After the experiment was over, Octavia figured that she wanted to visit my mom at the hospital. I think it was a very comforting idea. I didn't want anything bad to happen to my mom while I was away from her, but at the same time, I felt like Octavia did seem slightly aloof from me than usual. And to put it lamely, I felt a little pouty about it.
"I'll see you tomorrow," I said when I saw her off by the school gate.
"Yes," Octavia smiled, but it didn't seem to reach her eyes. She turned and walked toward the steel door.
"Octavia wait!" I said, going up to her. She turned around and looked at me.
"Yes?"
"I...er...I..." I tried to speak, but nothing came out of my mouth.
"You have something to say?" Octavia asked. Her steady eyes gazed at my face.
"Er...nothing," I decided cowardly.
For a moment, Octavia didn't say anything. She looked at me and then she inhaled as if she hadn't been breathing for a while. Then Octavia walked up to me, putting both hands on my upper arms.
"Vivienne," she said softly. "I could feel you last night."
"What?"
"I was just waiting for you to say it," she continued. "But I guess we both have a trust issue."
"Oh my god, Octavia," I said, "I didn't mean to hide..."
"The fact that you and Jacques hooked up?" she finished it for me.
My jaw flung open.
"How...how...?" I stuttered. The evening breeze went dead and I could barely breathe.
"I don't know Viv," Octavia exhaled, "I have been unable to fall asleep properly ever since I met you because my heart would pound so hard at the thought of seeing you the next day, of hearing your voice and being near you again. Why would it be different from last night? You might probably forget that I could feel your emotions. And last night...you were ecstatic. I didn't have to guess the rest of the story."
"Oh please, Octavia..." I said, feeling on the verge of crying. "Jacques and I didn't do anything. I did...stop...I thought of you and I couldn't go on. I'm sorry. It's hard to explain, but please, understand me!"
"That's okay, Viv," Octavia came to put her index finger on my lips to shut me up. "I'm just upset that you didn't have the courage to tell me the truth," she said, then leaned forward and kissed me on the forehead.
"See you," she whispered, before turning to walk away.
And I was in a daze the whole walk back to the mansion. But on my way back to our suite, I found Cammie in a corner with another girl. They were making out passionately while my best friend's hand buried inside the girl's skirt between her legs. Their moans were pretty audible in a quiet hallway. I rolled my eyes, not expecting to walk in on Cammie having a quickie right here. The girl had wavy blonde hair and a pair of jade green eyes.
Without further inspecting, I went straight toward them and grabbed Cammie by the back of her collar, tearing her away from the girl.
"What the..." she yelped, but then she saw me and went, "Oh...it's you."
"Yeah...and tell me why on earth you are here?" I asked then turning back to Cammie's fling, who blushed with embarrassment. The scent of her arousal made my nose wrinkle uncomfortably.
"I'm sorry to interrupt, but I have something to talk to my best friend," I said, and she quickly hurried away out of the hall. I turned back to Cammie who was looking down at her shoes like a guilty five-year-old.
"Where are Alyssa and Jacques?" I said.
"At Jacques' place," she said. "Probably doing what I was doing earlier?"
"Cammie!" I said. "And why did you let Alyssa be alone with her? Jacques might be in control for now, but who knows what could happen..."
"Oh now you're the paranoid one," Cammie said. "Relax Viv, they both were practicing some crazy witchcraft together. I got bored, so I tried to have some fun of my own."
"Alright, I think we should go back to the suite now," I said. Besides, I want to ask Jacques about the Deveraux Shield, too.
When we entered the suite, Cammie and I almost had a heart attack. There were objects floating in the air everywhere in the room. Books, shoes, pillows, hairdryers, even Cammie's underwear.
"What is going on?!" Cammie cried. Then we saw Jacques and Alyssa sitting on the floor, giggling at us.
"Viv!" Alyssa stood up and went over to us. "Jacques just showed me how to get objects moving. It's pretty awesome!"
"Oh my god," I said. "Has the law of gravity been switched off in here?"
"No," Jacques said as she stood. "It's just 'mind over matters'."
"How could you get all these stuff up in the air like they weigh nothing?" Cammie said, trying to grab a hold of her bra, which just floated passed her.
"Jacques, put them down," I said. "I need to ask you something."
And just like that, all the drifting objects dropped onto the floor again.
"Okay," Jacques shrugged and turned to sit on the couch. "Shoot."
"Tell us about the Deveraux Shield," I said as we all took our seats. "What's it exactly?"
"The shield was built to protect the school in a time of wars," she told me simply. "My great great grandmother must have figured out the secret of ancient architectures, so they started to build a place to preserve great geniuses, like this one."
"What does the shield have then?" Alyssa asked.
"Around the campus, traps are set up at night. There are loopholes that suck you in like vacuum cleaners and pump you out into the river. Some places have artificial quicksand to swallow you whole, and even some of the trees also shift from place to place confusing your paths." Jacques said as if she was telling us a ghost story. "And that don't include all those lethal hidden explosives, tear gas and underground traps."
There's no doubt that, getting in or out of the Ultara Academy is like going to commit suicide.
"So there's no way we can sneak out of the school?" I asked hopelessly.
"Says who?" Jacques said. "The Deveraux family built this system for protection, not to make the school a prison."
"By that you mean...?" I pressed on.
"There are some secret passageways inside the mansions that lead to the outside world," Jacques said. "They used to be the school's emergency exits."
"Do you know where those secret passageways are?" Cammie asked before I could even open my mouth. Jacques just smirked. She crossed her arms and leaned herself back on the couch leisurely.
"It would be a shame if the Deveraux descendant doesn't know," Jacques said.
When the nightfall came over, Cammie, Alyssa, and Jacques walked me down the stairs and headed toward one of the secret passageways in our mansion. I was starting to worry about getting caught, but there was no turning back. I already reported everything to Octavia, despite the awkward evening with her and all. And after we discussed everything over a phone call, we decided that we had better start our next operation tonight.
And now, I was ready for a vampire hunt.
Jacques led us to the right and then to the left corridor. When she stopped, we tried to look around, but there was nothing in front of us except the wall.
"Where is it?" Cammie asked.
"If it is easy to find, they don't call it the secret passageway," Jacques told her mockingly. Then she took a step forward and ran her hand over the wall as if to feel something. Then she began to peel a patch of wallpaper off. Suddenly, we saw the crest of the Ultara Academy engraved on the metal pad behind it.
"There you are," Jacques said with a smile, stepping back to stare at it.
"Why don't you open it?" Cammie asked. "You're afraid it will chew your hand again?"
"The secret passageways don't need my touch. They can be opened by any Ultara genius, well, if you ever find one," Jacques told us. It sounded like some kind of privilege, but when I just stood there with a blank face, Cammie sighed.
"Vivienne," she turned to me, "She means you're also the Ultara genius. You can open it, too."
"Oh!" I breathed after registering the idea. Sure enough, as soon as I put my hand on the mark, it glowed with a red fluorescent light, much like an elevator's button. Then the wall slid open without a sound. We saw a long tunnel leading out of the building. I stepped into the dark passageway and turned around to face the three girls again. Who knew what could happen after I left here? It would be the last time I may see them.
"Have you put on the contact lens yet?" Alyssa said, already looking worried.
"Yes," I nodded.
"Are you sure you don't want me to go with you?" Cammie asked me again for the fifteenth time.
"No, thank you," I said, also for the fifteenth time.
"Go along the tunnel until you see the light at the other end," Jacques advised, and I know she meant it literally.
"Thank you, Jacques," I said and turned back around. I took a deep breath and clicked off my heels and was gone.
