When we left the Hobbit House, Octavia told me she had to go to her aunt again. I had told her about my latest dream and everything. And she figured it was better to warn Florentine about the whole-Viktor-with-his-corpse-in-the-coffin thing because she was the closest connection to the Underworld. Somehow, we felt that the other vampires had no idea what Viktor was doing with the immortal body. I had a bad feeling about my uncle's betrayal to my father and his wicked role of causing the prophecy to happen was his plan.
I saw Octavia off at the gate as usual, and when she was gone, I called Mom to check how she was doing at the hospital. But the nurse picked up the phone and told me she had left to fix something at home. I dialed home instead, but nobody answered. I tried calling her cell phone again, and she still couldn't be reached.
An uneasy feeling settled in me. I dialed Octavia, but her phone was turned off, probably since the time we were making love. I didn't know, but I had to run back to the mansion. And when I burst into the suite, I found all my friends there.
Jacque was coaching Alyssa on how to generate electricity while Cammie was practicing her swordplay.
"Hey, Viv," Cammie said, "How was your date with Octavia?"
"Can we talk later?... I want to see my mom," I said. "I think she is in trouble,"
"What's wrong?" Alyssa said.
"Mother-daughter feeling," I said. "I want to go home and check on her...like right now."
"Okay, Viv, we'll come with you," Cammie said then she turned to Jacque, "Can you show us the way to the underground parking lot?"
Jacque shrugged, "Piece of pie,"
And a moment later, Jacque led us to one of the secret passages that linked straight to the school convertible garage. Cammie managed to sneak the car out and then we drove away from the campus ground and out of the school. Even Jacque also came along, but I guess she was just bored staying at school alone.
We pulled into the driveway at my house a long while later. I flew out of the car before everyone else. Once I opened the front door, my home was like a tomb. All the lights were out. I called my mom, but there was no one in the house.
"Where is she?" Alyssa's voice came behind me. I shook my head.
We walked farther into the living room. Suddenly I got a strong chill that made my stomach turn into knots. Cammie, Alyssa, and Jacque were right behind me. I wanted to tell them to get back into the car, but it was already too late. The striking smell hit my nose. Three undead vampires stepped out of the dark corners of my house. Their glowing eyes stared at us. The other one was also blocking the front door. Their teeth pulled up in a snarl.
We stood like trapped animals in the hallway.
"Uh-oh," Jacque said. "Looks like you have uninvited guests here."
"Surprised that we could enter your house, huh?" one of them spoke up. His chalk-white face was deadpan. "I really love humans. They always have stupid theories about us."
"Where's my mother?" I asked harshly, looking at the tall one in the middle, but the rest of them seemed to be struggling with the urge to feed on my human friends.
"Come with us, and I'll show where she is," the same undead guy said. Then he started mumbling in Russian, "Derzhat chto devushka zhiva. Ubeyte drugikh."
"What did he say?" Alyssa turned to Cammie who seemed like she couldn't wait for a fight.
"He said, spare the girl, kill the others," Cammie translated and then she looked at the undead square in the eyes before speaking in perfect Russian, something about burning in hell.
It must have been a pretty harsh thing to say because the vampires started sneering angrily at us. This time, no one needed Cammie's translation to understand. There was no point to run either. We had to battle our way out.
As I was lost in thoughts, there was a gust of wind brushed past my ear, and before I knew what was happening, I saw Alyssa was locked under another undead's arms. He had crept from behind, and Alyssa happened to stand within his reach. We froze in paralyzing shock.
"Let her go!" I shouted in vain.
"Easy," the undead said. "You come with us."
"Don't care about me," Alyssa said, "Go!"
The vampire hissed at her to stop, and I couldn't bear that any longer. I had no other options. It was only fair that I had to turn myself over to them.
"Alright," I stepped forward, but Jacque caught my wrist, and when I looked into her eyes, a thought rushed into my mind. I'll get Alyssa. You and Cammie take on the others.
I didn't know how or why Jacque was so sure she could save Alyssa, but I trusted her. Giving a slight nod back, I turned to Cammie and made a brief sign language, which she had taught us in case we are in a situation that required extreme sports.
Then the three of us turned to face the vampires again.
"Now!" I cried.
And we charged together.
Jacque rushed out, throwing one hand forward. Suddenly the undead guy who was holding Alyssa got knocked back, breaking his grip. It seemed as if some invisible force had kicked him out of the spot. He went crashing into the wall hard. Cammie drew out her sword and clicked it open. A long steel blade burst to its full length the instance, all black and shiny like the sight of death.
She charged the other two heroically. I took the leader of them. He greeted me with a blow, but I dodged and kicked his kneecap to the side. The vampire roared and tried to punch me, but I jumped back, missing his iron fist.
The undead hissed in frustration. I swiveled myself around, pulling a spinning backward kick in the air. Once my heel crushed his face, the vampire's head snapped away and something black spurted from his mouth. I grimaced at the smell of the undead's blood.
The vampire cursed me in Russian again. From the corner of my eyes, I saw Jacque was standing far away from her opponent, but with the motion of her hand, the guy just floated into the air like a balloon.
