I gave the apartment a quick cleanup, then emptied my suitcase, stuffing all my clothes into the closet.
I set out my breakables one by one, making sure nothing got smashed.
After eyeing my freshly set-up space, I finally felt good enough to shower and crash.
That plane nap had been total garbage.
When I peeled my eyes open again, it was already 2 PM.
Staring at my new digs, everything still felt weird.
It took me a full minute to wrap my head around the fact that I was actually in freaking Australia.
February in Sydney meant summer vibes, so I threw on a light dress and bounced.
Unlike back home where I'd always get all dolled up, now I just wanted to feel the sun on my skin.
The game plan was simple: food first, then groceries.
Suddenly, this killer smell hit my nose out of nowhere.
My stomach growled instantly.
I followed my nose like a bloodhound straight to this restaurant.
Seeing they did steaks, I ordered their signature cut, telling them to hold the cheesy potato nonsense.
When my plate arrived, I dove right in. The meat melted in my mouth—seriously good stuff.
I was totally in my happy place.
Then, as I went to pay, horror struck—I'd left all my cash and cards in my other pants.
When I'd changed into the dress, I'd completely spaced on that.
Just as I was about to die of embarrassment, a hand appeared with a card, covering my bill.
I looked up, shocked to see Airport Guy from this morning.
Now I could finally check out his face.
Dude had model-worthy features, with these perfect cheekbones and a jawline that could cut glass.
Something coolly intense about him.
I thanked him like fifty times.
"How can I pay you back?"
"Don't sweat it. I have a membership here," he said, flashing some fancy gold card.
His perfect English threw me for a loop—he really didn't look like someone who'd speak the language.
But that meal cost a fortune, and no way was I letting that slide.
"No way, I'm paying you back!"
The words shot out before my brain could catch up.
He half-turned and casually dropped: "Then buy me ice cream next time."
"From that shop downstairs at our building."
I froze like a statue, suddenly realizing that the person I'd glimpsed in the stairwell must've been him.
I hadn't been hallucinating after all.
"Deal. Ice cream it is."
After he walked off, I realized I hadn't even gotten his name.
I felt weirdly annoyed with myself. I mean, the guy had just covered my pricey meal.
Back at the apartment, I grabbed my cash and headed back out for groceries.
Looking at my packed fridge, I felt this weird sense of safety wash over me.
My phone suddenly buzzed. I checked to find Iris had emailed me a bunch of photos.
There she was, rocking a white mermaid gown, flashing that fake sweet smile at the camera.
Behind her stood Nate, looking at her like she hung the moon.
Picture-perfect newlyweds, barf.
The other shots showed off her massive rock and a family portrait with my parents.
My grip tightened around the phone.
Iris's game was crystal clear.
She just wanted to rub in my face that Nate was completely obsessed with her now.
Her messages below were even worse.
[This is THE dress. Gorgeous, right? I originally liked a different one, but Nate said this shows off my tiny waist better, so he bought me both. Same with the ring—I said it was too flashy since I barely wear jewelry, but Nate wouldn't take no for an answer.]
[We considered inviting you to the wedding, but Nate put his foot down. Said he didn't want your face ruining his special day, and Mom and Dad thought you'd bring bad luck. So unanimous vote—you're out.]
[Now that we're about to tie the knot, time for you to get the message. I don't care what happened between you and Nate before, but from now on, remember I'm the only one who gets to be with him, and Nate is ONLY your brother-in-law!]
Reading this crap, I could practically hear Iris's snotty voice and see her smug face.
I didn't bother replying. Just closed the page.
I suddenly flashed back to Nate tracing my face with his fingers, saying my eyes must be stunning.
I'd asked what if he got his sight back and thought I was a troll.
He'd promised that no matter what I looked like, I'd always be the most beautiful person to him.
His teenage sweet talk had been so intense and real.
My ears had burned hearing it.
I'd actually pictured a future with him—marriage, kids, the whole package.
Even though I'd already kicked my feelings for Nate to the curb,
Seeing these photos still felt like someone squeezing my heart.
But what's done is done. Zero expectations from here on out.
