Because of the injury, Charlotte and Preston's wedding got postponed.
The Pierce family offered to call off the engagement, but Preston publicly declared: "Even if Charlotte never walks again, I'll still marry her."
Suddenly everyone in their social circle was jealous of Charlotte's luck.
Disabled and still getting true love from the Fitzgerald heir.
But nobody knew Preston was two-faced—in private, he was arrogant as hell and constantly mocking her.
"Since you're a cripple now, just keep your mouth shut. Once you're in the Fitzgerald house, you'll sit there like a pretty decoration. You don't leave without my say-so."
Charlotte gave him a cold look and said nothing.
Seeing her all deflated, Preston clicked his tongue. "Boring." Then he left.
During this time, Adrian came to visit once but Charlotte refused to see him.
He stood outside her hospital room, hesitating for ages, then finally left.
As for the apology note and check he had someone deliver, Charlotte tore them up and threw them in the trash.
She didn't want anything to do with Adrian anymore.
But news about him still found its way to her ears.
She heard his tech company had gone public, and her father was so thrilled he moved up Adrian and Jessica's wedding to this month.
She also heard Adrian was always at Jessica's place now—he'd cook, she'd mix drinks, the perfect little couple.
Today, Adrian came to the Pierce mansion again.
From the study, she could hear bits of their conversation.
"Jessica, you've had that bike for three years. It's always been reliable—how did the brakes just fail like that?"
"Are you accusing me of something?"
"I just want an explanation that makes sense."
The air went dead quiet.
Suddenly, Jessica let out a bitter laugh. "Fine, yeah, I sabotaged it. I was sick of watching her moon over you like some pathetic schoolgirl! She was marrying Preston but still playing the heartbroken victim? She deserved it!"
Out on the balcony, Charlotte's hands went white-knuckled on her wheelchair.
The freezing fall wind cut right through her.
Adrian had always been Mr. Perfect—zero tolerance for any BS. The second he caught her in anything sketchy, he'd written her off completely.
With Jessica, it should be the same deal. At minimum, he should rip into her.
But all she heard was crushing silence.
Inside the study, the tension was thick.
Jessica realized she'd said too much and quickly softened her voice. "Adrian, I just lost my head for a second. Jealousy made me do something stupid."
"I know I messed up. I'll get Charlotte the best medical team to fix her legs."
Adrian was quiet for a few seconds, then said flatly, "Don't do it again."
Those four words hit Charlotte like a punch to the gut.
Smashing her heart to pieces.
Jessica, seeing her opening, quickly said she'd go grab some new coffee beans for him to try.
Adrian sighed and walked out of the study, running straight into a pair of ice-cold eyes.
He stopped dead, looking uncomfortable. "You... heard everything?"
Charlotte didn't say a word, just stared at him like he was a total stranger.
That look stung.
Guilt flashed across his face. Then he pulled a Patek Philippe from his jacket pocket and held it out.
"I'm getting married soon. You should have this back."
Charlotte stared at the watch without moving.
After a long wait—so long that Adrian's outstretched hand started going stiff—Charlotte finally raised her arm.
"From now on, Charlotte Pierce and Adrian Blackwell have nothing to do with each other."
Her hoarse voice fell like a final judgment as she looked him straight in the eye and hurled the watch at the ground.
CRASH!
The sound slammed into Adrian's chest, making him flinch.
After a long silence, he finally whispered, "I'm sorry."
The electric wheelchair hummed as Charlotte rolled back to her room.
She sat there from afternoon until sunset, when the warm bedside lamp automatically turned on.
It cast broken shadows across her pale face.
Now there was no chance with Adrian, and with her ruined legs, she couldn't go anywhere.
Marrying Preston was inevitable.
But instead of getting tortured to death again like some pathetic victim, she'd rather go out with a bang.
When she looked up again, Charlotte's eyes held nothing but cold determination.
