"Skylar, your sister's engaged already. Stop trying to mess things up between them. We got your plane tickets. You're staying overseas for a few years, and you can come back after your sister ties the knot."
Looking at my parents with their "we know what's best" faces, it hit me—I'd been given a do-over.
I was back at square one. The exact day my parents forced me out of the country to forget about Nate for good.
Last time around, they pushed me to leave just like this. But I couldn't accept it.
I kept telling Nate he was supposed to be with me, not my sister.
I begged my parents to come clean and stop my sister from taking my place. All I got was Nate hating my guts even more.
After my car wreck, when I was barely hanging on, he told the nurse on the phone: "What's her game this time? Tell her to back off and stop trying to wreck my wedding with Iris."
Yet I flatlined on that operating table, eyes glued to the TV showing their big fancy wedding broadcast. Watched him slip that ring on Iris's finger, watched everyone fawning all over them...
Since life handed me a second chance, I wasn't going to be such a desperate fool again.
"Fine, I'll go." I grabbed the tickets, my voice scary calm.
My parents looked shocked at how easily I'd given in.
"Skylar, you're really leaving? You're not cooking up some plan to wreck your sister's relationship, are you?!"
Wreck?
What a joke. Nate was mine from the start.
Until my parents yanked him away and handed him to my sister on a silver platter.
Twenty-some years ago, my sister Iris got diagnosed with leukemia. My parents didn't think twice about having another kid, and boom—I showed up.
My cord blood saved Iris's life, but I've been stuck in her shadow ever since.
Since Iris was always sick and fragile, my parents poured all their love her way.
Growing up, I gave up everything for her—my bedroom, my friends, my spot in competitions...
The only thing I wouldn't give up was the guy I fell hard for—Nate, heir to his family's fortune.
He used to be this untouchable golden boy until a car crash on his birthday left him blind. His family dumped him in some villa out in the middle of nowhere.
I swiped the key without telling anyone and hopped the fence after school every day to hang out with him.
"I'll come back every day."
In all that darkness, my voice became the only thing keeping Nate going.
I never told him my name, just traced into his palm: "Call me Seven."
He'd feel around to brush my hair, play piano for me, and press my freezing hands against his chest during thunderstorms.
The night before his surgery, he kissed my fingertips and made me a promise: "When I can see again, I want you to be the first person I look at. Then we can be together, okay?"
That surgery lasted twelve hours.
But when Nate woke up, the first face he saw was Iris's.
My parents found out Iris had the hots for Nate, so they slipped me sleeping pills, knocking me out for a whole day and night.
Then they fed him this lie that Iris had been the one by his side all along, letting her step right into my shoes.
Nate never questioned a thing. He fell for Iris and got engaged, totally head over heels.
For three years, I tried to explain a million times that I was the one who'd been there, that I was the one he should love. He never bought it.
Not until I was dead and gone.
Looking at my so-called parents now, I had to laugh. "You've been dying to get rid of me forever, and now that I'm actually going, you don't believe me? Isn't that messed up?"
"That's not what we meant. We're glad you're leaving. Your flight to Europe's in two weeks. You can pack and wrap things up until then."
Scared I'd change my mind, my parents rushed through a few more warnings before practically skipping out the door.
I went back to my room and shut the door.
My phone buzzed right away.
Message from Nate.
[Tonight, 8 PM. Grand Hyatt, room 1808.]
I stared at the text, my grip tightening.
Last time around, I was over the moon when I got this, thinking he'd finally hear me out. Instead, I walked in on him deliberately having sex with Iris to crush my spirits.
I'd broken down crying while he just said, "Get it now? I only want your sister."
Looking back, I was such a pathetic mess.
I took a deep breath and typed back: [OK.]
At 8 sharp, I showed up at the hotel.
The door to 1808 was cracked open. Nate was all over Iris, both of them naked.
Used condoms everywhere, the whole room reeking of sex.
When Iris spotted me in the doorway, she let out this little scream.
Nate kept kissing her neck, his voice all soft and deep.
"Don't worry. I invited her on purpose. I want her to see you're the only one for me, so she'll drop this crush and accept I'm just her brother-in-law."
Even seeing this scene a second time felt like someone twisting a knife in my chest, raw and unbearable.
But I had to get used to it!
Because from now on, Nate would only ever be my sister's husband.
I don't know how long I stood there. Finally, I unclenched my hands, nail marks deep in my palms, and saw Nate fully dressed, walking up to me.
"Get it now? I only love your sister. Know your place. I'm your brother-in-law, so cut the desperate act!"
My face was completely blank.
"Yeah, I get it. Crystal clear."
Nate looked surprised, like he hadn't expected me to take it so calmly.
After a second, he grabbed an invitation from the nightstand and shoved it at me. "Iris and I are getting married next month. Hope you can make it."
I took the card. "I'll be there. Congrats on your happily ever after."
Nate stared at my face, frowning.
Something about my easy surrender seemed to throw him off.
He didn't say anything else, just took Iris's hand and walked out. I dragged myself after them, feet like lead.
Head down, lost in my own thoughts, I barely registered the screaming nearby.
Then a massive light fixture came crashing down from the ceiling.
Nate yanked Iris backward in one smooth motion, both of them dodging it completely.
I stood frozen, crushed under the weight, blood pooling around me on the floor.
Pain crashed over me in waves, ripping through my nerves, making me shake in my own blood.
Tears flooded my eyes as everything blurred. I watched him holding Iris protectively as my eyes drifted shut.
The boy who once only had eyes for me was gone forever.
And finally, I could actually let go.
