ELROY
It was all working exactly as planned. I watched Fay walk with her mother to a spot outside the backyard but from our angle, we could see them clearly.
She could have stopped this if she wanted but she choose to be stubborn, and now, look at the results. At least I did good not to present the matter when we stated eating.
"What is the matter with you Elroy, you promised." Damien said, glaring at me.
I rolled my eyes. "I didn't do anything, I just thought that the silence was deafening and someone had to break it so... I asked an honest question." I said.
"Honest question? This was your plan all along, to get Fay into trouble." Damien said.
Grandma looked between me and Damien. "Why would Elroy try to put Fay in trouble?" She asked, looking clueless.
"Grandma... Please just relax." Rhea said, holding my grandma's shoulder.
"Told you this was a bad idea Damien." Cade muttered.
"What ever this is, it isn't Elroy's fault. It wasn't right for Fay to speak to Catherine like that." Sarah butted in.
"What did Fay say to Catherine? She only objected to Catherine's opinion. I don't see anything disrespectful about that." Cade said with a shrug, picking up his pudding.
"Catherine is her mother, she should have at least respected her opinion." Sarah said. "And besides, Catherine is right. Fay shouldn't be working for a competing company, it doesn't look right to the public." She added.
"Thank you." I said, looking over at the direction where Fay and her mother were busy arguing.
"But still, Fay should be the one in control of her life... Elroy has no right to stop her from doing whatever she wants to do." Rhea said.
I rolled my eyes. "Mind your business Rhea." I muttered.
"Fay is a friend, therefore it is my business." Rhea gritted out.
"What is going on?" Grandma asked, looking left out. "Elroy did you ask that question on purpose?"
"What? No Grandma. It just came out, if I had known it would lead to this, I wouldn't have said a word. Believe me." I said, trying to convince my grandma.
"You manipulative bastard. You did this on purpose. Grandma he is lying!" Damien said.
"Am I now? Do you have proof? Come on Damien? What will I gain from ruining this brunch?" I asked innocently.
"Yvonne's loss." Rhea said.
I glared at her from across the table. "What did I say about minding your business?"
"And what did I say about Fay being a friend?" She retorted.
"Grandma! Warn Rhea." I said, getting pissed.
Cade sighed. "Kids." He muttered.
"Rhea is right, you shouldn't tell her to mind her business, Fay is a friend, and when we see something going wrong with her, we are here to help." Damien said.
"Damien I've heard enough with you trying to right the wrongs of everyone! What the hell is your problem huh? You should learn to mind your own business! If you don't have one! Find one so you would be able to mind it." I vexed.
"Don't you dare talk to me like that Elroy! All I've ever tried to do is reunite this family whatever chance I get. We're falling apart and if no one sees that, I do-"
"Oh please! You want to stop this family from falling apart? You want to practice what you should have practiced four years ago?" I asked, crossing my limits.
Damien's jaw clenched and unclenched as he kept quiet, probably trying to refrain himself from jumping over and hitting the crap out of me.
"Elroy," Cade started but I cut him off.
"Don't even get me started on you." I glared towards him. "You know what? All of you just want to act like everything's perfect, like you all have perfect lives and I'm the only one who's the rotten egg or something? I've had enough with this stupid pretend game!"
Damien frowned. "No one's pretending Elroy! No one is trying to pick a fight or trying to make you feel like you're the only imperfect one amongst us. You feel that way because you want to feel that way! Mom and Dad wouldn't have wanted this-"
"Oh please! If they didn't want this, then why did they leave huh?" I asked.
"We can't control destiny Elroy." Grandma whispered.
"Bullshit grandma. We're all messed up in our own way."
"Elroy, why don't you just-" Damien started but I cut him off again.
"Damien stop please... Why the hell are you trying to keep this family from falling apart because you didn't have the balls to save your marriage from falling apart four years ago?!"
Damien fumed. "Don't you dare bring up my past! Who the hell do you think you are? You're the one who's trying to ruin the life of your girlfriend by any cost!"
Grandma gasped. "Why would Elroy want to do that?" She asked, looking depressed now.
Cade dropped the pudding. "Isn't it obvious grandma? They're only pretending to be happy just because they want you to think they're happy, anyone who has eyes would see that Elroy doesn't give a damn about Fay."
Sarah raised her brows in shock.
I chuckled with frustration as my hands pulled themselves into fists at the table. "So you know so much about relationships huh?" I gritted.
"I know enough to know that You and Fay and are faking your happiness because you want grandma to be happy... Come on Elroy, you can fool the public but you can't fool me."
I nodded.
"Like I said, anyone who has eyes would see that you're a selfish bastard who would do anything to get what he wants, even if it means hurting your girlfriend at the process! You don't give a single shit about Fay."
I chuckled, turning to glare at him. "All this coming from a guy who was abandoned at the Alter two years ago."
The whole table grew silent.
They knew how sour the subject was for Cade and they were all waiting for him to explode... Even me.
But all he did was look down and nod. "You're right." He said as he stood up slowly, walking out.
"Cade-" Grandma called but he didn't turn, neither did he answer, he just walked out of the mansion.
I scoffed angrily.
Suddenly, we heard the conversation from the balcony getting heated. We all turned to see what was happening, just in time to see Catherine slamming her palm against Fay's cheek.
My eyes widened in shock.
Grandma, Sarah and Rhea shot up from their dining chairs as they rushed to the backyard garden.
I watched Catherine forcefully grab Fay's phone, typing furiously on the screen. After that, she threw the phone on the ground.
Fay's hand was still on her cheek, she looked lost and dejected.
Something tugged at my insides, but I ignored it.
Damien turned to me.
"Are you happy now?" He asked as he stood up and walked out of the dinning room.
Am I?
