Severin remained rooted to the spot, nodding stiffly.
Soon, the girl opened her phone and played the recording. After a moment of noise, Aurora's familiar and long-lost voice came out of the speaker,
"Severin, when you hear this, I think I should have already left this world. I know you've reincarnated, but I don't know why you're unwilling to tell me. You've even hurt me once and once again, making me wonder if the you who loved me in my previous life was real. But now, it doesn't matter to me anymore. After all, I'm about to die."
Aurora laughed softly, her voice filled with a hint of relief and liberation.
"In my past life, I wronged you first. I was too willful back then, and I didn't love you. I caused you so much pain, so the ending I got was what I deserved. This time, I wanted to make it up to you, to love you properly, but it seems you don't accept my compensation, and that's fine with me. Consider the harm you've inflicted on me as my repayment to you. Severin, we're square. Live your life well from now on—don't linger because of me anymore. If there's an afterlife, let's not meet again. We don't suit each other."
The recording played on for a long time, so long that it felt like a century had passed.
After Fiona left, Severin curled up on the floor, repeatedly playing the short recording.
"Live well. Don't linger because of me anymore..."
"We don't suit each other..."
Not suitable? They had loved each other so deeply, yet they had missed each other time and time again.
Perhaps they really weren't suitable for each other?
At that thought, a searing pain shot through Severin's right knuckles. He looked down to find his nails digging deep into his palm, crimson droplets trailing along the lines of his hand and pooling on the tile floor like a trail of dark roses.
"Aurora, I can't do it..." he murmured to the void.
A year later, Aurora suddenly received a voice message from Severin:
"Aurora, I've spent a year enduring the same punishments I inflicted on you before. I've finally atoned for my sins."
"Aurora, I'm coming to find you."
"Aurora, I love you very much. And I'm sorry. If there's a next life, let's not meet again..."
