ELROY
Lucas had that sly look on his face, almost as if everything was in his control and I had no say. What could possibly give him that kind of thought? Did he forget who was in charge?
"But here I am." Lucas muttered. "Standing right in front of you, boss." He said, the look on his eyes was that of pure hatred. Honestly, it wasn't the first time I had seen that look on his face before. Sometimes at meetings, he'd always have his eyes on me, glaring with all his might, and when I'd look his way? He'd look away.
But now, now he was showing it, without fear.
It was almost as if I had done something really wrong to offend him, almost as if I had taken something very important from him.
It couldn't be Fay, could it?
My frown deepened. "I honestly thought you were a good guy." I found myself saying. "You played the part really well."
Lucas scoffed, placing his hand on his chest like my words offended him. "I am a good guy, Elroy. It's just that, you have something I badly want and I'm the kind of guy who gets whatever he wants."
"Fay." I simply said.
"Correct." Lucas said. "You are not good for her, and you know it."
I furrowed my brows. What the hell is up with this guy? "I'm not good for her?"
"Of course. You're emotionally unstable. You hurt her without knowing it." He took a step closer. "Listen here Elroy, Fay Henderson means more than you can ever imagine, to me. She's like my oxygen. The only reason why I wake up to see the next day."
Okay? "That's my girlfriend you're talking about, Lucas." My tone thickened.
"I know that. But then again, she wasn't supposed to be your girlfriend. Did you have any idea about the kind of relationship we had together before you had to insert your goddam fingers into it." He snarled. "Why do you always have to take everything that-" He stopped himself immediately, then smiled.
Like an obsessed maniac.
"She's with you, I know that- everyone knows that. But what they don't know is that you treat her like crap."
"I don't."
"Of course you do. But I honestly don't mind, because you're helping me finish the job, because she thinks highly of me than her own boyfriend and no matter what, she comes running back to me for comfort. I see a future with her, it's very bright and very clear."
I fumed, feeling the rise of my temper from each words falling from his lips.
"Oh, I can make it blurry with just a snap of my finger. You're fired." I snapped at him.
He gave a small laugh at first, then gradually, he started laughing, full time, holding his stomach. "You're funny Elroy. You can't fire me." He said, sounding so sure of himself.
"Excuse me?" I asked.
He shook his head at me, pitifully. "How do you think Fay would react to the news?" He asked. "I mean, there has to be a concrete reason why you're firing me. What would you tell her?"
"I don't care about what Fay thinks. I make my decisions without a second thought." I replied.
"That's the difference between the both of us. I care about what Fay thinks. And for that reason, she'd always prefer me to you. I have no worries now cause I'm one step away from getting her." Lucas smirked.
This conversation wasn't going the way it was supposed to.
"Then again, I'm pretty good at my job." Lucas added.
"I'm pretty sure there are thousands of photographers ready to swap places with you."
Why am I even arguing with this asshole. "You're fired Lucas, I want you to pack your stuff and get the fuck out of my company. I don't care what Fay thinks about it, and even if she asks, I'd tell her that I just felt like it, or I'd tell her that her sweet friend Lucas, is a conniving cheap bastard."
"Ouch." Lucas smiled. "Harsh. But I'm not going anywhere, and you know why? It's because I have leverage."
"Leverage. What leverage?"
"Well... Let's just say I know more about you than you think, and maybe, just maybe I have the power to sell out a big Chesterfield secret to the press, I'm pretty sure they'd love to hear what you and your brothers have been keeping from them."
What the hell is he talking about?
"I know, if I were in your shoes, I'd be pissed. But- I'm not."
"What do you know?" I asked him.
He smirked. "I know the reason behind your parents 'car accident' I know you were with them that night, and I also know that you are responsible for whatever happened to them that night. Let's not forget about the little boy-"
"Shut up." I stopped him, feeling my heart pick up pace. "How the hell did you- who told you all this?"
He shrugged. "It doesn't matter who told me. All that matters is that I have the upper hand."
I furrowed my brows in confusion.
"If you fire me, I will not hesitate to ruin your life, Elroy Chesterfield." He said, spitting hate with his stares.
It wasn't just my life he'd ruin, but that of everyone with my last name. I raked my hands through my hair in frustration.
"And you know what? Fay Henderson is as gullible as the word gullible. It's only a matter of time before you lose your temper over her friendship with me. And she comes running back to me as always."
Who could have told him all this? About the accident, about the fact that I was with them or even- even about the little- little- boy. It can't get to the press. We'd be ruined. Everything would be ruined.
It had been banished from my thoughts, the poor kid who got in the way- no one- not even Karen knew about it. Not even Yvonne.
"Out of all the things you've stolen from me, Elroy Chesterfield. Out of everything I let you steal, I won't let Fay go too. I won't let you take her away from me too. Over my dead body. I'll pull her back to me no matter what you do. And you know the best part of all this? It's that Fay Henderson would always choose me over you. It's only a matter of time before it becomes permanent."
"What are you talking about? What have I ever stolen from you?"
"That's for you to figure out. And as for this job? It belongs to me, and the day it stops being mine, would be the end of the Chesterfield name." He seethed."By the look on your face, I can tell that you understand the kind of leverage I have over you." He said.
"How do you know all this?" I was short of words, all I could do was ask questions that I knew I wasn't going to get answers to.
"Like I said, that doesn't matter. I've kept quiet for too long, I'm done being the good guy. But don't worry, I'm not asking you to break up with her- no... That would just hurt my poor Fay, and it will make things easier for you. I want to watch her leave you, I want to watch you beg for her while she crawls her way into my arms. Then I'd feel mentally and emotionally sated." He smirked. "But for now, see you tomorrow, Boss." He saluted, walking out of the office.
I stood there, dumbfounded.
There had to be something more to that look of hatred, that tone of loathe. Something bigger than his need for Fay. But what could I have possibly done to him?
