Nate just stared at her with ice-cold eyes, not saying a damn word.
That's when Iris realized she'd totally screwed up. She scrambled to fix it: "I didn't forget your stories on purpose! This whole wedding thing has me completely fried."
"Don't be mad, Nate. After we're hitched, you can tell me all those stories again, okay?"
She grabbed his sleeve and gave it a little playful tug.
Nate looked at her face just inches from his and wanted to puke.
"Iris! You're still fucking lying to me?"
"You were never the one who stayed with me!"
He shoved her hard. Caught completely off guard, Iris went flying down the stairs.
She crashed right onto the main floor in front of everyone.
Her wedding dress ripped open, and she was bruised all over.
In a flash, a million cameras went off in her face.
Iris couldn't even feel the pain shooting through her body—she was too busy frantically covering her face.
She didn't dare move an inch.
She wanted to chase after Nate and explain, but he was already one step ahead, storming onto the stage and grabbing the mic.
"Everyone, this wedding is officially DONE."
"Iris is not the bride I've been looking for!"
With that, he marched straight out of the banquet hall.
Nate had barely made it out when he ran smack into Iris's parents.
"What's going on, Nate? Where are you rushing off to? Aren't we doing the toast now?"
Nate looked at their clueless faces and threw the box at their feet.
Just thinking about how they'd all conspired with Iris to trick him made his blood boil.
"The wedding's off. You know damn well why. I won't forget what the Graysons did."
His words hit Iris's parents like a truck.
They shot each other a panicked look, snatched the box off the floor, and bolted toward the hall.
The guests immediately started buzzing with gossip.
"What the hell just happened? Didn't they just finish the ceremony? Now it's canceled? Did Nate just bail on his own wedding?"
"You haven't heard? Nate was kept in some house outside the city before. They say he was even blind for a while. That's when he met this girl, and he's been searching for her. From what happened today, looks like someone was pretending to be that girl and got caught red-handed. Why else would he cancel a wedding last minute? That's not just cold feet!"
"Damn, so that's what happened! She deserves it then. Who told her to impersonate someone else? Now she's publicly humiliated at her own wedding. The Graysons must be mortified. What kind of daughter did they raise?"
Though the voices were low, Iris heard every single word.
She dug her nails into her palms so hard they drew blood before she finally stopped.
Her parents rushed over, frantically blocking the cameras as they dragged her to the back.
"Iris, did you slip up? How did Nate suddenly figure it out now?" her mother asked, dead serious.
"I didn't! I didn't say a damn thing! It must be Skylar! She must have done something to make Nate suspicious!"
"She just can't stand to see me happy! She made me look like a total idiot! Mom, Dad, you have to teach her a lesson!"
Iris yelled through her tears.
Her mother looked at her sobbing daughter with heartache. "Okay, okay, I promise we'll deal with your sister. How could she do this to you?"
Her father chimed in: "That's right. You know we've always loved you most. Don't worry, we'll make this right!"
"That's more like it. But what about Nate? He definitely knows I'm not the one!"
A flash of hatred crossed Iris's eyes.
"Don't worry, we'll explain everything to Nate. If we have to, we'll go straight to his family. Our family has a reputation too. This wedding WILL happen!"
Her mother reassured her.
"I knew it! You always love me best!"
Iris threw herself into her mother's arms.
Suddenly, she noticed a box in her father's hand that looked familiar.
It looked exactly like the wedding gift I had given Nate.
But she distinctly remembered telling Nate's assistant to trash it when they got out of the car.
How the hell was it back here now?
"What's this?"
Iris opened it casually and found some legal document.
The bold title jumped out at her:
Termination of Parental Rights.
