She just stood there, totally speechless. Not a single word came out.
In the end, all she could do was continue crying.
That was when I realized… being the villain is kinda fucking great.
Of course, she reported me to the teacher.
When summoned to the office, I tearfully recounted the birthday party incident, then produced a hospital diagnostic certificate.
“Because of her lies, my brother humiliated me in front of everyone. I think about it every damn day, and I can’t even sleep without waking up from nightmares.”
"I'm seeing a therapist now and taking medication. The doctor says I have severe depression."
In the end, the teacher ended up consoling ME instead.
Everyone could tell I despised Phyllis.
Viola was puzzled. “Why are you so obsessed with her? What did she ever do to you?”
I looked up, gave her a smirk.
"Can't I just be a bitch who looks down on the poor new girl because my family is fucking rich?"
"Cut the crap," she rolled her eyes.
"If you were that type, why wouldn't you bully me? My family's way poorer than hers."
"Hell, on our first day of being friends, you bought me three years of high school stationery. Believing you're a bully is like believing I'm Queen Elizabeth."
“Stop being so dramatic, I’m not an idiot.”
Yeah, everyone gets it.
But apparently, my brother and the guy I like don’t.
I curved my lips into a smile, but my eyes remained cold.
A month later was the school’s centennial celebration.
In my past life, under Ulric and Finnian's arrangements, Phyllis performed a piano solo at the ceremony.
Her performance caught the eye of a special admissions officer in attendance, earning her the only special enrollment qualification.
And me?
I'd been studying dance since age four—over a decade of training, and I’d prepared a classical dance piece for the event.
But then Finnian approached me.
He found me at sunset, in the quiet of the school grounds, and pulled me into a hug, whispering.
"Could you skip performing? I don't want everyone seeing how beautiful you are, sweetheart. I'd be jealous."
"Dance just for me alone, okay? Only me."
I was such an idiot back then.
I actually thought it meant something—thinking it showed how much he cared.
So on performance day, I didn't show up.
Instead, I danced for him again and again in the empty dance studio.
The applause from the grand hall echoed far off after I finished. Finnian heard it and suddenly broke into a smile.
He was always so quiet and gentle with me, even his smiles were light, like they were behind a fog.
But that smile was different. For the first time, I saw him react so openly.
I stopped dancing, asked, all starry-eyed. “Are you happy?”
He paused, then answered with a soft, “Yeah.”
Back then, I thought he was happy because I danced just for him.
Much later, I learned the truth.
He was happy because Phyllis Collins’ performance had been a huge success.
The only light in his life now had a brilliant future ahead of her.
