FAY
"I never thought I'd hear from you again, Fay." Was my mother's first sentence to me as I sat on the dark blue warm couch in her sitting room.
She had a face mask on as she relaxed on her customized relaxing chair. She had two slices of cucumber covering her eyes.
"I'm sorry for not coming earlier, a lot of things happened after the brunch, and besides, I wanted you to cool off-"
"Is that an excuse? Even a call would have sufficed." She said, as her lips formed a thin line.
I rolled my eyes.
"I'm not trying to make excuses Mom. Listen, I was only mad, I mean, you had to go extra mile to slap me in front of the Chesterfields, that's not fair."
"And you insulting me indirectly was?" She asked, her voice hard.
"I'm sorry about that. I was out of control." I said.
"It doesn't matter now, does it? You still have a contract with her." She said with distaste. "The minute Elroy asked me to reopen the contract, I knew you'd done something to change his mind."
"I didn't do anything, Mom. He realized how unfair it was, and besides Mom, there's more to the story, so... Let's just leave it at that."
"Hm." She said.
"Where's Sarah?" I asked.
"Not here, she's visiting her parents."
"Oh. How have you been?"
"Fine." She said, taking off the cucumbers from her eyes.
She sat up, and finally, her eyes met mine, she scanned my outfit from head to toe. "What are you wearing?" She asked in amusement.
I looked down at my cream sweater and purple scarf. "Casual, why?" I asked carefully.
She looked at me funny. "Let's just hope you aren't mentioned in the next episode of fashion police."
I furrowed my brows in confusion. "Why? Wh-whats wrong with what I'm wearing."
She scoffed. "Anyone who has eyes would know that a blue scarf would have gone better with your cream sweater and blue jeans. Purple is just off." She said.
"But El..." I trailed off. Gritting my teeth in anger.
That annoying man! He made me wear the wrong color. He's going to get an earful from me.
"Anyways, we all make mistakes don't we? Do you need anything to drink? I'll ask Ben to fix up something for you." She said.
"It's fine." I muttered. "I'm in no mood for drinks." I said.
"Your wish. How is Elroy by the way? I heard about the attack." She said.
My eyes widened. "What? Who told you?"
"Melissa. And please don't look at me like that. She made me swear not to tell anyone. Something about Elroy's peace of mind. I also wouldn't want to get on his bad side. Even Sarah doesn't know about it."
I sighed in relief, relaxing back on the couch. "I was so scared Mom, I thought something bad would happen to him."
"Nothing bad happened right? But I just wonder, when did he become asthmatic? I went ahead to reread his biography online again, but there was nothing about him being asthmatic. Don't you think it's strange? No one except us knows about it... Why do you think they're keeping it secret?"
I shrugged. "I don't know, but they must have their reasons."
"Maybe you should ask Elroy." My Mom suggested.
I shook my head. "I see no need for it, Mom... And besides, things are more than okay between us, I don't want to annoy him with my questions."
"You're not annoying him, Fay. You just want to know more about him... The way things are going, the both of you might end up getting married, he has to tell you these things."
My eyes widened. "Marriage? Please Mom, don't think about that."
"Why not? You two have been in this relationship for over three years now, isn't the wait enough? The public wants to see Elroy put a ring on your finger. And I'd be glad to plan the wedding, it'll be so grand, so grand that it'd be talked about till the end of time-"
"Mom," I stopped her. "No one's planning any wedding... Elroy and I just haven't gotten there yet."
"That's not what the public thinks my dear. You both have been the trending couple for a long time now... And I have gotten more fame too." She smiled.
It's all about the fame to her.
"You know I just hit three million followers on Instagram, right?"
"I'm aware Mom." I said, sounding uninterested.
"And you also know that I'm staring in that new series, Battle line? My account just got verified" She said, sounding so proud of herself.
"I'm also aware of that too Mom."
"Great, so imagine the extra fame I'd have if I get to plan your wedding? It'd be double of the kind I gain after planning each merge program."
I sighed. "Mom, I don't think Elroy is ready for marriage, I'm also not ready so - just remove that thought from your head okay?"
"Do you want me to talk to him? You know he always listens to me." She said.
There's no stopping her, is there?
"Mom-"
"I'll call him first thing tomorrow morning."
I sighed, "Mom, that won't be necessary."
"My mind has been made up." She smiled, getting up from her relaxation chair. "Oh, are you spending the night here? It's pretty late to go out now." She said.
"Yeah, yeah... I'll just text Elroy that I'd be here till the next morning."
"Hope he wouldn't mind?" She asked.
"No, I don't think so." I said, unsure of my own reply.
"Great, I'll just go wash this off my face, then we can watch the first three episodes of Battle line together. You're going to scream when you see how hot your mother is."
I gave her a small smile as she went up the stairs.
I liked my Mom when she was like this, less controlling and more comfortable to be with.
I sighed, taking out my phone from my purse, sending a text to Elroy.
Me:
So, I just realized that I'm in no mood to sleep in the same bed with my boyfriend who thought it was funny to make his girlfriend dress like a clown the whole day. I'll be spending the night at my Mom's. Good night.
Just now.
I dropped my phone beside me, knowing full well that he wasn't going to text back. He didn't fair too well with texting, it was really rare to get texts from Elroy. He only texted whenever he didn't want to talk.
But when my phone blessed me with a notification sound, I picked it up, with a frown of confusion etched to my brows.
He texted back.
❤️Elroy❤️
Ok. Night.
First of all, yes... The love emoji was in front and at the end of his name. It was just to be on the safer side, in case I dropped my phone somewhere and then he calls and someone sees that- why am I even trying to explain this to myself?
