For the next few weeks, Declan and I kept hitting up the animal hospital together.
Thanks to the nurses going all out, the kitten was bouncing back like crazy.
I was dying to take the little dude home, but my landlord had made it crystal clear—no pets allowed. That was a non-negotiable part of my lease.
"Why don't we keep it at my place?" Declan suggested. "I've got way more space, plus I've had cats back home." He whipped out his phone to show me.
His wallpaper was this adorable tabby cat with these huge round eyes that could melt anyone's heart.
"Fine, but I'm buying all the cat food and stuff," I insisted. "You already grabbed the vet bill. This round's on me."
"Deal," Declan nodded. "Though you probably can't carry it all yourself. Let me tag along."
I wasn't expecting him to be so thoughtful, so I jumped at the offer.
We went on this massive shopping spree for cat supplies and toys. I'm the worst when it comes to making decisions—I get totally stuck between options.
But Declan didn't get annoyed at all. He just patiently offered suggestions the whole time.
It gave me this warm fuzzy feeling inside.
Nobody had ever been this patient with me before. Well, except for Nate in the beginning... before he couldn't even spare five minutes to listen to a damn recording.
"You okay?" Declan asked, catching my mood shift.
"Yeah, just realized we haven't named the kitten yet," I said, covering quickly.
"Well, you should do the honors. You're basically its mom now."
I thought for a second.
"How about Summer? Since we found him in the summer."
I looked up at Declan, weirdly nervous about what he'd think.
"That's perfect. Summer it is," he agreed with a smile.
It was pretty late by the time we left the hospital, so Declan called a cab. While we waited, he actually called ahead to make sure the driver was cool with us bringing a cat.
The driver was totally fine with it, but when he pulled up, he gave me this weird look and said something to Declan in Russian.
I leaned over to Declan. "Why's he looking at me like that? What did he say?"
"He said your cat's so cute he wants to steal it," Declan replied with a straight face.
"Are you serious? Why would he say that?" I clutched Summer protectively against my chest.
My reaction cracked Declan up.
"I'm just messing with you."
I didn't say anything, but I kept a tight grip on Summer anyway. What Declan didn't see was how his laughter had me fighting a smile too.
After reluctantly setting Summer up at Declan's place, I finally dragged myself home for a quick shower.
My phone buzzed while I was drying off.
I picked it up, wondering who'd be texting me so late, only to see it was just a news alert.
The headline hit me like a truck: "Billionaire Nate Publicly Cancels Wedding, Claims Bride Is Not 'The One He's Been Searching For'"
In the crystal-clear photos, the wedding venue looked like a total disaster zone.
But what caught my eye immediately were the sunflowers everywhere. Hand-drawn sunflowers on posters, cartoon sunflowers on the wedding favors at every table.
All because I once told him I loved sunflowers.
I'd even said my dream wedding would have a sunflower theme.
Clearly, he remembered.
As I scrolled down, my chest tightened.
Nate had finally listened to my recording.
But even knowing that, I couldn't let myself hope again. Everything he'd done to me was still too fresh, too raw.
No matter what grand gesture he pulled now, it was too damn late.
I closed the page and hit unfollow on everything connected to him.
Whatever was happening in Nate's world, I was 100% done being part of it.
