After that showdown, I never laid eyes on Nate again.
The gossip mill said he'd dumped his company and vanished off the face of the earth.
My parents tried crawling back into my life a few times, but I shut that down real quick—just mailed back their own "you're not our kid anymore" paperwork without a single word.
Did it hit me in the feels? Yeah, duh. But I wasn't about to let those people back into my world.
That whole mess felt like someone else's life at this point.
Fast-forward a year, and I'd hustled my way into opening my own little design shop.
I'd found my tribe—a few ride-or-die friends who actually got me.
The grind was way more brutal than my cushy corporate job.
But I was finally doing exactly what I'd always dreamed about.
The payoff felt frickin' amazing.
On the day we officially launched, I planned to drag Declan out to celebrate, as per usual.
I banged on his door, but crickets.
I blew up his phone—calling like a stalker—still nothing.
Then my phone lit up with a news alert: black Pagani totaled in a high-speed crash.
Driver dead on the spot.
My heart dropped through the floor.
Declan had treated himself to a black Pagani for his 25th birthday.
I didn't even finish reading—just jumped in the first cab I saw and told them to floor it.
I was straight-up losing my mind the whole ride.
Every red light felt like torture as I begged the universe this wasn't happening.
At the scene, cops had everything roped off like a crime scene.
I tried to muscle my way through, but they blocked me like a wall.
"I know the driver!" I practically screamed. "Let me see!"
"How do you know him?" the officer asked, eyeing me.
"He's my boyfriend," I blurted, not even thinking.
The cop gave me this weird look and flashed the driver's ID.
The guy in the photo was some senior citizen—a drug dealer who'd had a heart attack and crashed.
The relief hit me so hard my legs just gave out.
When Declan got the call from the cops, he was completely lost.
But when he showed up and spotted the mangled black Pagani, everything clicked.
He rushed over and scooped me up: "It's okay, Skylar. I'm right here!"
"I came as fast as I could."
Through my ugly crying, I managed to chew him out: "Where the hell have you been? I've been freaking out!"
"I thought you were dead!"
"I was setting up something special for you," he confessed.
"I was finally gonna make my move today!"
"At my office, right?" I asked, still hiccupping.
"How'd you—" his jaw dropped.
"Security cameras, Einstein."
Declan face-palmed—total rookie mistake.
I'd caught him on camera days ago but played dumb to let him have his moment.
"So what do you say?" he asked, pulling out a freaking ring from nowhere.
My eyes bugged out.
"Hold up—I thought this was just a confession! Why are you packing jewelry?"
"Same difference. I was gonna lock this down sooner or later anyway."
Something about how sure he sounded made me tear up all over again.
I felt like my heart might burst.
"Gonna need some time to think about it," I teased.
"Take forever if you need to," he grinned.
The sun was hitting him just right through the trees.
Standing there, I could literally feel that broken piece of my heart starting to heal over.
And Declan? He was exactly the ray of sunshine I needed to make me whole again.
