I wasn't in the mood for Iris's shit, so I tried to walk around her.
Seeing me trying to bail, Iris's face scrunched up. Just as she was about to lay into me again, a familiar face appeared in the hallway.
Something clicked in her twisted mind. She grabbed my arm and yanked me straight into the fountain.
Neither of us could swim. We thrashed around wildly, screaming our heads off.
My wounds tore open, blood turning the water red around me.
Freezing water rushed up my nose, making me hack and cough.
The pain was too much—I had zero strength to fight. My body just sank.
Right before blacking out, I spotted Nate sprinting over and diving in.
He swam right past me without a second glance, didn't offer a hand, just grabbed Iris and hauled her to safety.
Iris threw herself into his arms, eyes all teary, looking back at me still drowning, putting on this big dramatic show.
"Skylar accidentally pushed me in! Nate, she's my only sister. Please save her, okay?"
Hearing that and looking at me struggling, Nate's face turned to stone.
"Iris, stop covering for her. She obviously tried to drown you, then jumped in herself to play victim. Since she's determined to cause trouble, let her chill in the water for a bit!"
Each word felt like a stab to the chest.
My face was turning purple, ears buzzing, strength completely drained.
Everything started going fuzzy as I faded out.
I watched helplessly as Nate carried Iris away, then everything went black...
No idea how long I was out. A blast of cold air jolted me awake.
I came to, shaking like a leaf, with my parents towering over me, faces like thunder.
"You've completely lost it! You pushed Iris into the water? Were you trying to kill her so you could slide into her spot with Nate?"
"Listen up. As long as your father and I are breathing, that will never happen! You've never matched up to your sister in any way. You're not in Nate's league. Face facts and drop the fantasy!"
Their angry words left me freezing cold, my eyes filling with pure hopelessness.
All that pain I'd bottled up for years finally exploded.
"I'm not good enough? And she is? If you hadn't lied your asses off, Nate wouldn't give her the time of day! You stole what was supposed to be mine and handed it to her on a silver platter. How do you sleep at night?"
Seeing me talk back, Mom's face went tomato red. Dad raised his hand and cracked me across the face.
"You little bitch! We're your parents. Your life and everything you have is because of us. We can take it all back whenever we want, give it to your sister if we feel like it. Who the hell are you to complain?"
"If you ever tell anyone the truth, you'll see what we—"
Before he could finish, the door flew open.
Nate walked in, frowning hard.
"The truth? What truth?"
Seeing him pop up out of nowhere, my parents nearly jumped out of their skin, stammering like crazy.
"We were just... just setting this ungrateful kid straight, making her admit why she pushed Iris into the water."
"Y-yeah, she won't fess up. Your aunt and I are completely fed up. We don't know how to get through to her."
They exchanged this look, smoothly changing the subject.
Nate didn't think twice about it. He looked at me like I was something gross on his shoe.
"If she won't admit she screwed up, lock her in the morgue. When she's ready to say sorry, she can come out."
My parents thought this was genius and immediately called security to haul me away.
I touched my throbbing, red cheek, my eyes completely dead inside.
I knew fighting back would only make things worse, so I didn't even try as they dragged me off.
Stuck in that freezing morgue, all I could do was hug myself tight, shaking like crazy.
In that moment, I remembered back at Nate's family house, how we'd cuddle up during thunderstorms.
Back then, he'd wrap his jacket around me, hold my hand tight and pull me close, whispering "I'm here, don't be scared."
Sweet memories mixed with my freezing reality, messing with my head.
The minutes crawled by. Starving and freezing my ass off, I was barely with it when the door finally swung open.
Nate walked in with a face like ice, staring daggers at me.
"After a day and night, ready to admit you screwed up?"
"Yeah, I've learned my lesson. Completely."
I curled up tight, forcing the words out of my raw throat.
Seeing his satisfied smirk, I stumbled to my feet and got out of there, whispering to myself:
My mistake was buying his bullshit promise to be together. My mistake was falling for him in the first place.
