We gathered at my house after school. Cammie and Alyssa had got the wildest decoration I'd ever seen in my house. I had to keep saying 'No' to five tiers of king-size cake that Alyssa was trying to get for me. Cammie had put sunflowers and balloons and a dozen birthday hats and tooter things, even though there were only a few of us attending the party. But the most ridiculous thing of all was, my two best friends spent a good portion of time dressing me!
"Please, don't tell me to look at myself when you're done," I said while Cammie was applying some eyeliners and lip gloss on my face.
"You have to be a Cinderella tonight," Cammie told me.
"Well, then you both can be my stepsisters."
"Viv, today is your birthday, don't spoil the mood," Alyssa scolded me. How could I keep the mood up when they were dressing me like a Barbie doll? And not to mention those butterfly hair ribbons and silver hair clips with matching bracelets. They also made me wearing a sparkling iridescent black skirt, a top with mid-phased silver moon appliquéd on the front, and a pair of combat boots. And guess what? Even we had agreed on a no-present rule, these were what they got for me, and all of which cost, well, I couldn't bring myself to count the number on the price tags.
"All done," Cammie said proudly. "I'm sure anyone who sees you will curl up into a ball and die of orgasm."
"Oh please, stop that," I said and turned to look at myself in the mirror. I admit Cammie really had turned me into a work of art.
"Great job, Cam," Alyssa said as she was studying my face. "Vivienne, you look so..." but then the doorbell rang, Cammie and Alyssa looked at each other and squeaked. They quickly dragged me out of the room and practically shoved me toward the front door.
I had no time to get all snappy about their attitude because I had to open the door to the girl who knew exactly what it meant being seventeen. Octavia was standing in front of me. But I had to stop myself from gasping at the sight of her. She wore a black leather jacket over a loose sleeveless tank top with high heels and skinny jeans. I was pretty sure all of which were the latest Italian materials. And don't make me start on how amazingly perfect her golden hair looked under the moon glow because it hurts.
"My girlfriend looks stunning," she said instead, flashing her perfect white teeth in a smile.
I rolled my eyes at her and she laughed.
"Happy birthday," she said floridly and handed me the fanciest bouquet I've ever seen.
"Oh thank you," I accepted the flowers and invited her in. Cammie and Alyssa quickly scooted to my side while I was preparing the flowers in my mom's crystal vase.
"Woo-hoo, Vivienne!" Cammie hooted.
"She walks you home and now she's brought you roses!" Alyssa said.
"Alyssa, walking out of the school together doesn't count as walking me home!" I corrected her. "And you guys brought me a garden," I gestured around the house.
"That's different," Alyssa said, "This is Octavia Ulta—"
"Sssh!" I hushed her, "She can hear you."
"It's not like she could hear us all the way here," Alyssa shrugged. I shook my head back, knowing that there are things geniuses don't need to know. Then I escaped to the living room again where Mom was talking with Octavia.
The party was simple. They sang me a birthday song. I blew seventeen candles, cut the frosted cake and then we began eating our feast while chattering away. Everyone kept saying they never had a better vegetarian salad which my mom had made a huge mass of. But we also had creamed spinach, tofu, and even brown rice. I made pumpkin pie and salted popcorn as desserts. But Mom still asked me to heat some canned beef and chicken soup just for the meat-lovers.
"Anyone wants chocolate chip cookies?" I asked before heading to the kitchen.
"Okay, I'm with you," Alyssa volunteered quickly.
In the kitchen, I opened the cupboard to get some canned foods and was ready to put them in the microwave.
"Help me open this one," I said, tossing a can of chicken soup to Alyssa.
"Are all vegetarians allergic to meats or something?" Alyssa snorted, shaking her head in pity. "I just can't imagine living without animal protein. How can you not like a juicy beef steak or a fried chicken?"
"Just the thought of eating cooked meat makes me sick," I said with a grimace (that's a vegetarian thing, not a vampire thing, by the way).
"Aren't you hungry or what?"
"Yes, I am hungry— all the time, only I prefer a different food," I told her. It wasn't a lie either, and that made me uncomfortable a little.
"Well, that's sad," she said with a sigh. I just smiled, but deep down I was sort of mortified by her direct comment. I wonder how Octavia could deal with the temptation so easily.
"Do you think Octavia is a vegetarian, too?" She suddenly asked about the same person I was thinking of. I recall the first time Octavia heard about my eating habit, she had looked at me like she was being told about a lion eating carrots. Maybe, 'vampire' and 'vegetarian' are two words that don't belong together.
"How can I know that?" I said, feeling a little annoyed.
"Well, you both seem exactly the same to me," she said.
