I woke up in a hospital room.
A nurse was changing my bandages. She looked relieved when my eyes opened.
"You've been out cold for two days. Finally back with us, huh? How you feeling? Your sister fainted from shock when she brought you in. Your parents and brother-in-law are next door taking care of her. Want me to grab them?"
My eyelashes fluttered as I shook my head.
"Don't bother. They don't want to see me, and I'm not exactly dying to see them either."
The nurse shot me this pitying look before heading out.
"Can you believe that family? Sisters, and the younger one nearly bled out in the ICU, but her people don't even ask about her. Too busy fussing over the sister who just got scared. Haven't checked on her once in two days."
"I heard her brother-in-law runs Sullivan Enterprises. Sister married rich, so naturally they forget about the spare. But damn, that guy is whipped. Hasn't left her sister's side, feeds her meds and food himself, even flew in some retired shrink for her trauma. The gifts keep flowing into that room like there's no tomorrow..."
Their whispered gossip hit my ears loud and clear.
I kept my poker face on.
This kind of treatment? Old news.
That afternoon, the doctor wanted me for a follow-up. No one around to help, so I had to haul my weak ass out of bed alone.
Walking past the next room, I caught sight of my parents and Nate hovering around Iris like she might break.
Dad tucking her blanket, Mom peeling grapes and popping them in her mouth.
Iris had this sugary smile plastered on, her voice sticky-sweet.
"Dad, Mom, you've been babysitting me for days without checking on my sister. I'm stuffed now, why don't you take this leftover fish soup to her? Her injuries are pretty bad, she needs to rebuild her strength."
"Don't sweat it. That girl's like a cockroach, survives anything. Your mother slaved over this soup all night—giving it to her would be throwing it away."
Dad shut that down instantly, and Mom nodded right along.
Nate was fixing Iris's hair, looking at her like she hung the moon.
"Babe, the doc said you passed out from stress. Skylar's always been an ice queen. Never gave a damn about your sisterly bond. She even tried to steal your man. Why waste your energy?"
Hearing his cold take, I couldn't help but crack a bitter smile.
I was born allergic to seafood—can't touch the stuff. But Iris loves fish, shrimp, crab—you name it—so our family meals were always seafood central.
I couldn't eat any of it, living on plain rice and veggies, only to have my parents call me picky.
In public, Iris acts like the world's most caring big sister. The second we're alone, she turns into a total bitch, verbally and physically.
Then she'd run crying to our parents claiming I hurt her, flipping the whole script.
Mom and Dad would punish me without even asking what happened. Once made me kneel in pouring rain all night.
After that, I steered clear of my sister, handed over anything she wanted.
In my past life, Nate was the only thing I refused to give up.
And we all know how that played out.
This time around, I just wanted to live my life. No fighting, no grabbing, no loving anyone.
I finished my check-up solo and headed to the pharmacy with my prescription.
It was in another building across a garden.
Passing the fountain, someone stepped in my way. I looked up to see Iris blocking my path.
"Well, look who's up and walking. Guess you weren't that messed up after all. Let me spell it out—Mom and Dad are Team Iris. Even if you tell Nate you were his blind buddy, that you're his true soulmate or whatever, it won't change a damn thing. Save your breath!"
Faced with her trash talk, I kept it flat.
"Chill. From now on, I'm over Nate. Whatever you want, it's yours."
Iris was used to me rolling over, which just fed her ego.
"'Whatever I want?' Like I need your permission? I've gotten everything I wanted since we were in diapers. You only get my scraps! You'll never beat me, not in this lifetime!"
