I couldn't believe I was still kicking.
The antiseptic smell hit me first. I stared at the ceiling for ages before my brain finally clicked on.
The doctor was checking me over, sounding pretty relieved.
"We fought for over ten hours to drag you back from death's door. Thank God you woke up."
My eyes fluttered at his words, my voice like sandpaper.
"Thanks for not letting me die."
The doctor nodded, giving me this look like he wanted to say more.
"The people who dropped you off... they were really your parents?"
My lips twitched, but I clammed up.
Seeing my face, the doctor took the hint and backed off with a sigh.
For two solid days, I was alone in that hospital room. Zero visitors.
When discharge day rolled around, my parents finally showed their faces—not to check if I was okay, but to remind me of their plans.
"Tomorrow's your sister's big day. Since you agreed to bail, make sure you're gone before the ceremony."
Their tone was so casual, like they were discussing the weather. I just nodded.
Seeing me play along, their faces softened a touch.
"Step aside for your sister's happiness. Once they're settled with a kid or two, we'll bring you back for some family time. We've put money in your account. Take care of yourself overseas."
With that, they rushed off to fuss over Iris, practically sprinting away.
I watched them go, then pulled out my ticket to England and ripped it to confetti.
I grabbed my phone and booked a flight to Australia instead.
I'd give them exactly what they wanted—everyone happy and content.
Just not how they pictured it—by vanishing completely where they'd never track me down.
After leaving the hospital, I hit up a lawyer and drafted papers to legally cut ties with my parents.
I signed my name with zero hesitation and dropped the document in a box.
I threw in a tape I'd secretly recorded of Nate telling me stories back when I'd visit him at his family's old house.
I'd tried to get him to listen to this tape a million times, but he wouldn't spare me even sixty seconds.
Now that I was out, I wanted to clean house.
Whether he ever listened didn't matter anymore.
I'd disappear completely, off everyone's radar.
That night, the house was a madhouse with wedding prep downstairs.
Sleep didn't come easy.
I dragged myself up early, forced down some breakfast, and loaded my suitcase in the trunk.
Just as I was about to peel out, the wedding party rolled up to collect the bride.
I spotted Nate in his fancy suit, looking like he stepped out of a magazine. I nodded politely, calling him "brother-in-law" for the first and last time.
Nate looked thrown, eyeing my packed car suspiciously.
"You don't need to show up at the wedding. Just stay put."
I knew they were scared I'd crash their perfect day.
I shook my head and handed him the gift I'd put together, keeping my voice flat.
"I'm not crashing your wedding, and I'm done messing with your happily ever after. Congrats on getting hitched. See ya."
With that, I jumped in my car and slammed the door.
Nate watched me start the engine, looking weirdly jumpy.
For a split second, it seemed like he wanted to stop me, to ask where I was headed.
But before he could open his mouth, Iris appeared in her wedding dress, whining for attention.
"Nate, hold me!"
In my rearview, I watched him toss my box to some assistant and spin around to sweep Iris up like a princess.
As my car rolled out of the neighborhood, I cracked the window and chucked my phone into a ditch.
From today on, the old Skylar was dead and buried.
And the new Skylar would start fresh, no looking back.
