The Pierce mansion was pure chaos.
Through the screaming fire truck sirens, a sports car skidded to a stop out front.
Adrian threw open the door and ignored everyone's shocked faces as he ran toward the second floor that was completely on fire.
He wished he could just fly up there.
Flames had hit the roof, thick smoke everywhere.
The staff were screaming: "Charlotte's still inside!"
Charlotte hadn't made it out.
Fear slammed into Adrian's chest.
He pushed through the burning heat and charged straight into the fire.
"Charlotte! Charlotte! Where are you?!"
Flames ate at his skin but he couldn't feel anything, running straight for her bedroom.
But the second he burst through the door, he froze.
On the bed, surrounded by flames, was the charred, blackened outline of a human body.
That was... Charlotte?
The realization drained all color from Adrian's face. He wanted to go to her, but his legs felt like concrete.
"Charlotte..." he called out hoarsely.
Only the crackling of flames answered him.
A loud crack came from above as a crystal chandelier crashed down!
Adrian couldn't dodge in time—the heavy fixture slammed into his back.
He collapsed to the floor but kept staring at the figure on the bed, still whispering, "Charlotte..."
Through the pain, he saw the wall lit up by flames—
Line after line written in deep red lipstick, brutal to read.
[Adrian, you let me down.]
Just that one line nearly choked him.
[My whole life was a disaster, but the one thing I was certain of was marrying you.
At least you once said you loved me.
I remember how sure you were back then, calling me Charlotte, swearing you'd marry me, love me, keep me safe forever.
I believed you. I waited so damn happy for you to come get me.
But you married Jessica instead.
Preston trashed my reputation, Jessica destroyed my legs, and you ditched me like garbage.
Nothing left in this world worth sticking around for.
I'll die to prove I was innocent.
One last wish for you: Adrian, hope you and Jessica are really happy together.]
That final blessing stabbed straight through Adrian's heart.
He completely broke down, letting out an animalistic roar: "Charlotte, I was wrong, I was so wrong..."
The burning flames, the crushed chandelier—none of it hurt even a fraction as much as his heart breaking right now.
He'd screwed up.
Screwed up beyond belief.
He never should have played the martyr, pretending Preston had turned him against her "for her own good"!
And he never imagined Charlotte had loved him this deeply!
How could she be so stupid!
Adrian suddenly coughed up blood and finally, collapsed into darkness.
While unconscious, Adrian fell into chaotic dreams.
He dreamed he'd married Charlotte.
In a luxury hotel suite, he joyfully held her in her white wedding dress.
Whispering in her ear: "Charlotte, I finally married you. This is the happiest day of my life..."
"Mine too," the woman in his arms whispered back.
He looked down to kiss her, but saw Jessica's face instead!
Adrian jerked awake, cold sweat soaking his hospital gown.
Seeing him wake up, Jessica rushed to his bedside with red eyes. "Adrian! You were out for three days! Thank God you're awake! Doctor! Get the doctor!"
The doctor in the white coat finished his examination and told Jessica: "Mr. Blackwell's fever broke—he's out of danger. The burns on his back need regular dressing changes."
Jessica nodded repeatedly. "Okay, thank you, doctor. We'll be careful."
After the doctor left, she leaned over with concern. "Adrian, are you hurt anywhere else?"
Adrian stared at her blankly.
The memories came flooding back.
He'd married Jessica, and Charlotte was dead.
Crushing regret swallowed him whole.
He suddenly grabbed Jessica's wrist, asking desperately: "That body wasn't her, right? It wasn't Charlotte, right?"
Jessica cried out: "Adrian! You're hurting me!"
But Adrian ignored her, just staring intensely, waiting for an answer.
Jessica's chest tightened.
At first, she'd looked down on Adrian as "new money"—not as established as the Fitzgerald family.
But Preston's dark side scared her.
So she'd turned to the gentle Adrian instead.
In just one month, she'd fallen for him.
Even though he was always distant, she figured that was just his personality.
Until she noticed Adrian's eyes would unconsciously follow Charlotte around, with a longing she'd never seen before.
Jealousy ate her alive.
So she deliberately planned that "accident" to destroy Charlotte's legs.
She thought she'd eliminated the threat, but Charlotte had set that fire on their wedding day!
Forcing Jessica to finish the ceremony alone while guests stared and whispered!
It was humiliating!
But with Charlotte dead, she felt a twisted satisfaction.
Seeing that desperate hope in Adrian's eyes, Jessica crushed it with cold precision.
"The medical examiner did DNA testing. It was her. Charlotte is definitely dead."
The light in Adrian's eyes instantly died.
He let go of her hand and stared blankly at the ceiling. After a long silence, he said hoarsely: "I'm tired. I need to be alone."
Jessica's face tightened, but she reluctantly left the room.
Once the door closed, a muffled sob echoed through the empty room.
