I never thought Nate would recognize the damn bracelet but not me.
My emotions were all over the place. Just as I opened my mouth, Iris jumped in.
"Skylar, why'd you take my bracelet without asking?"
She lunged forward and grabbed at it, her claws raking bloody scratches across my hand.
I hissed in pain, trying to yank away, but she used that to throw herself backward like she'd been shoved.
Nate's face went dark instantly. He pulled Iris into his arms on reflex, shooting daggers at me with his eyes.
"So that's how it is. I thought..."
"You stole Iris's bracelet, then attacked her when you got caught? Skylar, you make me sick!"
Seeing him swallow Iris's lie without giving me a second to explain made my blood run cold.
I held up my bleeding hand, my voice raw with pain and hopelessness.
"If you remember this bracelet so well, how come you never noticed Iris hasn't worn it once since you got your eyesight back? Because she never knew about it. She's not the person you think—"
Before I could finish, my father cracked me across the face so hard I saw stars.
I stumbled backward into the champagne tower.
Hundreds of glasses came crashing down on me, drenching me completely.
I slammed onto the floor, my body covered in bruises and cuts, tears streaming down my face.
My mother marched over, face like stone, and dumped her red wine all over my head, her voice sharp as a razor.
"Iris doesn't wear it because it got damaged and was sent for repairs. The housekeeper just brought it back today, and you snuck in and grabbed it while we were out, thinking you could keep it for yourself?"
"We put up with your crap at home, but this is your sister's birthday! You're embarrassing our entire family in front of everyone! This was your grandmother's most treasured piece, meant for her favorite, Iris. How could it possibly be yours?"
My father backed her up perfectly, making Nate buy their bullshit completely.
He comforted Iris, who was fake-sobbing so hard she could barely breathe, gently wiping away her crocodile tears.
Then he walked over, crouched down beside me, and grabbed my bloody wrist.
He yanked off the bracelet, wiped the blood off with his handkerchief, and slipped it onto Iris's wrist like it was the crown jewels.
"Iris, this bracelet holds your grandmother's love and our five years of memories. I won't let anyone dirty it."
After that declaration, he turned to my father, his voice ice-cold.
"Mr. Grayson, stealing family property and acting like this—doesn't your family have some way of handling this kind of behavior?"
My father nodded eagerly and called for a whip, grabbing it himself.
"According to family rules, Skylar's offense today gets fifty lashes! I've failed as a father. To save our family's reputation, I'll teach this ungrateful brat a lesson in front of everyone!"
With that, he raised the whip and brought it down hard.
The crack echoed through the room as my back split open, my whole body shaking.
A scream ripped through the air as blood poured down my back, soaking through my clothes.
I was in so much pain I could barely see, choked words escaping my throat.
"I didn't steal... anything... the bracelet... was always... mine. Grandma... gave it to me!"
Looking at me writhing in my own blood, Nate didn't give a damn. He just covered Iris's eyes and walked her out.
Watching them leave, I closed my burning eyes.
I bit down on my bloody lips, forcing myself not to make another sound despite feeling like I was being torn apart.
When it was over, my parents walked out without even looking at me.
The guests and staff filed out one by one, throwing disgusted looks my way, leaving me totally alone.
I lay on that freezing floor, broken and bleeding, as the lights shut off.
Nothing but darkness swallowed me whole.
