Meanwhile, Nate was pacing by this giant window, trying to look cool with a cigarette, but I could tell he was freaking out.
Since he figured out I was the girl he'd been hunting for, he'd had his goons tearing up the city looking for me. Total waste of time.
I'd nuked all my contacts—completely ghosted everyone back home.
His head was a total mess—part guilty, part desperate.
Guilty 'cause he'd hung out with me for weeks and never clicked who I was.
Desperate 'cause after all the garbage he'd pulled, he might never get to explain his side.
Right now, only one thing was eating him alive: find me, like, yesterday.
When someone knocked, he squashed his cigarette like it owed him money.
"So you're gonna run to my family with this crap?" Nate's voice could've frozen hell over.
Dad barely got through the door before he looked ready to piss himself. The room might as well have been a walk-in freezer.
"God no, absolutely not!" he backpedaled so fast he nearly fell. "I just hate seeing such a perfect couple split up."
Face-to-face with Nate, Dad's big-man act crumbled. His voice went full-on kiss-ass mode.
"Perfect couple?" Nate snorted. "You Graysons really think I'm some kinda moron, huh?"
Dad couldn't even look Nate in the eye anymore.
But thinking about Iris back home, throwing her tantrum, he pushed on.
"Me and the wife adore you! We'd never think you're stupid."
"Look, you and Iris hit it off great. Who cares who took care of you way back when?"
"Why not just... roll with it? Water under the bridge, right?"
Nate couldn't believe the BS coming out of Dad's mouth.
"So you're finally owning up—it wasn't Iris who helped me. It was Skylar, wasn't it?"
He grabbed Dad by his shirt. "Spit it out now, or I swear I'll chuck you through this window myself."
Dad was already terrified, but now he looked ready to faint. One look at how high up they were, and he collapsed like a cheap lawn chair.
"Yeah! It was Skylar, not Iris!" he squealed.
"We didn't know at first! Iris said you were looking for someone just like Skylar."
"So we let Iris fake being her. And yeah, that bracelet? Totally Skylar's."
Nate's face went dark.
"If you worship me so damn much, why all the games? You've got two daughters—why lie to my face?"
"Iris is my real kid—my actual blood," Dad said, suddenly all proud. "Skylar was just born to save her life. She's basically a spare part. Of course they're not the same..."
Hearing Dad talk about us like that, Nate finally got why I'd cut them out of my life.
His face showed he felt even worse for me now.
"Where's Skylar? You hiding her somewhere?" Nate barked, sounding desperate.
"She bounced to England."
"You got an address?"
Dad shook his head.
Nate just stared at him, disgusted by the zero remorse on Dad's face.
He snapped his fingers, and his security guys grabbed Dad and dragged him, plus Mom waiting downstairs, to the basement.
Dad's face was priceless.
"I spilled everything! You can't do this!"
"Nate! This'll come back to bite you!"
His yelling faded fast, leaving just that annoying clock ticking away.
Nate tried lighting another cigarette, but his lighter crapped out.
He lost it and chucked the ashtray across the room.
Glass went flying everywhere.
A piece sliced his arm open, blood running down like a faucet.
Had to hurt like hell, but his face didn't even twitch.
Skylar.
Where the fuck are you?
I know everything now.
Just let me see you. Once.
What Nate didn't know was I'd put an ocean between us, doing my damnedest to wipe him from my memory for good.
