MARISOL
The next morning, with my bags packed and Mr. Buttons safely in Maria’s care, I made my way to the music room.
It was filled with memories of me and Dante, the air heavy with the scent of polished wood and lingering notes. I ran my fingers along the cool surface of the piano, a bittersweet smile tugging at my lips.
Taking a deep breath, I sat down, pulled out my phone, and began recording.
I sang the song I had written for him. Words that poured from my heart in the quiet moments after everything fell apart.
Farewell My Love
I can’t stay where your heart won’t go.
I gave you my heart, no regret,
Left every piece where your silence met.
I tried to love the man you hide,
But you locked the door and stayed inside.
You were my home, my safest place,
The world fell quiet when I saw your face.
But love can't grow where walls won’t fall.
I reached for you, you felt nothing at all.
Farewell, my love. Farewell, my friend.
I thought we'd make it to the end.
You changed my world, then set me free.
You didn’t want my love, but you’ll always have me.
I gave you my soul without defense.
I laid it down beneath your touch.
You held it once, but not enough,
And I was left with almost nothing.
I told you things I’d never said.
I wrapped your pain in words I bled.
But you just turned your eyes away,
And now you’re gone. I couldn’t make you stay.
Farewell, my love. Farewell, my friend.
You took all I had to spend.
You never tried to let me in,
You left, and called it a win.
Still, thank you for the time we shared.
For every night it felt you cared.
I learned to breathe because of you,
Even if you never wanted me to.
Farewell, my love. Farewell, my friend.
This is the last song I’ll ever send.
You cared for me, just not enough to stay,
But I’ll carry grace as I walk away.
Each line cut deep, raw and honest. By the end, my voice trembled, but I kept going. I owed myself this final moment, to say everything I couldn’t say to his face.
I saved the video and set my phone on the piano.
Then, I placed a small Post-it on it with a simple message: Play this. Beside it, I laid the black credit card Dante had given me, my wedding ring, and the signed divorce papers.
These were the final remnants of a life I could no longer hold onto. The credit card, a gesture born of guilt. The ring, a promise never kept. And the divorce papers, my painful acceptance that we were truly done.
Leaving everything behind like this felt necessary. A clean break. One that would finally allow me to start over.
One more thing, then it’s done. I still needed to reach out to Maria for Mr. Buttons and my things.
With one last look around the music room, I walked out and closed the door softly behind me.
My heart felt heavy, but I reminded myself this was the closure I needed.
As I stepped into the hallway, I nearly bumped into Max, one of Dante’s men. His gaze dropped to the suitcase in my hand, his eyes narrowing slightly.
“Heading somewhere, Mrs. Kincade?” he asked, his tone light, but his expression guarded.
I offered a calm smile. “Just a short trip, Max. And please, just call me Marisol.”
He hesitated, his gaze flicking over my face before he nodded.
“Of course. Miss Marisol,” he amended, though the suspicion in his eyes didn’t wane. “Dante’s aware?”
“He is,” I replied, keeping my tone even. “And my cab’s already out front.”
He studied me for a beat, then cleared his throat.
“I’d be happy to walk you out.”
“Thank you, Max, but Maria is already walking me out,” I said, nodding down the hall where Maria waited near the door. I kept my tone light, dismissive.
He hesitated again, searching my face, clearly unsettled.
I let out a soft, amused laugh and shook my head. “Max, do you think I’m running away? I wouldn’t leave without Mr. Buttons.”
I gave him a teasing smile, watching as his face softened slightly, the hint of a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth.
Max’s shoulders relaxed, and he gave a nod, the suspicion in his eyes fading. “Safe travels, Miss Marisol,” he said, stepping aside.
As I walked down the hall, I could feel his eyes on me, the tension replaced by a faint trace of concern.
I hadn’t wanted to reveal that it was over between me and Dante. His men could hear it from him, not me.
Reaching the front door, I joined Maria, grateful to have slipped past Max’s guard with nothing more than a smile and a little humor.
I hugged Maria tightly one last time, clinging to the warmth and comfort we’d always found in each other.
“Take care of yourself out there, mija,” Maria whispered, her voice thick with emotion. “May God bless you and keep you safe.”
“I promise,” I said, my voice firmer now, though the tears hovered just beneath the surface. “I’ll be okay. I just need to start over, somewhere far from here.”
As I stepped toward the cab, I paused, taking one last look at the house that had been my home. A place of both pain and fleeting happiness.
The memories pulled at me, but I knew I had to move forward.
With a sad wave to Maria, I whispered, “I love you,” before getting into the cab.
As the taxi pulled away, I watched the house disappear from view.
For the first time, peace stirred beneath the sadness. I turned my gaze forward, ready to build a new life far from the heartache I was leaving behind.
DANTE
I leaned back in my seat on the private jet, staring out the window at the darkening sky.
The steady hum of the engines was the only sound, a low drone behind the thoughts I kept trying and failing to silence.
I was supposed to be focused on the business ahead, but my mind kept circling back to Marisol.
The memory of her tear-filled eyes stayed with me.
Not loud or dramatic. Just there. Quiet. Unshakable.
Like a shadow that wouldn't disappear no matter how much light I threw at it.
I hadn’t meant to hurt her.
That lie about revenge had been a coward’s escape.
Something I grabbed in a moment of desperation when she asked if I’d made her fall in love on purpose.
The truth was messier. More fragile.
I had been her first kiss, her first lover, and now her first heartbreak.
Perfect.
A constant reminder of the innocence she’d handed me and how carelessly I’d shattered it.
I remembered the way her face lit up from the simplest touch.
The way she trusted me without hesitation.
Then her words came back, sharp and unforgettable.
Your gentle words were nothing but blades in disguise and I mistook the knife for a caress.
She’d spoken them calm and steady, like they were meant to end everything.
Now, knowing you don’t want my love... you’ll always have my gratitude.
The hollow ache in my chest deepened.
She meant every word. I knew it.
And now, with miles between us, I couldn’t outrun the regret that kept gnawing at me.
I hurt her because I was too afraid to face what I felt.
Too much of a coward to admit what she really meant to me.
I let fear decide for me.
I didn’t protect her. I protected myself.
Even Maria had seen through me.
Her silence had said enough.
The look in her eyes, that quiet disappointment, made it clear she’d expected more.
She didn’t have to speak.
The weight of her judgment came with me onto the plane.
Felix hadn’t said much either, but I saw the questions in his eyes.
That same look he gave when he knew I was hiding something.
He pulled me aside before I boarded, his grip firm on my shoulder.
“Don’t make this a mistake you can’t take back,” he said.
I didn’t respond. Couldn’t.
I’d already buried myself too deep in denial to hear the truth behind his words.
And still, even with him standing right there, my thoughts had drifted back to her.
The meetings over the next few days felt like noise. Meaningless.
How the hell am I supposed to care about numbers and deals when all I see is her face?
I closed my eyes and saw her again.
Marisol, trembling as she asked if it had all been a lie.
Her voice shook.
She bypassed every firewall I’d ever built, slipped straight into the system and rewrote everything.
I’d chosen the lie over the truth.
Not because it was easier, but because I didn’t know how to live with the truth.
I didn’t want her to fall for me because I was terrified of falling for her.
As the jet touched down in London, I tried to bring my attention back to the present.
But no matter how hard I fought it, her face and the weight of those words stayed with me.
I had business to handle, but deep down, I knew the truth.
Some consequences couldn’t be outrun.
