Everything stayed quiet for days until Quinn's assistant arrived: "Ms. Magna, Quinn needs you at headquarters."
Charlotte's stomach dropped.
She took Quinn's car to the Peterson South City office.
Walking into the executive suite, she found Adrian in the big chair, looking strangely calm.
Charlotte stopped dead.
Quinn sat pouring tea nearby. Seeing her, he waved: "Magna, over here."
Charlotte got it together and started toward Quinn.
Adrian's voice cut through the room: "Magna. Here."
Charlotte looked up shocked, meeting his intense stare.
He locked eyes with her: "Magna, you work for me now."
Charlotte froze for a second.
It worked?
Clearly Quinn and Adrian had made some kind of "deal."
Adrian's eyes darkened. "What are you waiting for?"
Quinn jumped in: "Magna, go on."
Charlotte looked at Quinn as tears streamed down her face.
"Mr. Quinn... you're selling me?"
Putting on a show.
Her wet lashes and helpless look would break anyone's heart.
Quinn played along, looking pained: "Magna, I'm so sorry. It's the only way to protect everyone at the company..."
Charlotte fell to her knees in front of Quinn, sobbing: "I don't want to! I only want to stay with you..."
They stared at each other in grief, like star-crossed lovers being torn apart.
The scene made Adrian's chest tighten with anger. "Mr. Quinn!" he snapped.
Finally, Charlotte walked toward Adrian, looking back at Quinn with pure despair.
That night, Adrian announced he was taking her away from South City.
Early the next morning.
Charlotte was escorted onto Adrian's private jet.
Seeing her dazed expression, Adrian softened his voice: "Magna, don't be afraid. I'll protect you now."
Charlotte ignored him, staring out the window pretending to be heartbroken. She didn't touch lunch.
By nightfall, they landed and checked into a hotel.
When Charlotte still wouldn't eat dinner, Adrian lost patience and brought food to her room himself.
She was leaning against the window, her eyes empty.
Adrian set down the food and grabbed her wrist. When she didn't fight, he pulled her close.
"Magna, enough. You need to eat something."
Charlotte's eyes filled, a tear hitting his designer suit.
She remembered how Adrian looked at her with love in her past life, then with cold disgust after she came back.
Men. All the same.
Only wanting what they can't have.
She gave him a bitter smile, voice thick: "I want Quinn."
His arms turned to stone.
After a beat, Adrian tilted her face up: "You really love him that much?"
Charlotte saw the raw pain and jealousy in his eyes.
Still not enough.
She needed him crazy for her, needed to turn him into her weapon.
She spoke with deadly seriousness: "Quinn is my rock, my light. I'd die if it meant keeping him safe."
The arms around her tightened hard.
His strained voice came from above: "What's so special about him? He's practically ancient. What do you see in him?"
"Quinn's only forty. He's not old..." Charlotte defended reflexively.
That set Adrian off: "There are so many better men out there! Why can't you look at someone else?"
"Like who?"
"ME!"
Charlotte looked up shocked, her soft lips accidentally brushing his.
They both froze.
The air instantly charged between them. Breathing each other's air, Adrian's eyes went red as he fought for control.
"Charlotte..." his voice rough, almost hypnotic.
Charlotte's ears went red as she tried to push him away: "Mr. Blackwell, please go..."
Adrian didn't budge, his voice dropping to a warning: "If you don't eat, I'll 'feed' you myself."
Charlotte tensed up and quickly gave in: "I'll eat right now."
Adrian nodded with satisfaction. Before leaving, he added: "As long as you stay with me, Quinn will be fine."
When the door closed, Charlotte's shy act vanished.
He was threatening her: run and he'd destroy Quinn's entire division at South City.
She laughed coldly.
Adrian had no idea Quinn's real backer was James Peterson.
On the way back to the city, Charlotte played along, acting like she'd accepted her fate.
Adrian seemed pleased with her submission.
As the plane approached the familiar skyline, Charlotte felt rare nerves creeping in.
After three years, she was about to face Preston and Jessica again.