Then Jacque threw him against one wall and then the other, crushing around the living room like a bouncing ball. Finally, the guy fell to the floor again twisted and broken, his chest rising once and then becoming still. That was probably the scariest psychic power I had ever seen.
"Alyssa!" Cammie yelled from the other side of the hall, "I forget where to turn the electricity on!"
I was too busy dodging my attacker that I didn't even notice Alyssa was sitting on the floor, watching us like a horror movie, but at least she was in the safest place now.
Cammie was struggling with her sword while managing to smack the metal blade on the vampire's head. I didn't know hard she had hit, but the undead guy cried out in genuine pain. His pale face started oozing black blood.
"Twist the end of the hilt, Cammie!" Alyssa yelled back. Cammie started swinging her sword at the other one who jumped at her. She dodged his grasp and then she saw a golden opportunity to stab him through his rib cage. The vampire screamed in agony. He fell to his knees with a pained face. Cammie's sword still buried in his chest.
"Don't underestimate the humans, buddy," Cammie said then twisted the end of the hilt. The electricity came rushing out, arching around the blade and hit the vampire with frantic shocks. After writhing uncontrollably for a moment, the guy fell on his back, completely lifeless. Then another one came at Cammie, but she only gave one strike of the sword across his chest like a samurai, sending a high voltage of electric wave through his body. He collapsed on the floor. Cammie ran her sword through his chest without batting an eye. Then he, too, was put to death again by my fiercest human friend.
"Viv, watch out!" Alyssa shouted when my attacker shot out and pushed me against the wall. His hands tightened around my throat, but I also got mine on his. I kept him within arm-length, trying to avoid his venomous bite. He was way taller, so I was lifted off the floor like a kid. My sharp canines started to push themselves out of the soft tissue of my gum. As soon as my fangs emerged, I felt a tug of sensation running through my veins, like a strong instinct to kill.
"Is that all you've got, half-blood?" He sneered in my face. The rage began to engulf my vision. I kneed him in the stomach and heard a satisfying oof!
He released me, doubling over. I took that time to smack my hands over his sensitive ears, causing his eardrums to pop. He howled like a wild animal and stumbled back. I did a quick running start and jumped into the air, crushing my knee against his face with all my force. I heard the sound of the soft bones crack. The undead cried, covering his face. Then I delivered another hard roundhouse kick over his neck.
Snap!
The vampire dropped on the floor like a fallen cow.
Cammie ran to my side. She had switched off the electricity but still kept the blade on guard just in case. Looking at the vampire I had defeated, she asked, "Are you alright?"
I nodded silently, pressing my lips together to hide my dagger-shaped fangs. I don't know whether it was a crime to kill someone who was already dead, but I had no time to feel guilty about it.
"Viv!" She motioned to us, "Come quick, it's Jacque."
Cammie and I rushed over. Alyssa was kneeling down next to Jacque, who was now lying still on the floor.
"Did the undead hurt her?" I asked Alyssa.
"I don't know," Alyssa said anxiously. We pulled Jacque off of the floor. Cammie supported her back.
"I think she's just too exhausted," Cammie said and for the first time, I saw her looked concern about Jacque, too.
"We should put our hands on her. She needs energy," I said and took one of her hand, Cammie took the other. But it was Alyssa who leaned over Jacque and kissed her lips. Cammie and I looked at each other. But after a moment, Jacque stirred into consciousness. I heard Alyssa gasped and pulled back, but she was still looking okay. Jacque opened her eyes and blinked a few times before looking directly at us.
"You're okay, Jacque?" Alyssa said, placing her palm on her face.
"I'm fine," Jacque said softly.
We all let out a loud sigh of relief. I was so thankful to everyone was unharmed. I would never forgive myself if anything had happened to any of my friends. We helped Jacque to get up. She still looked a little pale, but she could stand.
Then a different chill shook my entire body. I turned my attention to the door. It was getting closer. Everyone understood the anxiety in my eyes and followed my gaze.
"What is it, Vivienne?" Cammie asked. I could see several dark and tall figures coming toward the house.
From the distance, their golden eyes glowed.
"The True-blood," I whispered. They were also the uninvited guests tonight, and this could mean death was coming close. I turned to my best friends again.
"You guys escape through the back door, I'll take care of them," I said.
"No way," Cammie said sternly. She was always the first to say 'No' to running, but never to fighting. I just wanted to yell at her, but Alyssa interrupted me.
"We won't go anywhere without you, Viv," she said.
"Yeah, don't be a hero alone," Jacque added.
I just didn't know what to say. Finally, the vampires were on the front porch and then passed the threshold of my house.
For a moment, they just looked around and then were surprised when they saw me. I guess in the dark room, my eyes were glowing as bright as theirs. The vampires got even more amazed when they looked around the brokenness of the place. Undead vampires were lying cold around the floor.
Then one of the newcomers came forward.
I took a defensive step in front of my friends.
"Don't come any closer," I said as harsh as I could.
"We're not here to hurt you, your highness," one of them spoke and bowed at me with his right fist over his heart. "My lord wishes to speak to you."
"Who's your lord?" I asked, blinking in confusion.
"Dimitri Rozovsky,"
"He's here?" I said.
"And so is your mother," he nodded.
