Charlotte collapsed on the ground, gasping for air, forcing herself to calm down.
It's fine.
She'd already died once—what was there to be scared of? She'd rather die than marry him. What could Preston do about it?
But that night, Charlotte got summoned to her father's study.
Her stepmother Linda and half-sister Jessica were there too.
Linda put on her fake gentle act. "Charlotte, you're at the age to get married. Preston seems really devoted to you, and his family background is excellent.
Why don't we settle it? What do you think?"
Hearing this, Charlotte laughed bitterly inside.
Sure, Preston had a great family.
But last time when she'd wanted to marry him, these two had blocked her every step of the way—terrified she'd climb too high.
Now they were actively pushing her to marry him?
No doubt about it. Preston had gotten to them somehow.
Looking up, she caught the jealous hatred in Linda's eyes and her sister Jessica's venomous stare.
A thought flashed through her mind.
She lowered her lashes, putting on her usual good-girl act. "I'll do whatever Dad and Linda think is best."
Her father was pleased by her obedience and nodded for her to leave.
Sure enough, that night when Charlotte passed her stepmother's room, she heard Jessica's shrill, hysterical crying:
"She's just some motherless jinx! How's she good enough for Preston? If anyone should marry him, it's me! I'm Dad's real precious daughter!"
Outside the door, Charlotte dug her nails into her palms.
Don't worry, dear sister. I'd love nothing more than to make that happen.
Back in her room, she got the security footage from last night—she'd been playing Werewolf with friends all evening.
Finally, some relief. She could prove her innocence to Adrian.
But when she opened Adrian's chat and tried to send the video, a red exclamation mark popped up.
Staring at that harsh red mark, Charlotte's hands started shaking.
Adrian had blocked her?!
Without thinking twice, Charlotte threw on her jacket and rushed out, heading straight for Adrian's penthouse in downtown.
But downstairs, the doorman politely stopped her.
"Miss Pierce, sorry. Mr. Blackwell said he's not seeing anyone."
Charlotte's heart sank, her voice breaking.
"Why won't he see me? Did Preston threaten him? Did he—"
The doorman cut her off. "Mr. Blackwell also said from now on, you two are done. No more contact whatsoever!"
Charlotte's vision went black, ears ringing.
But she quickly wiped away her tears.
It's okay. Adrian would be at their mutual friend's birthday party next week.
She'd still have a chance to see him.
A week later, at Nightfall Club.
Charlotte took a deep breath and pushed open the door to the VIP room.
She spotted Adrian right away on the couch, surrounded by people.
He held a drink, his profile sharp and cold, radiating this stay-away vibe.
After sitting down, Charlotte smiled and chatted with friends around her, but kept glancing over at him.
He never looked at her once.
After a few rounds of drinks, someone suggested Truth or Dare and things got lively.
When it was Adrian's turn, he picked Truth.
The guy asking grinned. "Adrian, what kind of person do you hate most?"
The room got quiet.
Adrian tapped his glass, speaking slowly.
"Me? I hate greedy people who string one guy along while chasing another. People who want it all."
"There's a perfect word for that." He stared straight at Charlotte. "Miss Pierce, you know what it is?"
Charlotte went white, her hands ice cold.
The answer was obvious—player. The room went dead silent.
Someone quickly jumped in to change the subject and the game went on.
Adrian said he needed some air and got up to leave.
Charlotte swallowed her pain and hurried after him.
"Adrian, Adrian..."
Down the long hallway, that tall figure kept walking away.
Charlotte's eyes burned. She couldn't stand him thinking the worst of her. She ran after him in her heels, desperate to explain.
But the second she turned the corner, someone grabbed her wrist hard.
