"Nate!"
Iris kept shouting his name again and again, but he was totally zoned out.
She was getting seriously pissed.
The guests were starting to whisper to each other, and the officiant was scrambling like crazy to cover the awkward moment.
In a panic, Iris jabbed Nate's arm.
That finally snapped him back to reality.
The officiant jumped in, saying the groom was probably dead tired from all the wedding prep and begged everyone to cut him some slack.
They exchanged rings in a total fog, and then came time for the toast.
"I'm feeling like crap. Let's do the toast later," Nate said, then just walked off without giving a damn how Iris felt.
She wanted to run after him, but all the guests were still sitting there waiting.
Iris had no choice but to stay and bullshit her way through it.
"Nate was driving all night yesterday, so he's totally wiped. He'll be back to hang with you guys in a bit."
She lifted her glass and took a swig.
The guests were confused as hell, but nobody wanted to make a scene.
I mean, it was their freaking wedding.
Nate headed backstage, where his assistant immediately handed him the box.
He popped it open and found a small cassette tape and some legal document cutting off parental rights.
The signature on the paper made him freeze.
Was her relationship with her family that bad?
Why would she go and legally dump her own parents?
But from what he'd seen, her folks were always super sweet to Iris. None of this made any sense.
As his fingers touched the tape, Nate realized he'd seen this before.
He remembered her bringing this exact tape to him once, begging him to listen, but he'd blown her off, thinking she was just being dramatic.
Now that she'd given it to him as a wedding gift, he suddenly had to know what was on it.
He grabbed a laptop and plugged the tape in.
After some static, a guy's voice started telling a story. The smooth, deep tone hit him like a truck.
Because the voice wasn't just anybody's—it was his own!
This was him telling stories back when he was blind. Why the hell would her sister have this?
Could it be that the person who'd been with him wasn't Iris at all, but her sister?
Or had she just stolen it from Iris?
Nate immediately grabbed his phone and tried calling her, but couldn't get through.
So he snatched the tape and stormed off to confront Iris directly.
Since she was so damn sure she was "the one," she had to know something.
Nate yanked Iris away from the toast and dragged her backstage. "Iris, were you really the one who stayed with me back then?"
His grip was so tight she couldn't break free.
"Nate, what the hell? Why are you suddenly asking this?"
"Of course it was me with you. Who else would put up with your blind ass?"
"What's wrong with you? You've been acting weird all day!"
She sounded seriously annoyed.
"What about the stories I told you? Do you remember them?" Nate asked, his voice low.
"Yeah, sure I remember! It's just been forever, so I don't remember every little detail."
Iris couldn't even look him in the eye.
Her nervousness and panic were written all over her face.
At this point, even if Nate couldn't figure out every piece of the puzzle, one thing was crystal clear:
Iris was a straight-up fraud!
I was the one he'd been looking for all along!
