It happened in early spring.
The air was cool but smelled like new grass and rain-soaked pavement. During lunch, Amy dashed toward the swings, laughing with wild joy — and then tripped.
There was a sharp cry. Her knee scraped hard against the concrete, tearing her tights and skin. Dahlia was at her side in an instant.
Amy sat up, blinking back tears. “I’m okay,” she muttered, voice shaking. “Totally… fine.”
Dahlia knelt beside her, heart pounding. “Don’t move. And… don’t tell anyone.”
Amy stared as Dahlia reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a slightly wilted daisy, its petals still bright.
“You carry flowers around?” Amy sniffled.
“Sometimes,” Dahlia whispered. She pressed the flower to Amy’s scraped knee, then placed her own small hand on top. Her fingers glowed with a faint golden light for a few seconds.
Amy’s eyes widened. “Whoa.”
The bleeding stopped. The wound shrank. The pain faded like morning fog.
Amy blinked. “Dahlia… what… was that? Are you magic?”
Dahlia looked down, panicked. “You can’t tell anyone, okay? Not even your mom. Or your dog.”
Amy’s mouth was still open in awe. But after a moment, she nodded solemnly. “Secret superhero pact.”
She offered her pinky.
Dahlia linked hers without hesitation. “You’re part of the team now.”
Amy smiled. “I always knew you were secretly awesome.”
Dahlia grinned. “Now you know.”
They sat under the swings, their pinkies still linked, and the daisy in Amy’s hand slowly closed its petals, like it was keeping a secret too.
