Octavia and I exchanged a look and then we both jumped right back on the coffin again. Alyssa and Jacque followed suit. The coffin shook harder. Octavia and I were using all our body strength and weight to hold off, and I was sure Jacque did the same with her mental power. Alyssa didn't count much on this department, but she was also trying to help.
"Cammie!?" I said when she didn't come along. She was kneeling before the golden coffin and stared intensely at the inscription on the side.
"There's a Vedic mantra here," she said. "I'm trying to read it. It's all Sanskrit mixed with ancient Khmer, holy cow!"
I could hear the screaming rage of the immortal underneath us.
"Cammie, stay calm and translate whatever the heck you can," Jacque said. "Does it say anything to hold this thing down permanently?"
"I am calm!...but...Oh my god, it says you have to have the ancestral key to close the coffin!" she said.
"WE DON'T HAVE TIME TO FIND A DAMN KEY!" Jacque yelled.
"Ancestral key?" Octavia said with a spark of realization in her eyes. Then she looked at me. "My mom had told me about the ancestral keys once. They were given to each royal family around the world to keep as their crests."
"Oh, so that means my father's necklace is a key?" I said and quickly pulled out the royal crest through my collar shirt.
"Looks like that to me," Jacque said, "I think the lock hole is right here."
She brushed her hand over a carved picture of the sun at the head of the coffin. And the round carving thing was made inward, about the size of my medallion necklace. Then a loud bang from the coffin almost tipped us all off, but we kept our weight balanced, trying to hold down the trembling sarcophagus.
Without further delay, I placed the crest into the hole and pushed it. The lock clicked and rotated. Then the golden coffin made cracking noises as if some inner mechanism started running. And then the heavy cover fastened itself securely to the coffin with a final clash.
"She's locked!" I said triumphantly. Then we all got off the sarcophagus and backed away from it. Even if the coffin was closed, the immortal was pretty much alive and literally kicking. I winced as we all could still hear the piercing cry and cursing from the inside. It must be torturing for Pisaca to be back to her old prison cell. That was like being buried alive.
"Cammie, how do we put her back to sleep?" I said, feeling a little sentiment more than I should.
"Sing her a lullaby?" she shrugged.
"Cammie please," Alyssa said, "I can't bear hearing her like this anymore."
"We can't leave the immortal like that," Octavia said, "As long as she's fully awake, she's still dangerous."
"Okay, I'll read the inscription again," Cammie said and returned to the coffin. After a while, she turned back to us. "I found a Vedic poem."
"Translate it," I said to her.
"It says 'The body is an altar, the mind is the fire blazing, sacrificing the sparks of the tree of Karma,'" Cammie finished and looked back at us.
"What does it mean?" Alyssa asked.
"It means the body is nothing but an empty shell if the mind has lost its karmic energy," Octavia explained to us. "Take away her karma or desire, she will lose her grip on the physical world."
"What? Like making her enlightened or something?" Alyssa asked, looking confused.
"No, not like that, we have to open the Chthonian element in her mind," Octavia said. "It's almost the same as when we're falling asleep."
"What is Chthonian?" I said.
"A Greek word for Nether," Cammie said, "which exists in the cosmos as a gateway between the land of the Living and the Dead. So that means we have to bring the Death-Force to drains life from this immortal creature."
"I think I can do it," Jacque said, stepping forward.
"But Jacque," Alyssa breathed. "How are you going to bring up Death?"
"Death is an aspect of life," she said. "It's in all things that live, between matter and energy. The immortals must be manipulators of the Chthonian element, that's why they can cheat death. If I could absorb Life-Force, then I would just have to absorb her karmic energy and unleash the Death-Force inside her."
"Are you sure you can do it?" Cammie asked. "Only ancient priests could be this creepy, you know?"
"At least, I can try," Jacque said. Cammie backed away from the golden coffin as Jacque made her way toward it. Then she stood straight and closed her eyes, extending her arms.
Strong winds started to rage through the building again. We heard the growls of thunders and blinding flashes of lightning in the sky. A moment later, Jacque gasped and floating golden energy seeped out of the coffin, traveling into Jacque's parted lips. The screaming of the immortal began to quiet down slowly until there was nothing but the sound of a writhing storm.
Then Jacque dropped her arms to her sides and opened her eyes again. Everyone was quiet for a moment and then we rushed to her.
"Oh my god, you did it!" Alyssa cheered and hugged her. Octavia and I smiled at each other.
Suddenly I heard a sharp humming sound and then a burst of sparks exploded from the wall. We looked up to see the lights went off and on and the wires began melting with heat. Obviously, the storm had caused the electric current to jam and threatened to explode.
The smell of oil from the fallen tanks floated to my nose.
"Everyone get out of here!" I said. Then another burst of electric sparks hit the oil tanks, it caught on fire immediately. The five of us sprinted out of the warehouse as those wooden boxes and oil tanks started to burn faster than a haystack.
When we got out to the front yard, I looked back at the building. The immortal and my dead uncle were inside. The flames started to engulf everything.
"Get down!" Octavia yelled and we all dropped to the ground.
At the same instance, the building exploded. A roar of ear-splitting blast sounded. A powerful eruption sent a cloud of red flame toward us. We were sure the fire was going to swallow us whole, but suddenly Jacque hurled herself at us and wrapped her arms around our bodies.
Then we found ourselves surrounded by roaring fire. But then I realized Jacque was blocking it away. Under normal circumstances, anyone would turn to ash, but she had done her best to form a perfect fire-proof shield, letting not a single tongue of flames touched us. This girl amazed me to no end.
I felt the heat licking our faces and seeping through our clothes. The blazing fire growled around us furiously for a full minute and then it died down and disappeared.
But we all felt like baked potatoes after that.
"Everyone's okay?" I tried to speak through the choking smoke.
"I've got a third-degree burn on my hair," Alyssa coughed.
"Hey, got a great tan, too," Cammie mumbled jokingly, which meant she was also fine.
"I'm alright," Octavia said with her calm quiet voice.
"Jacque?" I turned around. Jacque was lying mostly on top of me. She wasn't moving. She must have used up all her kinesics power to save us. I rolled her onto her back. Her face was rosy red and her whole body was so hot as if she was running a fever.
"Oh my god, no, Jacque! Can you hear me?" Alyssa hurried to plant a kiss on Jacque's lips, desperately trying to transmit her energy, but Jacque was lying still.
"Please wake up," Alyssa's tears streamed from her eyes, "...don't you die on me!... Jacque...Please..."
I just sat there, not knowing what to do.
"I love you, Jacque," Alyssa whispered tearfully.
"There's no need to cry, silly girl," Jacque's soft voice said weakly, but her eyes still closed. "I can hear you all right...and I love you, too."
Everyone's face lit up, including Alyssa's. With so much relief, Alyssa pulled Jacque into her arms. Something wet rolled down my cheeks which I realized was my own tears, but this time it was tears of joy.
"Oh thank god! Jacque...you're alive!" Alyssa screamed. "You scared the jeep out of me!"
"You'll kill me instead if you keep squeezing me like that," Jacque replied, and everyone laughed.
"Girl, you saved us!" Cammie patted Jacque's on the back. "You're my hero!"
"No," she said before pulling away from Alyssa, "I didn't save you guys. We just kind of saved each other."
Then Jacque raised her hands up as if to make us remember something. Then I realized during the explosion, she had wrapped her arms around us. With that, we had shared our energy, and together we could generate strength.
