I didn't drag myself to the hospital until the crack of dawn the next morning, barely able to move but determined to get my wounds treated.
When the doctor saw the mess of cuts and welts covering my body, his face went white. Cleaning and bandaging took three solid hours.
The pain was so bad I was soaked in cold sweat, snapping several fingernails from gripping the table like my life depended on it, but I powered through.
I crashed at the hospital for two days while my wounds crusted over.
The whole time, Iris blew up my phone with her gloating texts.
"Mom and Dad gave me the green light to turn your room into a nursery. My and Nate's kids will crash there when we visit. When you gonna clear your crap out?"
"Nate took me wedding dress shopping today. Loved a bunch of them, so he bought them all. My feet killed from trying on shoes, and he was so worried he massaged them right there in the store."
Looking at those pics of Nate making goo-goo eyes at Iris, I felt absolutely nothing.
I didn't bother replying. Once I could walk without passing out, I headed home and started packing.
Besides the bare essentials—ID, passport, that kind of stuff—I trashed everything else, kept zero mementos.
The housekeeper spotted me and nervously shuffled over.
"Miss Skylar, your sister meant for you to move down to the basement. Not much sunshine down there, but plenty of space. No need to dump all your stuff."
I looked around my stripped-bare room, voice totally flat.
"Don't need it. Won't use any of this junk again. Trash it all. I'm heading overseas soon. Not planning on coming back."
The housekeeper's jaw dropped, surprise written all over his face.
"You're leaving for good?"
Before he could get another word out, Nate pushed through the front door.
"Who's leaving for good?"
The housekeeper was about to spill when Iris bounced out of the bedroom. "You're super early! I'm not even done with my face!"
Nate completely ignored us, bee-lining straight to her and tapping her nose playfully.
"No rush, babe. Take your time. I'll wait."
"I can't get my stupid eyebrows even. You're so good with your hands—help a girl out?"
They disappeared back into the bedroom laughing, door clicking shut behind them.
I looked away and silently grabbed the handle of my packed suitcase.
For the rest of that day, Nate and Iris were practically attached at the hip, all gushy and gross.
He cooked her breakfast from scratch, pulled her onto his lap, and fed her bite by bite.
He watched movies with her, pointing out all the hidden details she missed.
He made out with her on the balcony, letting her smear lipstick all over his collar, looking at her like she hung the moon...
The staff who walked in on their PDA sessions whispered behind their hands.
"Miss Iris and Mr. Sullivan are so into each other. They're not even hitched yet, but they already act like they're on their honeymoon. Can't keep their hands off each other!"
"Miss Iris has been spoiled rotten since day one, which is why she's such a princess. Now she's marrying Mr. Sullivan who worships the ground she walks on? She's gonna be completely insufferable. Talk about winning life's lottery!"
"Poor Miss Skylar. Ignored by her folks her whole life, and the one dude she falls for ends up with her sister. They're actual blood sisters—how can anyone's luck suck that bad?"
Hearing them gossip through the door, I dropped my eyes to the floor.
I used to ask the universe a million times why it had it out for me.
But after dying once, I finally got the memo: anything I had to fight that hard for wasn't meant to be mine.
Family worked that way. Love did too.
So I stopped caring. I just wanted out, to leave forever, and never get stuck in that quicksand again.