Now... Secondly, what does ok. Night. Mean? Did he even read my text? My text contained 44 words... And he thought it was okay to reply with just two words? Was he in a bad mood or something?
Does that even matter, couldn't he like, apologize for making me dress like a clown, couldn't he at least act like he did care about me being away from the house?
I activated my keyboard, typing furiously.
Me:
Seriously? That's all you have to say? No questions about why I'm spending the night at my Mom's house? Or better still, you could have just told me to have a really sweet dream... All you could manage to write was. OK. NIGHT? What does that even mean?
3 min.
Me:
Remind me never to text you again! You're so annoying!
2 min.
Me:
I might even consider spending a week at my mom's place, because I don't even want to see your face. I might just punch you.
1 min.
Me:
Just so you know, I'm mad at you for this, and don't even think for a second that I'd forgive you easily.
For the last time... Good. Night.
Just now.
I dropped my phone beside me. He's just so annoying, I wonder how I manage to deal with him... Argh!
The notification sound on my phone, sent my heart flying.
❤️Elroy❤️
Wow... You need to chill, I can feel your cuteness radiating all over your words. It's busy messing with my heart so please tone it down.
Just now.
My jaw dropped due to my sudden unsteady heart. Did he seriously just text that? Why did his text melt my heart?
❤️Elroy❤️
Speechless? Well that's exactly how your cuteness had me, not too long ago.
Just now.
I gulped.
Me:
Are you drunk texting me?
Just now.
Immediately, he replied.
❤️Elroy❤️
No babe.
Babe?
Me:
Babe? Since when do you call me babe?
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
Since now... Don't you like it?
Just now.
I blushed. He wasn't even here.
Me:
Whatever, I know you're doing all this to make me forget about your first reply, but trust me... It's not working.
1 min.
It was working, it was more than working. I bit my lower lip to stop myself from smiling so hard.
❤️Elroy❤️
I was only teasing you, and you fell for it, I knew you would complain if I sent 'that' as my reply. Plus... I wouldn't want to pass out a chance to annoy you.:-)
2 min.
I shook my head, Smiling my heart out as I reread the text message.
Me:
So, what was supposed to be your real reply?
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
Well, firstly, I'm glad you sorted things out with your Mom, and I think it's a good idea to spend sometime with her.
Just now.
So he was literally telling me that he wouldn't miss me. He probably wanted me out of the house before.
❤️Elroy❤️
I'll go hang out with the guys, too. I honestly don't want to sleep alone... And honestly, I was looking forward to snuggling up with you tonight, but since you want to stay with your Mom, it's fine... I'm disappointed but it's fine, we have so many nights ahead of us, I believe we can both spare this one for family.
1 min.
❤️Elroy❤️
How I wish I knew then what I know now. I wouldn't have wasted the other nights sleeping miles and miles away from you.
1 min.
❤️Elroy❤️
I'll miss you.
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
And about the scarf? Don't be mad, it's just that your skin accepts all colors, so I got confused a little bit... But you can't blame me, you're pretty with everything you wear, and trust me, by tomorrow, everyone would start pairing purple with odd colors just because it looked perfect on you.
Just now.
My heart was melting. I suddenly had the insane urge to be in his arms too. These were just words, but they had a strong effect on my heart.
I sighed, not knowing what to reply him.
My heart was giving this unsteady thump.
Before the brunch, if anyone had told me that Elroy Chesterfield would be capable of making me feel this way, I'd have laughed at their face.
I liked the way he made me feel. The feeling was dangerous, but it felt amazing. I liked everything about him. His smile, his laugh, his frown, his rarely seen smile, his fake smile, his eyes, his lips, his features, his annoyed look, the look he made whenever he was irritated by something I do, his confused look, his hair, his eye lashes.
❤️Elroy❤️
Are you still breathing?
Just now.
I like him. A lot.
Me:
You really were a player in college, weren't you?
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
The best of my kind... But that was then... I really do mean everything. I'll miss you... This is coming from the dept of my heart so... Hold it tight.
1 min.
I smiled.
I liked Elroy Chesterfield... A whole bunch of lots.
I gave a dreamy sigh.
I won't screw this up... I'll make this work... I'll make us work...
I've gotten so used to him, and honestly, trying to picture the rest of my life without his presence was something I couldn't do... If I tried it, I was quite certain he'd find his way into the picture, one way or another.
I'll have to tell him.
What are you even saying, Fay? He's your boyfriend... You both are dating... Do you need to tell him you like him before he knows you like him?
We're not together because we like each other, we're together because his grandma likes us together.
But now you like him... That's a big step for you Fay.
I sighed.
Maybe I should just keep it all to myself first, then, wait... Till the right time, when I'm absolutely sure about my feelings.
Argh!
My phone beeped. I hurriedly checked his text.
❤️Elroy❤️
Still there???
Just now.
Oh crap.
Me:
Yeah...
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
Did I say something wrong?
Just now.
What?
Me:
No, not at all... You said everything right.
1 min.
That's the problem!
Me:
I'll miss you too, El. Are you spending the night out?
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
I don't know yet... I'll let you know when I decide. Send my greetings to Catherine.
Just now.
Me:
Okay, have fun with the guys. And please, don't make trouble with Cade.
Just now.
❤️Elroy❤️
I'll try not to. Text you later, Kay?
Just now.
I sighed.
Me:
Mkay.
1 min.
Mom took that moment to come into the sitting room.
"I'll get the popcorn ready."
"Ok, Mom... I'll just get refreshed and join you soon."
She smiled as I stood up.
"Don't take too long." She said, making her way to the kitchen.
I mumbled an 'I won't.'
This was going to be a long night...
