                    ELROY
"How do you plan to open the program? You know it has to be grand and eye catching. Last year we went with the fireworks illusion, I don't think people would want to see that again, Mr. Chesterfield." Mr. Chang, the Chinese organizing agent for the pre merge program was speaking; I was listening to him but, I wasn't paying attention. My mind wasn't in this meeting, no. It was on Fay Henderson.
Honestly, I'd never understand the kind of blind faith she had in Lucas.
I knew she had no idea of his true intentions but- why couldn't she see that he was just playing victim in all of this? He was taking advantage of her.
Even still, she should know better than to go to his house. I mean, is that even right? You have a boyfriend, but still you feel comfortable having breakfast in another man's house?
I mean, how does she think I'd feel about it? Didn't she care about my feelings?
Why would she care? You've done nothing but to make her life miserable for the past three years.
But I was changing, wasn't I? Couldn't she just- just stay away from him? For me?
You've not gotten to that stage in her life, Elroy.
So Lucas has? That bastard only wants her for himself.
"Mr. Chesterfield?"
I looked up at him immediately. "Yes?"
"I asked you a question." He said.
"Oh, I'm sorry. You were saying something about the opening of the program?"
"Yes, Mr. Chesterfield. Do you have any ideas?"
I sat up, trying to shake the thought of Fay from my head. I shouldn't let this bother me.
"Okay, I have a few ideas for this year's opening. Since we went with the fire theme for the last one, I was thinking we should do the complete opposite of-"
The door to my office pushed open with an average amount of force, cutting me off.
A frown was etched to my brows immediately Fay came in, looking equally pissed.
"We need to talk." She snapped at me.
I was confused. Couldn't she see I had a visitor? Did Carter leave his seat again?
The Chinese organizer had a confused look on his face, as his eyes moved from Fay then back to me.
I was getting annoyed by this but I decided to just calm myself, for now.
"Fay-"
"Now!" She yelled a little, cutting me off.
What the hell is her problem?
I clenched my Jaw, refraining myself from glaring at her as I shifted my eyes to the organizer's. "I'm so sorry, Mr. Chang. Can we do this some other time, I'll come by your office to finish up the planning."
He looked offended, but he tried not to show it. "Alright." He said, grabbing his phone and file from my table before rising to his feet.
I rose too, placing an apologetic look on my face. "I'm really sorry." I said to him.
He gave a curt nod off acknowledgement before walking out of my office, shutting the door behind him.
Carter came in immediately. "I'm sorry Elroy, I tried to stop her but she-"
"It's fine, Carter, get back to work."
Carter shot a quick look at Fay then back at me before making his way out, shutting the door gently behind him.
Now we were left alone.
Two reasons, I could think of two reasons why she did what she did. One, maybe it was because she found out I lied about purple being the best color to go with her outfit. Two, Lucas.
The office was silent as I waited for her to speak.
She threw her bag on the couch at a corner in my office, walking closer to me until we were just two feet apart.
"I don't appreciate you barging into my office like that, knowing fully well that I had a very important visitor. Not only did you barge into my office, you yelled at me, rudely in front of a popular organizer. Do you know how careless that was?" I said, calmly.
The last thing I wanted right now was another fight with her, just when everything was going fine.
"Careless? You want to talk about careless, Elroy?" She voiced out angrily. "Why don't we talk about the fact that you thought it was okay to threaten Lucas."
Okay, it's reason number two. I sighed. "What are you talking about?" I asked him.
She scoffed. "Don't even dare pretend you don't know what I'm talking about, El."
"Well, that's the thing. I don't know what you're talking about." I said in confusion.
"Well allow me to refresh your memory. You threatened Lucas you were going to stop him from working with you, and you know what? that is even explainable because you have every right to fire him, it's your company. But you going extra mile by threatening to tarnish his image so no one would hire him, was so uncalled for. And to top it all Elroy, you threatened to throw him and his family out of their home. I mean, how could you stoop so low?"
Speechless, I was completely, totally and utterly speechless.
"You're not going to say anything about it? Huh? Let me guess, you don't feel like your actions were wrong, right?"
I found my voice again. "I have absolutely no idea on what you're talking about right now-"
"Don't bullshit me please. How can you even lie about something like this?"
"Fay-"
"Why would you even do such a thing? Threaten to render him homeless? Homeless Elroy? For what? Because you think he's trying to have his way with me? Does that even make sense to you?"
I blinked. "I honestly can't believe you believed him." I said in astonishment. "I never threatened him. He's lying."
She gasp in disbelief. "Why are you even denying it?"
"Fay, listen to me. Lucas is lying to you, okay? Why would I threaten to render him homeless. Why would I stoop so low? Why would you even believe him Fay, you know me better than that-"
"I don't know you El. I thought I did, but now I'm not so sure anymore." She muttered.
"I never said anything like that to him, okay... He just wants to create problems between us. Can't you see that?"
She raked her hands through hair, giving a small laugh without humor. "You're unbelievable Elroy, so unbelievable. Do you expect me to believe you? Lucas is the same guy who asked me not to confront you because he didn't want us to argue. Now you're telling me that he's deliberately trying to cause problems between us? Just because you don't want to own up to your own mistakes?"
Oh God. Please bestow me with the spirit of patience.
"Lucas is not who you think He is, Fay. Can't you see he's trying to cause problems between us? It's because of him we're having this discussion right now. Our last fight was also because of him, you can't-"
"Stop trying to blame Lucas for your insolent behavior." She said.
"My insolent behavior? Really?"
"Yes Elroy, your insolent behavior. You threatened to throw him out in the streets for crying out loud. Who does that?"
That's right? Who does that?
Lucas had his claws deep inside Fay's head, she trusted him more. Nothing I say right now would change her opinion of me.
