After getting out of the hospital, I went home and tossed everything Nate-related into the trash.
All my teenage diaries and love letters, his photos I'd sneakily collected, gifts I'd planned to give him, surprises I'd set up...
I'd always thought I'd share these with him someday, tell him the whole story of my secret crush once we were finally together.
But now I knew that ship had sailed. None of this crap mattered anymore.
I dumped it all. When I turned around, I bumped right into Nate who'd just dropped Iris off.
He eyeballed the garbage can, then gave me the same cold look.
Iris spotted all my stuff too and wrapped herself around his arm like a vine, putting on her baby voice.
"Nate, looks like Skylar's finally gotten the hint. She won't be hanging all over you anymore. She is my sister—you don't have to be such an ice king to her."
Nate stared at me like I was something on his shoe. "I'm always cold to people I don't like. Can't be bothered to fake it."
I kept my mouth shut, saying zip.
Taking a quick breath, I pushed down all those feelings and headed to my room.
Next day was Iris's birthday bash.
The place was jam-packed, everyone gossiping their heads off.
"This party Sullivan threw for his fiancée is insane! Those flowers? Flown in from Europe this morning. They're doing fireworks for three straight days. And that bling Iris is wearing? Worth millions—Sullivan personally battled for it at Sotheby's!"
"Man's emptying his wallet to make her happy! Iris hit the jackpot with him. Her whole family's riding that gravy train to the top. Too bad about her sister though—that walking disaster who's always eyeing her sister's man. Talk about desperate!"
"For real! They're sisters, but how come Skylar can't match up to Iris in any way? Less hot, worse personality, and she's always throwing herself at Sullivan. Girl's moral compass is busted! If she were my kid, I'd kick her to the curb. The Graysons are too soft!"
Hearing all this trash talk, I felt nothing but emptiness.
I sat in the corner like a ghost, trying to blend into the wallpaper.
Nearby, my parents and Nate circled Iris like she was the sun and they were planets.
They'd fix her dress, block drinks people tried to hand her, light her birthday candles, and sing happy birthday with these big fake smiles.
Watching this perfect family scene, I remembered my own birthdays—how Iris would always drag my parents away with some BS excuse, leaving me to blow out my candles alone.
During my time with Nate, he'd sit with me to make wishes and eat cake. He'd bring me gifts. I thought my lonely days were over.
But even those crumbs of attention I once had were completely gone.
And now, I was done caring.
In the middle of all the party noise, Iris closed her eyes, made her wish, and everyone brought out their presents.
She tore through them one by one—designer bags, fancy jewelry, the works—with this never-ending smile plastered on her face.
The last two gifts were from my parents and Nate. When they announced them, the place went nuts.
"After thinking long and hard, we've decided Iris will take over Grayson Enterprises and get all our family assets!"
"My gift to Iris is half of Sullivan Group, plus my family's heirloom wedding rings. My grandma swore couples who wear these rings stay in love forever. Iris, you're the only woman I've ever wanted to marry. Thanks for saying yes."
With everyone gawking, Nate slid the ring on Iris's finger, yanked her close, and planted one on her.
The whole place exploded with cheers and whistles, everyone gushing congratulations.
I watched from my corner, feeling like there was a rock on my chest.
I dug my nails into my palm, ready to bolt, when Iris called out to me.
"Skylar, where's your gift? When were you planning to give it to me?"
Suddenly, all eyes locked onto me.
I froze, then pulled out the present I'd prepared and walked it over.
Iris started unwrapping it with this smug little smile, ready to throw shade.
But Nate was staring at my wrist like he'd seen a ghost.
"Why do you have that bracelet?"
I looked up, caught his shocked expression, and automatically touched the bracelet.
Back when Nate was blind, I still got all dolled up to see him even though he couldn't see a thing.
I wore this bracelet all the time then. He'd feel it whenever he held my hand and would ask what stones were in it.
When I didn't answer, Nate grabbed my wrist, his voice urgent.
"Answer me! Why do you have this bracelet? Who the hell are you?!"
