By the time we hauled our asses back from the store, the rain had totally cleared up.
Declan and I were lugging our grocery haul, just chilling and taking the scenic route home.
Life was good.
Until I spotted that oh-so-familiar face lurking outside our apartment building.
The smile dropped off my face faster than a hot potato.
The absolute last person I expected to hunt me down?
Nate freaking Sullivan.
He'd actually tracked me to the other side of the planet.
Sharp-as-a-tack Declan caught my "oh shit" face instantly. He clocked Nate in the distance and stepped in front of me like a human shield.
Before seeing me, Nate had been all puppy-dog excited.
But the second he spotted a dude next to me, his face twisted up like he'd bitten a lemon.
When he got close enough to see Declan clearly, he went from pissed to full-blown rage monster.
He stormed toward us, but Declan cut him off before he could get to me.
"Who the hell are you?" Declan demanded.
"That's my line. Who are YOU?" Nate fired back, looking ready to throw hands.
Getting blocked made Nate even more heated.
But with me right there, he was trying not to lose his shit completely.
Declan totally brushed off Nate's tough-guy act and turned to me instead.
"Skylar, this guy bothering you?" he asked.
I nodded.
"Want me to get you outta here?" Declan's eyes were all worried.
"It's cool. Let's bounce. Just ignore him," I said, ready to walk right past Nate.
"Skylar, please. Five minutes. That's all I'm asking," Nate practically begged.
My feet stopped moving at his words.
By now, Declan had connected the dots.
"Look at him—dude's not taking a hint. Maybe just rip the band-aid off? I'll hang back, but I'll be right over there if you need me."
"Fine," I agreed.
Once I gave him the green light, Declan took my bags and walked a bit away, close enough to see but far enough for privacy.
During this whole exchange, neither of us had even glanced at Nate—like he was just some random street performer we weren't tipping.
I finally turned to face him: "Nate, we're done. Period."
"You picked Iris. Don't come crawling back now."
My voice was pure ice.
He looked like I'd punched him in the gut.
We hadn't actually talked in forever.
In his head, I'd always been this sweet, soft-spoken girl.
He'd never seen me this cold before.
"Skylar, I screwed up. I should've known it was you the second I saw you. Can you ever give me another chance?"
"I get that you're probably still pissed about the Iris thing. But trust me, she's paid for it. I found out every shitty thing she did to you, and I made her suffer twice as bad."
"Can we start over? Please? I'm dying without you."
Nate was practically on his knees, his voice shaking.
His guilt was written all over his face.
Since finding out the truth, he'd been walking around with a Skylar-shaped hole in his chest.
After weeks of searching, he'd finally tracked me down. All he wanted was another shot.
His eyes were practically begging.
I didn't answer right away. I just stared him down.
Something about my look made him squirm like a worm on a hook.
He looked away first, totally unable to handle my stare.
After what felt like forever, I finally spoke: "Nate, I've been crushing on you since freaking high school. The time we spent together was the best part of my life. It was so perfect it felt like a dream."
"I kept hoping you'd just... know it was me. Or at least give me one lousy minute to explain. But you didn't."
"I've made my peace with everything now. What's done is done."
"Skylar, I..." Nate stammered like an idiot.
He clearly wanted to say something meaningful but came up empty.
His mouth kept opening and closing like a goldfish, but nothing came out.
"Nate, when I walked away from you, I promised myself no takebacks. I loved you once, but that ship has sailed. We're over. For good. Please just leave me alone, okay?"
With that, I turned and walked straight to Declan.
Nate just stood there watching me go, looking like someone had ripped his heart out.
Before flying all the way to Australia, he'd pictured this moment a thousand different ways. He'd told himself he'd do literally ANYTHING to win me back.
But now here I was, right in front of him, straight-up telling him I was over him.
Nate felt like someone had dumped him in a freezer. Cold spread through his body like he'd been injected with ice water, numbing him from the inside out.