"Lucas hasn't done anything wrong, what you did was so unfair, he's just a friend to me, Elroy. A friend. Nothing more. I don't see the point in making this a big deal, he's the kindest person ever, and truth be told, he's one of the reasons why I'm still with you."
Patience.
"Listen Fay, I know you don't trust me as much as you trust Lucas. But for once your life, I want you to trust me on this- Lucas isn't-"
"I don't want to listen to this anymore. You're denying everything and it's annoying the hell out of me. You need to start owning up to your mistakes. Stop trying to make me hate him."
"I'm not trying to make you hate him Fay, I'm trying to make you see that-"
"That's enough. You know, I should have listened to Lucas when he told me not to confront you, you'll only deny everything. I didn't expect this from you El."
"Why don't you just listen to me. Why are you trying to create unnecessary problems for us?"
She frowned. "I am trying to create unnecessary problems?"
"Yes Fay, if anything, I should be the one mad at you. You interrupted a very important meeting just because you wanted to play hero for Lucas. A guy who doesn't even deserve it."
"He deserves it, El... Lucas has been a friend to me even before I met you, I would take his words over yours anytime any day."
"Excuse me?" I asked, already loosing control of my patience.
"You heard me. Come to think of it, you haven't exactly done anything to make me trust you. I don't trust you Elroy, I don't. And the fact that you're denying everything right now is just making matters worse."
I groaned. "What do you want from me Fay, should I agree to something that I didn't even do? What the hell do you want me to do?"
"Own up to your mistakes and apologize to Lucas." She said.
"You want me to what?" I frowned.
"Apologize to Lucas."
"For what?" I asked indignantly.
"Well firstly, for accusing him of something he's obviously not doing and for your pathetic attempt to pull him away from me." She said, crossing her arms over her chest.
"But I didn't do anything, Fay."
"Oh, you never do anything." She snapped at me.
I just stared at her, trying my best to keep calm but it wasn't happening, I wasn't calm.
"Fay-"
"I should have known nothing would have come out of this." She said, sounding defeated.
"I don't know what to do to please you anymore, I've been trying my best to make this relationship work, Fay, but every damn time you make me want to just end this shit."
"Oh, really?" Her voice broke.
"Yes Fay, you frustrate the crap out of me, there's nothing I do that is acceptable in your eyes. I admit it, I was bad to you, but now I'm trying my best to make things right but all you do is try to frustrate and annoy me any chance you get. Like I wonder why I'm putting efforts into something that is obviously not working." I blurted out in anger.
Her eyes widened. "Then go ahead! End it! What the hell are you waiting for?" Tears built up at the brim of her eyes as she rushed to grab her bag, hurriedly making her way towards the door.
Damn it! Why does she have to be so dramatic?
"Fay," I rushed to stand in front of her, blocking her way.
"Get out of my way." She muttered with shaky voice.
"Fay, I'm sorry, okay. I didn't mean to say that, I was just angry."
She looked away from me.
"Fay, come on... I'm sorry. You know me better than anyone else. When I get angry, I say things I don't mean." I sighed when she kept her eyes away from me.
I needed another approach to this. This was what Lucas wanted. Why didn't I think of this? In other to beat Lucas at his game, I'd have to think like him.
I just needed to sort things out with Fay first, after that? I'd have to deal with him.
"Okay Fay, I lied." I said after sometime.
She looked up at me in surprise.
"I admit now that I was an asshole for threatening Lucas. You were right, that was very low of me. But I was only jealous. I don't even know what came over me that day."
"So why did you deny it earlier?" She asked.
I sighed, thinking of another lie. "Well, because- because I didn't want you to hate me for it. I'm sorry for lying to you."
She visibly relaxed. "Why did you even do it in the first place? Why don't you just see him for who he really is?"
That's the point Fay? I've seen him for who he really is but there's not a damn way to convince you.
"I'll apologize to him, I promise. I just don't want us to argue, please." I begged.
I swear Lucas, you'll pay for this.
She sighed.
"It's okay. I'm sorry too, for interrupting your meeting. That was rude."
"I would have done the same thing, but I don't have friends so." I shrugged.
"Well, you need to get a boyfriend." A small smile grazed her lips.
"Using my own words against me, eh?" I returned the smile.
She shrugged playfully, then gave me a sad smile. "I overreacted. I'm sorry, El. It's just that, Lucas is a really good friend of mine. And you know me-"
"You're too gullible." I blurted out.
"What?" She asked.
"Oh, I meant, you're too kind. And please remind me not to get on your bad side, you're overdramatic."
"I'm not... You're just so annoying at times."
I smiled fully at her, "That's the best part of me... And you can't deny the fact that you're attracted to that side."
"I'm not." She said, stubbornly.
"Fine, if you think so. But- Are we good now? No hard feelings?"
She tilted her head to a corner. "None."
That was actually easy.
"Great, then." I said pulling her to my body by her waist.
She gasped in surprise. "What are you-"
I kissed her softly, cutting her short of her words.
It was a small kiss but it spoke a thousand words.
I pulled away softly to find her staring up at me, surprised.
"What?" I asked, smiling.
"That was random. I liked it." She said with a shy smile.
I scoffed. "You confuse me. Sometimes you act all tough and bold but some other times you act all innocent."
She grinned. "Call it a personality switch?"
I gave a side smile. "I'm glad we're okay, honestly. I don't regret changing, Fay. It's turned out to be the best thing."
"Yeah, I'm glad too." She smiled, placing her head against my chest as she wrapped her arms around me.
Lucas, if this was your way of creating problems for Fay and I? Well... You've failed, you don't know who you're messing with... You think you can manipulate Fay into leaving me... Well, let's just see who wins at this game.
