like to cut the cord?" the doctor ask him and he nods, Angus watching on as Hector does as instructed and the midwife takes him aside to clean him up.
"Go" I whisper to them and they know what I mean, moving across to watch the midwife and nurse work, as the doctor assists me.
"Well done" Bishop whispers from my side and I send him a tired smile.
"Thank you for coming so quickly, I know you were..."
"Shut up Mai, I knew this was coming so made sure there was nothing in my diary that I couldn't leave when you called" he stopped me. "Do you have names for them yet?" he asks as we watch the nurse hand Hector one child and Angus the other. Both of them looking awestruck at the tiny bundle in their arms.
"Titus Hector and Harris Angus" I whisper out loud enough for the room to hear.
"Congratulations" Bishop tells us again "Now I am going to let the waiting hoards know" he laughs, kissing my forehead before leaving the room.
We can hear murmuring from the hallway and then a cheer through the closed door.
The nurse and midwife help me clean up and then show me how to feed. As Titus nuzzles into my breast, I feel my milk start to leak and then he latches on and pulls. It feels so right, his weight right in my arms as his brother is safety held by his fathers, silently waiting for his turn.
Titus finishes, the nurse passes him to Hector as Angus brings me Harris and he too latches on easily, the midwife giving small pointers and easing my worries.
"Thank you baby" Angus leans in and kisses me "Thank you for loving us and giving us beautiful children. I love you"
"I love you too" I whisper back emotionally, these men, came to me and swept me up, into their arms and into their hearts and every day made me feel loved and cherished. And now with our babies in our arms our family was growing.
A knock on the door made us all grin and I passed Harris back to Angus as he had finished, straightening my robe, I nodded at the nurse who opening the door.
Mary was first in, tears in her eyes as she took in the new arrivals.
"Mary, meet Titus Hector and Harris Angus Breitmeyer" I said softly as she came forward.
"Oh my gosh, they are perfect, so perfect" she cooed over them. Hector indicating a chair by the bed for her to sit before placing our son in her arms.
Veronique was next through the door, Angus passing Harris to his mother once she was seated and making the introductions.
They stayed for 10 minutes before they swapped out with Herod and Jamison who had a quick cuddle and gave congratulations before the midwife came back and kicked them out, so I could rest.
We spent that first night in the hospital before they released me and the babies, Jamison appearing with matching car seats for us to put them in for the journey home.
Mary and Bishop were waiting for us, having taken over two of the guest rooms this last week as my due date had got closer, I knew that Herod and Veronique would call by soon and we would see Per and Lexi with their families at some point soon and as I settled into the sofa surrounded by my loves and my family I felt truly blessed and at peace.
