The assistant was incredibly efficient.
Late that night, in the top-floor office of Blackwell Tech headquarters.
"Before the accident, Charlotte tried to sell some designer jewelry and limited edition handbags. But..."
The assistant paused. "Every auction house and high-end consignment shop got a heads-up from Preston—they weren't supposed to take anything from Charlotte."
Adrian's eyes went cold. "Preston got to them first?"
"Yeah. It's weird though—Charlotte shouldn't have been that desperate for cash, and Preston somehow knew exactly what she'd try to pull."
Adrian closed his eyes.
All the details he'd missed suddenly came crashing back.
The day he proposed, Charlotte had coldly shot him down one second, then completely flipped the next.
And when Preston rolled up, she quickly put on the engagement ring herself.
She'd even smacked Preston right across the face, staring at him like he was her worst enemy.
In that moment, Adrian felt so damn happy he could barely breathe.
But then he talked himself into thinking it was all some game to make Preston jealous.
So he walked away feeling totally crushed.
Adrian rubbed his pounding head hard.
Why didn't he just trust her?
His assistant spoke up again: "And boss, I got that security footage you wanted."
With that, he pulled up the screen on the other side of the desk.
In the club hallway corner, Preston snapped his fingers, and then two massive bodyguards grabbed struggling Charlotte.
Preston pried her jaw open, forced in the pill, and then made her chug the liquor straight.
She gagged and cried as Preston half-dragged, half-carried her toward the private room.
Every damn frame was crystal clear and sickening.
Then another security feed showed that right after Charlotte got dragged into the room, some creepy dude with a professional camera was firing off shots through the cracked door.
The office door burst open and a bodyguard shoved in a shaking paparazzi guy.
Adrian just gave him one icy stare, and the guy's legs gave out and he dropped to his knees.
"Please don't hurt me, Mr. Blackwell! It was all Preston! He threw serious cash at me to be there at that exact moment and said if I caught anything juicy to blast it online right away!"
"He said Charlotte was being a bitch about it, and he wanted to trash her rep so bad she'd have to marry him..."
Adrian squeezed his eyes shut, his fists clenched white.
He flashed back to her broken cry for help in that hallway—he could've saved Charlotte right then and there.
But Preston's bullshit had totally played him, and he'd basically shoved her deeper into hell himself!
The crushing regret nearly suffocated him.
His assistant continued the report steadily: "And as for Preston, we found out he's got a waterfront apartment at Harbor Bay where he keeps some semi-famous influencer named Lily."
The next day, at the Harbor Bay waterfront apartment.
Preston had just used his fingerprint to unlock the door when a curvy woman in a silk nightgown rushed over, her voice all sugary: "Baby~ I've been waiting forever for you! You haven't visited me in ages~"
Preston loosened his tie and gave her a cold "Mmm."
Lily read his mood and asked carefully: "You having a rough day, babe?"
Rough?
Preston's mouth twisted into a bitter smile.
When he'd heard about Charlotte's "death," he'd smashed his entire liquor cabinet.
Then when he found out she'd faked it, that rage nearly exploded out of his chest.
She'd actually had the balls to pull something this big just to escape him!
And beneath all that rage, panic started creeping in.
The world was huge—if she really ran off to the middle of nowhere, how the hell would he find her?
Suddenly, Preston let out a bitter laugh and muttered: "Ha, what can some crippled woman really do anyway?"
Lily's eyes flickered.
Preston was obsessing over that disabled Pierce daughter again.
He talked trash about her, but that crazy furniture-smashing and the darkness in his eyes didn't lie.
She pushed down her thoughts and poured him a drink. "Here babe, chill out."
Preston took it and downed it in one gulp.
He drank too fast and started coughing, his eyes watering.
Once he finally stopped, he kept going—one drink after another.
Late into the night.
Preston was totally wasted and felt someone struggling to help him lie down, then someone gave him some water.
In his haze, he felt like he was back in his past life.
Whenever he'd come home drunk from business dinners, Charlotte would always take care of him like this—quietly complaining "you drank way too much again" while gently wiping his face with a warm cloth.
A smile tugged at his lips as he reached out and pulled the person by the bed into his arms, mumbling: "Baby..."
Lily's heart jumped with excitement and she softened her voice: "Preston, let's get some sleep."
That completely different voice hit him like a bucket of ice water.
Preston snapped awake instantly and shoved the woman away: "Get the fuck out!"