"I'm not her clone, Alyssa," I made my voice low but also managed to give a clear message.
"That's another lame thing about you," Alyssa said. "Isn't it such a waste not knowing something about her—of all people?"
"Oh, trust me, you don't want to know," I said. "Now, here open these cans and be careful with the metal edge. It's sharp."
I moved away to get some cookies out of the jar and put them into a bowl while Alyssa was striving to open another can of soup. I looked at her in amusement. Her luxurious life clearly doesn't teach her much about basic life skills.
"Ow!!!" Alyssa cried out of a sudden, shaking her hand up with a painful look. My precaution didn't really get through her brain after all, and I was all set to give her an I-told-you lecture, but suddenly, my heart stopped.
The world seemed to cease out of my vision. All my focus was fixed on the sweet, seductive aroma of something red oozing from Alyssa's finger. The strong scent clouded my mind like a strange impulse of evil summon. I heard the monsters bellowing deep inside me. They were charging against the trapped door of my will.
Without a straw of consciousness, I drifted like a zombie toward Alyssa. She didn't notice the wild expression of my killer face when I took her wounded hand in mine. My tight clutch caused a fresh amount of blood to flow appetizingly in my feverish vision. Alyssa frowned in confusion as I watched the red fluid running. Until I could no longer resist it anymore. I put Alyssa's bleeding finger into my mouth.
"No! Viv! Don't," Alyssa cried. "Don't do that, it's gross!"
She tried to pull her hand away, but I still held on to it. The richness of her sweet blood touched my tongue and streamed down my throat, triggering a wonderful pleasure through my veins.
"Aw! Aw! Vivienne," Alyssa cried again. "You're hurting me!"
But I didn't listen to a word she said. I was getting a rush of sensation from her blood. My body was burning with a strange lust. Then I unwrapped my mouth around her cut and then pressed my blood-stained lips against hers. I kissed her hungrily like a wild savage animal. Alyssa was beyond shock. She tried to push me back, but I kept my arms wrapped around her little tight bum. My tongue slithered through her parted lips so fast, she had to let me in. I hoisted her small frame onto the counter and shoved myself between her legs. Inhaling the sweet scent of her skin while I kissed, I could feel Alyssa's nipples rose and tingled from my uncontrollable kissing.
Alyssa, being forced into the heated moment, began to melt into me. I moved my ravenous lips down to her exposed throat, licking over her delicious-scented skin until I felt the throbbing pain in my jaw.
Oh my god, why am I doing this with my best friend?
The fangs sack quickly responded to my monstrous state. My canine teeth began to extend slowly out of my gum. That's when my conscience came to kick me in the butt. Immediately, I started struggling to fight for my humanity. The fangs still kept growing. I tried to gather my strength and shoved the demons back into the door. One by one, they eventually disappeared.
"Aaaah!" I pulled myself away from Alyssa and stumbled back a few steps. Alyssa's face crumbled with questions as she stared at me. I turned my face aside for fear that she would see my predator look.
"Vi...Vivienne?" she struggled to call my name as if she wasn't sure who I was anymore.
"Alyssa, I'm...I'm sorry," I managed to speak.
"Viv, are you alright?" Alyssa asked me. Of all the things I could have done to her, she was ridiculously concerning about me. I wanted to tell her that I wasn't alright, that I was a monster!
It took me a while to bring back my sanity and shook away the aftermath.
"Alyssa...I'm really sorry...I didn't mean to hurt you," I apologized later.
"Tell me what's wrong?" she got off the counter and came forward, holding her hand out, but I quickly stepped back, keeping my face away from her puzzled eyes.
"Don't touch me!" I said in a hissing tone. And without saying another word, I turned and dashed out to the bathroom. I had to get away before I could cause any more damage.
Once in the bathroom, I caught my own reflection in the mirror. A fierce-looking creature with a pair of hungry eyes was all I saw. I pulled my lips over my teeth, revealing a white set of dagger-shaped fangs. For my seventeenth birthday, I got to face my vampire side for the first time. Now that I had it confirmed to me, that I'm no longer the fittest anymore.
I sank to the floor and started to cry.
Then a whiff of familiar scent made me realize someone was outside the door. I opened it just to find Octavia there. I was expected her to give some mockery lectures, but empathy was all over her face.
"I'm so sorry, Vivienne," Octavia said. "I really am."
I didn't know whether it was my heightened emotions or the shame, but I rushed to bury my face in her chest. Octavia wrapped her hands around me and started smoothing my hair. Her body fit me perfectly, and it felt so comfortable in her arms, but my feeling was so boggled up that only a small part of me responded to this physical contact.
"I thought I was stronger than it," I sobbed quietly to her.
