"Boss, got that dirt you wanted," Nate's assistant said, dropping a fat folder on his desk.
Nate flipped it open to find hospital bills staring back at him.
The paperwork spelled it out—when Iris was three, she got hit with some nasty disease and needed emergency cord blood, like, yesterday.
I was literally born as a human spare parts kit for her.
Nate's knuckles went white around the papers.
He'd always wondered why my parents played favorites so damn hard. This explained everything.
There was also my banged-up phone in the file.
Nate knew it instantly—my old one.
His guy had tracked the SIM card's last ping and had the tech nerds recover whatever they could before handing it over.
Nate stared at the lock screen, his finger hovering over the keypad.
He punched in 0616.
My phone unlocked with a little beep.
His eyes got all misty instantly.
June 16th—his freaking birthday.
I'd logged out of most apps, but there were still photos and texts I hadn't wiped.
He started scrolling through my pics.
Random flowers on the street. Weird-shaped clouds.
But mostly? Him.
From our college days right up to when he went blind.
I'd saved every single one, like they were precious gems.
I even kept those lame class photos where he was barely visible in the back row.
A knot formed in his throat.
I'd been quietly crushing on him forever, in moments he never even noticed.
Even when his family kicked him to the curb, I'd shown up for him.
He couldn't shake the memory of all those days we'd spent together.
Or how real I'd always been with him.
My love had always been on mute—never making a big scene.
Like a still pond—calm on the surface, but deep as hell.
When he opened my messages, Nate nearly dropped the phone seeing that the person who texted me the most was Iris.
The witch had been bombarding me with wedding dress shots and lovey-dovey pics of her and Nate.
With each swipe of his thumb, his chest got tighter.
The captions were pure poison:
["Heard you stalked Nate again. Desperate much? He's your BROTHER-IN-LAW now. What's your endgame, you little homewrecker?"]
["Still don't get it? I'm the ONLY one who gets Nate. Mom and Dad are Team Iris all the way, so stop embarrassing yourself!"]
["FYI, you only exist because of ME. If I hadn't gotten sick, you wouldn't even be here. So wake up! Whatever I want, I get—Nate included. Unless you wanna get kicked out of the family!"]
Reading this garbage, Nate's blood was practically boiling.
This identity theft bullshit was even nastier than he'd thought.
Everything had gone to hell because Iris couldn't handle not getting what she wanted.
That, plus my parents treating her like she crapped gold, had kept him and me apart.
Now that he saw the whole picture, what came next was a no-brainer.
Since my parents had already handed themselves over, time to reel in the mastermind—Iris.
Nate barked at his assistant to drag her over ASAP.
Meanwhile, Iris—who'd been throwing a pity party in her room—practically jumped for joy when she heard Nate wanted to see her.
She figured my parents had worked their magic.
She threw on her hottest outfit, caked on the makeup, and eventually strutted out with the assistant, taking her sweet-ass time.
"Drive slow, okay? Can't mess up this face!" she ordered, checking herself out in her mirror.
Total Iris move—she only played nice when Nate was watching.
The assistant didn't even bother arguing.
He just gave her this look.
Like he was watching a dead woman walking.
Because he knew exactly what kind of dude Nate Sullivan really was.
And Iris? Poor girl had no clue about the shitstorm heading her way.
Little did any of them know, I was an ocean away, starting fresh and doing my best to leave all of them in the past.
